As a middle aged white lady, my mom always showed us, her kids, what racism is and how it hurts people. She would let us see examples and then discuss with us how painful what we saw was. My mom just wanted us to see that we are all just people.
I grew up in Pennsylvania during the 1960's. We actually had separate swimming pools one for whites and one for blacks. I thought that was WEIRD! Our Catholic priest was very active in the Civil Rights Movement. Thank God I sat and listened to him! When the pool was integrated , many people boycotted the white pool! I told Mom we should go the very first day the pool was integrated! She agreed and so we went. It wasn't very crowded but as the summer progressed more and more people came to the pool and that was it! Thank God people EVOLVED!
Don't be afraid to dismantle the BEAST that gives you an unfair advantage in this world. In other words, don't just drink from the ill-gotten fountain of White privilege and look over at Black folks and feel sorry. Stop drinking from a cup that blood and bondage created. Do something hard.
My parents were the same when I grew up in the 60s and 70s and I have no qualms about talking about because anybody who would deny it at this point in time is a racist. And and for the sake of the young people out there I would like to to point out to them that the younger people that era ALSO thought we were going to put an end to it. I'm 62 and my feelings on the issue have never changed.
@@SistarExum As an expat asylum abroad, Snowden tops the list but Mary is my favorite. She’s indisputably for all people, speaking unwaveringly against the patriarchy and a tyrannical, racist, misogynistic narcissist that is her late father’s younger brother. Anyone breaking generational toxic patterns while fighting for the greater good of society and humanity holds a special place in my 💜.
Yes who was our commander and chief PRESIDENT when 45 was running ? Females couldn't even vote until the early ninteen hundreds and who was running at the time ? But someone who has once our first lady who may know what being a commander and chief PRESIDENT is...45 gives people the permission to be sexist bigots...Come on now this is the USA and what does that stand for ?
Mary, please bring back the Nerd Avengers! The times are more critical than ever, with 45 still (allegedly) ahead in the polls. You, Brian, Jen, Dahlia, Norm...we need to hear from you.
Agree. Her show was one of the highlights of my week...miss her insights and those of her fellow Avengers very much!!! Wonder if Ms. Hunter can nudge Ms. Trump to get things rolling again??? Happy New Year, everyone!!
@@frederickrapp5396I miss it as well! I think a combination of things happened: she got sick back in May or June; don’t think it was Covid, but not sure what she had. Then, she started a live tour of her show, but only had two shows (I think), then canceled the rest because of getting sick and also, I imagine the her crazy Uncle’s cult were a safety concern as well. Also, she and E. Jean Caroll are writing romance spy fiction (I’m not sure I got the correct genre). So, a lot of things going on, besides she’s probably needing a rest/escape from the horrifying crap Donald and her adult-age cousins and all the rest of the goons do. It disgusts and horrifies us, but imagine having those narcissistic sociopaths as family. Mary is a bright light in a dark world, and I hope she makes time for self-care. 💜
@bettyveronica9880 Yes, those are all good points and that's giving her the benefit of a doubt. I hope it wasn't tensions between the members of the group. But we wouldn't have to speculate if she would release a statement. She doesn't owe us a detailed statement. Just give an indication that it's not over and that there are future podcasts ahead. That would eliminate the doubt and questions.
Prof. Hunter, great interview as usual. Your guest and Psychologist Mary Trump always shares her experiences within her family and is unfiltered about white supremacy in our Nation. Thank you both.
Great show today. First time viewer but absolutely Love 💕 Mary Trump. Exactly the opposite feeling I have for her Uncle. America's biggest Threat. VOTE 💙 BLUE 💙💙💙. THANKS
Professor Hunter, I appreciate this conversation. Part of the issue is a lack of acknowledgment of the humanity of those who are "othered" (race, disability, class, etc.).
Thanks for having Mary on the show. Such a unique perspective, not only of her uncle, but of the whole system and culture. Somewhat happily distracted by Captain, the cat in the background, up to some antics.
Having spent the majority of my scholastic career in Utah, I can say with GREAT confidence that we NEVER learned of the Black Wall Street Massacre in Tulsa, or even studied the Civil War AT ALL.
People who have, really don't want to know what what is going on. If you have clean water to drink. Why do you care if your neighbors don't have clean water to drink. That's the problem with America. 75 percent of Americans don't see what poor people are dealing with so they don't care.
Atonement. Today that word struck me, as never before, with a profound ring of truth. Thank you once more and wishing you a HAPPIER New Year Professor Karen Hunter and PHD-Ms. Mary T..
I remember listening to your radio show during the COVID and Georgia Floyd era. You stated that “this was our time but we wouldn’t have it much longer”. Unfortunately, boy were you right, things went downhill Quickly❤.
Thank you for this episode! About the 17-minute mark, you ask, How can one person convince others that "this group" or "these people" are the problem? Look into tactics of coercive control, thought reform, and mind control for your answer. The same underlying dynamics are at play in DV/IPV, gangs, extremist groups, trafficking, cults, etc.
I'm really, really, REALLY concerned about him winning again. I think that complacency and apathy will go a long way in securing that second term. I don't believe that a plurality of Americans are keen on exactly HOW bad it will be if he does win, or HOW CRAZY he is, and what that will mean for ALL of our futures; I do not know how to inform them. A part of me wants to see the decline of America and think we deserve that destruction because a lot of us, took it so for granted, but obviously my informed mind says HELL NO. Come ON defense, let's go, let's wrap this shit up!
Me too. I’m Canadian, and I sometimes think I lose more sleep than the average American, about the Sword of Damocles hanging over American democracy. Thanks to MAGA and the Republicans, the U.S. is already on the path to Nazi Germany meets The Handmaid’s Tale - if Trump wins in 2024 it will be the death of the American Experiment. Failure is NOT an option. All SANE Americans MUST play their part and VOTE BLUE 🗳️🌊🌊🌊. Best wishes from your upstairs neighbours 🇨🇦🤞
Does Donald not know, that if HE gets absolute immunity - every next president will get it too?? Or does he think, because he is so unique and extravagant, this should only be granted to him allone??
Professor Hunter the word atonement is true people don’t feel they need to atone for anything at some point you are continuing with a problem that you knew and accepted 🤔. Stop help make things better 😟. Professor Hunter keep telling the truth.
When I was a child, my parents were prejudice towards race, religion, and culture. I never understood this since I had friends who were Mexican, Jewish, Asian and from other cultures. Since I was the eldest of 9 children, through the years, most of us brought home a rainbow of individuals. One by one my parents learned to accept and then love all the wonderful variety of humans we kids either married or had a friendship with. Prejudice, I believe is founded on ignorance and fear of the other. Change is possible when there is a willingness to understand and accept each other's differences. I'm wishing everyone a peace-filled, loving, and compassionate new year.
I had questioned if this was a good way to start the day, and now I regret questioning myself because this was a wonderful way to start the day. Be blessed be safe stay true.
Neurologically, economically, and even ecologically racism has been an massive Intergenerational influence on the viability of African American life in America. During the last century, we historically watched the agricultural transition for the Black farmer go from an endangered species to extinction with legislative economic annihilation. In the latter part of the last decade, a projection was made that the median net worth for African American families will be zero by 2053. Based on post pandemic trends the middle class African American family is endangered in health when it comes to morbidity rates and in wealth in terms of median net worth. If there are no interventions and any meaningful forms of reparations the middle class Black family will be extinct tragically before 2053 which makes racism both lethal and toxic forces in America!
I stumbled across this interview. Glad I did looking to see what mary trump was up to. Karen love your perspective and your beautiful mind that has a soul. Looking forward to listening to what you bring to the table for me to hear . Then be able to use my common sense to walk forth in my world of wisdom. With the knowledge that you share. Blessings We are more the same than different.
One Workshop suggestion: Have everyone write pen to paper the first words they come to mind when hearing the word racism. That the top five to map out the following 1. Where does this reality come from? 2. How did this exercise make you feel emotionally? 3. What - When was your FIRST experience of differences between you (your race) and others’ race?
This was a great exchange. Anytime I see white people who can honestly engage in discussions regarding race/racism, it gives me hope because white people are the ones that need to dismantle white supremacy culture and white people receive this kind of information better when it's coming from another white person. It also helps to avoid deflection with accusations of "pulling the race card" or "making everything about race".
Ladies, thank you & more, please!!! I have wondered why educators can’t, are not allowed to teach that race is a construct!!! It infuriates me no end. I am 76, my ancestors were from British Isles & Denmark; I have two degrees in education but subbed only.
Such a terrific stimulating honest conversation that really gets to the nub of the problem. We never hear this level of intelligent debate on mainstream broadcast television these days. Almost all TV interactions on discussion/political shows is deliberately performative and combative. It is a cynical formula to garner clicks and create memes and it happens in nicely parcelled shallow 5/10 minute segments. It has resulted in the clown show politics of US and UK politics. Shows like this on You Tube are vital to injecting sanity and intellect in the public discourse going forward.
Ms. Hunter, I rarely make comments. My first encounter with you was a discussion featuring Kat Williams, who I did not know. Your interview with Orlando was so spot on regarding whiteness. This interview with Mary Trump was also very enlightening. I'm a fan and can't believe I'm writing this. Thank you for having such engaging podcasts.
you're welcome...this isn't a podcast. These are clips from a live 3-hour, M-F radio show on @SiriusXM. If you have SiriusXM, I suggest you check out the actual show...it's a vibe.
Global observer here and think that more Aftican-Americans, immigrants who have sought security and asylum in the US and have become participants in not only shaping America but in its political path, should tune in to this podcast; particularly (we believe), African-Americans who allow themselves as stage decorations in Donald Trump's "rallies" with "Blacks for Trump" banners held up because there is nothing in it for them under Trump-2nd term or forever.
Interesting… the idea IF one identifies as white and applying it to something other than skin color or the “blood” one possesses. I know people see me as white. I know I was raised in a mostly white environment (meaning, seriously influenced by the systems in place). While I’m 100% British isles and my skin is quite “white,” when I was younger and people felt freer to be openly racist (like now I guess?), various white people would say something obviously racist to me as if the whiteness of my skin meant I was in league with them, part of a larger conspiracy. (Like the old SNL skit but instead of getting free bus rides, the privilege conferred was deeply racist people getting a free ride to spread and uphold white superiority.) It was quite disorienting for me every time it happened. I used to want to say, but was afraid that I would be usurping space that was not mine to stand in (even though I felt like it ought to be), “You must think I’m white.” (Whiteness in the larger sense.) It’s only later in life I realised I could take that stance out of the space of being human. That I wouldn’t be taking anything away from anyone by doing that.
I want to say that like some people, my earliest years were spent having a black people as next door neighbors (a shared duplex). My brother and I were best friends with their kids. That is, before we went to school, before we really got to see TV, we had this experience while racist language was completely barred in our home. By the time we went to school, my mother was actively anti-racist (not relying on our early experience alone), helping us to navigate what we’d experience in the world. So, when I encountered black anger that might have nothing to do with me, I knew not to story book it into developing racism on my part. I’m talking about negative situations that didn’t happen because of my actions but having everything to do with the terrible system we were all thrust in. For example, I was one of the white kids who integrated a black school while the white system disadvantaged the black students in their home territory-really devastating, racist BS that was seen as normal, right. Kids and the few black teachers who remained were understandably angry and some acted out. Heck, I’ve been angry about racism much of my life. I fully relate to Mary seeing, from a young age, prejudice/turning people into “other” as totally ridiculous and incredibly harmful to all of society. All of this made me deeply interested in racism and ensuring I did what I could in my life not to participate and also be actively anti-racist like my mother. (She was not from the US and never met a black person before moving to the US and was appalled by what she encountered.)
sure you can...we had 200 years of racist presidents...that's not the issue. We shouldn't have presidents that don't respect the Constitution. Or who inspire Insurrections.
Harvard: The Great American Conspiracy. Look to the origin story and the trajectory of Harvard...the premier (as in first) educational institution in this cultural milieu...and find where we can intervene.
The elephant in the room is that modern USA is a nation of immigrants (willing or not), and I hope that more channels/people would include American Indigenous voices and perspectives, especially after DT's recent and continuing "blood" comments. Otherwise, I really enjoyed listening and considering the perspectives in this conversation.
The children of today are raised a little differently. At least by some parents. I have a 20 year old and a 15 year old. They have the same way about them. They see people who come into their lives, more on a character kind of way. More like the things they have in common. Nothing else really comes into the equation.
I can say: the next generation, at least from my house, are completely different. My kids have friends from every direction. White, black,Asian, Hispanic, Mexican. Bi- sexual, trans. etc.None of that is a thing.
When I learned about the civil war and slavery, or the holocaust in school I didn't ever feel ashamed to be white. The first time I felt ashamed to be white was when I saw a video of a Trump rally. BTW I'm Canadian, and even in Canada, we learn that slavery was only one of the issues in the civil war, and they mention this states' rights hogwash--I was disgusted when I first read that the Confederacy's declaration of war against the Union explicitly said it was about slavery and the need ot preserve white supremacy, in the F-ing words! I didn't realize that textbooks in schools in Canada were also written by the Daughters of the Confederacy.
Somehow?? Ik how...wp decided to remove it from "history" books because it was inconvenient for them....iowa is prime real estate for where that happened. Sickening to think about the wp who did the removing of said books. Smh
I have said this on many occasions...the vast majority of white Americans are very comfortable in their white only world and see no need and no benefit in having this type of conversation. So, how do u make THAT lifestyle uncomfortable enough to have them engaged in a meaningful conversation. I am aware this is NOT breaking news...just a thought....
I was searching for Mary - because she wasn't on her RU-vid & came across this show/interview 🤗 1st - How great thy AREN'T was funny cuz its True! & 2nd - I constantly say STOP using the socially made up constructs & use the REAL words, when you call a BIGOT a BIGOT they seemingly find it harder to obfuscate - then when you say RACIST! I wonder if either of you read Loius (Skip) Gates book "Many Rivers to Cross..." - the history of Africans in America from beginning to circa 2013, it is a compilation of our history that IMHO should be taught in schools! I wasn't aware until then that there were duly elected men of color after the Civil War - until our freedom was 'Reconstructed' into secod class status & we were enslaved again - in a different hue. I'm happy to have found the Karen Hunter Show & your interview with Mary Trump, thank you ladies & happy new year!!
“The Color of Law” by Richard Rothstein was an eye-opening book for me about red lining and other policies and laws that segregated populations and fueled our racial divisions to this day. A great read.
Love that you hit this early on: "Race" is a concept that emerged in the 18th century to justify slavery in judicial systems. We are all brothers and sisters of the human race and I hope that we can recognize each other's cultural differences and have some curiosity and compassion for people who don't look like us without conflating skin tone or language with being "other" people to be feared or reviled.
