Composed by David Wise. Recreated by me. This was made possible by locating the original instrument samples from workstation keyboards and drum machines before they were put into the game and rebuilding the soundtrack from the ground up, applying some modern mixing techniques along the way to lift the veil of 16bit compression and create an updated listening experience. @ 2:35, that part is rarely heard. It’s either because you go into a bonus level or lose a life (which restarts the music), or end the level before it gets there lol

I've been fascinated with caves since I was just a kid. The March, 1991 issue of National Geographic fed that blaze well with its phenomenal coverage of Lechuguilla. When Donkey Kong Country came out in '94 I was absolutely in awe of the cave stages. They were the most accurate translation of watery, natural limestone underground I'd seen (and heard!) in a video game. Thanks again for these Sam.

I'm with ya man. I went caving w/ the Boy Scouts when I was about 10-12, and I got hooked. I still enjoy getting underground when I can. Never seen any giant bumblebees though

The backgrounds evoked a sense of wonder for me. I would try to imagine what else was back there. The ice caves and bayou especially.

This is just a great song with some very surreal parts, but most people sadly never hear them. The early levels are too short for it to play though all the way, and the later levels are so dangerous, that the music will inevitably restart upon constant deaths.

I never knew the more melodic, flying series of notes near the end existed until listening to the full version on this site. I never heard them in-game It’s odd, since there are more cave levels than any other kind in the game.

Nah breh, the most common level is the mineshaft levels. If you play elevator antics you'll get to hear the notes at the end even if you play really fast.

The cave level ost is pretty long. In actual gameplay though, I never hear the full music so whenever I'm near the exit I pause the game to listen when I was little.

The nostalgia is so real with DKC songs including this one. This song in particular never hit me that hard as other DKC-DKC3 songs like Mill Fever, Stickerbrush Symphony, Forest Interlude, Ice Cave Chant, Cascade Capers, or Aquatic Ambience.

The original Cave Dweller Concert Restored is the song I link people to so that they can experience the joy of these restorations. So glad to hear an even more perfected version. Only complaint is how loud the water drips are: did Rare really intend for them to be that loud?

@JamminSamMiller the part at 2:35 still doesn't sound accurate :/ The melody that echos does it way faster than in the original. Also, they sound quite low in volume when it is not supposed to :c

I really wish the original in-game SNES music of this theme hadn't been soooo compressed back then. The sound effects I'm hearing here are crazy, some of which I'm hearing for the first time! So much more atmosphere with this one! Nicely done Sam!

Incredible use of effects here! In the previous version the work seemed to be pretty raw, you really added a studio feeling now with the sound mixing of this version, Sam. Amazing!

Instant sub, your approach to SPC700 restorations using original source samples is something that aligns with my personal values. If you can source samples from any SNES or SPC soundtrack, consider remaking the Mega Man X series and evaluate adjust the guitar samples to be less problematic (especially in X3), they really suffered as a result. Tales of Phantasia is another suggestion.

Y'know, it's just now hit me that this is my childhood. I always thought "Oh, Donkey Kong Country Returns is my childhood, I never played Donkey Kong Country!" but... really, listening to this track restored? I can literally HEAR the inspiration for Donkey Kong Country Returns... that is so unfathomably weird, that THESE tracks ARE my childhood!

So out of curiosity. I'm a real fan of all the restoration you've done, but the finished version of this you have on your google drive which is the same one thats in the incredible MSU1 patch for this, the lead instrument sounds off from this version. I'm just a little confused why you changed that after this version seemed to perfect the sound already and now it sounds almost too high pitched? Other than that its absolutely phenomenal to play the game with an MSU-1 patch I was just a little confused by that decision.
