I honestly have re-watched this part numerous time just to see the devastation on Brian Kuh's face. I love how the entire time he just wishes Steve bad luck haha.
Kuh actually came forward and explained that there was movie bias towards making Michell look like an enemy [not hard though considering hes a massive cheater] but i dont think kuh is all that bad
Brian goes around the neighborhood to let everyone know there's a Donkey Dong kill screen coming up so they can all pack into the room and watch him nut 🥴🤤🤓
It's hilarious they put that quote in after Kuh was desperately trying to drum up spectators (" possible kill screen coming up if anyone wants to see it") and thereby put more pressure on Wiebe to fail. A very cunning ape indeed...
i love how he gets more and more nervous as wiebe's run goes on too LOL. mid interview he's like "ah it sounds like he just cleared another level... * internally: damn it to hell! *
Most people really don't want to seen as a nerd in real life. Don't buy into that modern bullshit story that nerds rule now. An actual nerd is someone most people don't identify with and not some bullshit faux-nerd with a Marvel t-shirt and fake Buddy Holly glasses on. Stop believing the bullshit.
It’s amazing how a newcomer to the arcade scene just showed up one day and started beating champions who did this for years. Wiebe is the real King of Kong.
They say on a quiet night in the woods behind Fun Spot, if you're really quiet and clear your head of all negative energy, you can still hear Kuh saying "there's a potential kill screen coming up in a couple minutes of you're interested."
the funny thing is all those people around him, actually motivated him!! steve states that in the film and the editors put that scene of brian talking about pressure together, pure genius
@@HerecomestheCalavera In those two years I learned the real address. Unfortunately you're slightly off, it's 308 Negra Arroyo Lane Albuquerque, New Mexico
I want to remind everyone of the set up to this scene and the aftermath. These fucking elitist ass nerds refused to accept Steve Wiebes score that he sent in via videotape regardless of the fact that that's basically how all their high scores are done. They forced him to have to fly out to their fucking arcade and do it in person. Then after he did it Billy Mitchell submitted a score to beat his that Billy put on a VHS tape and they accepted it despite insisting that Steve Wiebe couldn't submit a VHS and had to do it in person. Then years after this documentary it came out that Billy had been faking his VHS scores.
Sorry I'm late but yeah they even sent someone all the way to his house to discredit his setup as well! It was like the most obviously rigged competition in the history of gaming and Steve rose to the occasion like a true legend. That part and the (mame'd in hindsight) tape showed billy's true colors as well by the way; I'm just glad he never stooped so low as to hire someone to beat him up but wouldn't have put it beneath him either.. "I want his hands broken in a way he'll never reach another killscreen again!"
Billy Mitchell's high scores are under dispute. Steve Weibe is the true first Donkey Kong 1 Mil High score. Billy Mitchell submitted the infamous tape that is in fact MAME recording, not arcade hardware.
@@LyfaLeeZhure_DavidShawn You have to run the left and then follow a spring to the right, back to the ladder. But you need to watch where the springs are landing and be prepared to run back and try again.
@@trimbandit9636take off on a long spring. Have to watch the following spring that comes out (as you're moving right). If it is another long spring, you have to retreat. If it is a short spring, you continue running up the ladder. Difficult to master.
Everyone likes to rag on Brian Kuhn but to his credit he is a pretty straightforward guy here. Sure he goes around trying to drum up a crowd to stress Wiebe but he's indirectly honest about that afterwards. Also, he states upfront that his game is "weak" and about half what Wiebe's score was. When Wiebe finally gets success, he's upfront again about the first kill screen, highest score at Cool Spot - he didn't try to weasel his way out of the fact even though we can all see it was crushing to his spirit. Just he sucked up to Billy too much, and got too obsessed over a game. I don't doubt the film director tried to show him in a poor light. BTW, interesting that Robert calls Billy Mitchell "Bill".
Apparently Kuh was a victim of deceptive editing by the film makers. But that look of devastation is what it is. He said he wanted to be the first to get to the kill screen and he found it hard to announce that Weibe was the first to do it. The seething jealousy/resentment is written all over his face.
I've watched a somewhat recent Interview and Billy was behind him the whole time making sure he wasn't saying anything out of line. So idk to me after watching that interview I don't think the film did him dirty, he's really a grown man doing someone else biding.
My dad said that one day at the arcade, he put a single quarter into Robotron. 2 and a half hours later (still on the same quarter) the game shut down and rebooted.
@@irondice5183 It seems pretty plausible to me. Granted I don't know the game, so I'm not sure if you can actually go that long with a single quarter, but chances are it did indeed shut down and whatnot. It's not unknown that malfunctions happen.
I sort of feel for the nerd guy. it must be devastating when there was only one thing you were good at in life and someone comes along and makes you look beta yet again.
How satisfying is it that Steve Wiebe currently holds a Donkey Kong record (11th highest score) with a higher score than Billy Mitchell (per Twin Galaxies website), Billy Mitchell is no where near the top score (he's 12th), and Billy's crony fluffer Brian Kuh isnt even in the top 20(he's 35th)?!
Having watched that documentary 11 years ago I’d say that Steve’s triumph over Billy and Billy’s recent fall from grace is more than satisfying, is cathartic.
I love that for all Billy did to cheat his cheating video didn't even keep him from going down to 12th before being exposed. Seriously, I don't use the word often but those Twin Galaxies guys hanging onto their glory days of winning a video game high schore decades ago to the point they would cheat to keep it, or make up insane high scores for dozens of games just to try and grasp that "glory" are honestly pathetic. I would get it if they were rich with girls falling all over them and mainstream success or something, but you live a lie for that tiny bit of glory. I'm sorry but it's just pathetic.
steve is such a likable down to earth guy. but i guess anyone would be likable compared to kuh and mitchell. even that weird/ridiculous captain awesome guy from the king of kong movie is more likable than those nerdlingers.
The deleted scene was when the guy ran into the brothel next door, and shouted "There's a potential Donkey Kong Kill screen coming up next door!!!" Then everyone ran out of the brothel half naked into the arcade.
The old gamers in these decade-old documentary movies are both fascinating and sad at the same time. So much effort and hours spent on something that really doesn't matter at all. Only a very small niche of people would give a shit about having a top score in any game.
Not to be mean, but I dare say the vast majority of things you care about and put effort into don't matter at all either. Outside of your circle of very close friends and family, which may amount to maybe 20 or 30 people at most, nobody knows or cares about anything you do, and yet you still find joy in doing those things. Again, I'm not saying this to be mean, after all the same is true for me and for everyone else reading this, I'm just reminding you that nothing at all matters in the grand scheme of things, and that's okay.
My friend had the donkey Kong arcade machine at his house. When we were kids we played it for hours and then we wouldn’t know what the hell happened when it would just stop.
I think I got a defective ROM for DK in MAME4All on Dreamcast or the emulator glitched or has a bug in it, I was only at L4 and on the Ramps Board the time was at 800 when I got the the level one below where Donkey Kong Stands and was not even able to get to the hammer before I died because I tried to rush to complete the board and dies by running into a barrel. I did not use the hammer at the bottom and tried to get to the top as quick as possible.
I haven't seen this movie yet, but when I was 12 in 1982 I reached level 25 screen 3 times and it only gave me 60 seconds I think it was, it might of been 25 to clear the screen. What ever it was it was impossible to clear. Used all my Mario's on that screen.
What you guys don't understand, some people preform better under pressure. Steve can do it, i think the extra eyes put him over the top. So Brian Kunt got played.
Not as hard as doing a decathlon (10 events) or a triathlon (3 events). I guess he is right but that is a really weird way to say it. It is like saying "It isn't as hard as lifting 1,000 pounds or 300 pounds but it is still very very hard."
