Note: I'm not really doing review videos anymore but I thought the original deserved a follow-up.
This is a follow up to the original review video that I did over a year ago about the Donner DP-1 Power supply. This video addresses some of the comments and questions from the original video.
The unit costs about 40$ and I see it as a very decent alternative to the name brands which cost hundreds of dollars more. Thank you for watching, take care.

Thanks for the review. Ordering the Donner DP-1 power supply and inexpensive small pedal board I'm putting together. Only using 2 pedals (looper & vocal harmonizer) so this should work for me. You are correct about the noise thing. Can be anything. I know some pros who use this power supply and they are not having noise issues at all with the Donner. Thanks again. I know how much work goes into making these video's. 🎸🎸🎸

i have one and it's a no brainer for the buck. i use it in my medium board for rehearsals. i put 10 pedals and everything works great. that's my 2 cents.

I've been considering trying one of these and while I've read a handful of horror stories this gives me confidence to try this one out which seriously cuts down on my costs.

Hey, it powers the pedals and it doesn’t cost a lot. 1 year in and no issues. I think donner has decent customer support too. Enjoy and take care!!

I’ve had mine well over 6 months with no problems. Wish the power cord was longer, so I made a longer one. No noise, no issues. It’s worth the $40 on Amazon.

Of this power supply, of which I have owned several, I will say this.... Noise and reliability, in my experience, will always rely on the kinds, and number of pedals, you have on your rig. With smaller rigs, such as yours, there shouldn't be too many problem; if any. Especially if you're running micro pedals. However, once your pedals move up in size and quality, that story changes significantly. If you use up all of the slots, you might get away with no issues, but again, once your pedals become complex, if you tube pedals, full sized pedals, this power supply will start getting challenged. I have a D'Addario XPN2 Pedalboard and it's totally expanded and totally loaded. This power supply began to work overtime and began having issues early on, so, I added another Donner power supply and split the power between the two. This fixed it for a while, but I found that fuzz pedals just stopped fuzzing! My eventual solution was to add three power supplies to the rig and splitting power between all three. Each power supply is working at low capacity and each pedal works fine. This however, is a costly solution and not for everyone. Still, my rig has no longer has issues and every pedal works as it should....No noise, no nothing! Keep in mind that this has been my experience and I still think this power supply is okay, especially with a smaller rig. And, I am aware that I had these issues because I'm just one of those guys who just needs to take every pedal he owns to a gig (I am working on that)! Great video, thumbs up!
@colinlamb
@colinlamb 2 года назад
Thank you! I think it is important to note that I'm not running a monster rig (and by the way good luck trying to get anything off the board sir- I FEEL THE PAIN). I think if someone has money to throw at the higher end pedals they probably aren't worried about the supply costing 200. I think the main point of the video is that this unit will work for a lot of people and save some money to put towards (MORE GAIN PEDALY OBVIOUSLY) other thing lol. Thank you for your comment and thoughts. Take very good care and happy GAINING- I mean playing!

I was getting noise from this power supply. I had it plugged into a surge protector that was powering a fluorescent light also. I found that the light was causing the noise so I plugged it directly to the wall but was still getting noise. The outlet was right next to my amp. I plugged it into the wall further away from the amp and now it is fine.

I just ordered one of these. Here is my thoughts on the "noise" issues that people complain about. If you want noiseless then go spend thousands of dollars on custom gear and while you are at it hire yourself a full time guitar tech. For me this is in my budget and it probably won't make no worst noise than what i do with my guitar. Hell it might be a good fill in effect.

yeah, I'm going to get this power supply. The only problem is it's way more expensive to get in Australia. Local guitar store sells this power supply for $200au I found it on ebay for $125au delivered from a Japanese seller. To get the good power supplies they're like $400au Thanks for the original review and follow up👍

Thanks, I just ordered a DP-2 that was on sale for $38, I only have 6 pedals and none of them are high current draw. I figure for that price its worth a shot over the more expensive bricks, but if nothing else I'm only out $38 and I can try something else later if necessary.

Hi Colin there are alot of internet trolls with negative comments to throw out there, for what reason I am unsure? Most people dont understand what isolated power supply means or what they actually do. Just because it is isolated doesnt mean your rig will be completley noiseless. Whatever noises you had before you bought your power supply will still be there after you install it. People get an isolated power supply and assume it will fix all pre existing unwanted noise, but it doesnt work and they automatically assume it's just another a shitty power supply lol. Or maybe they do know what isolated is, but have no idea where the noise comes from. As you pointed out. I just thought I would put an end to the madness. As there are many people who clearly are confused. Is it isolated? Yes it is No it's not Lol ok I own a DONNER DP3 power supply. it is every bit isolated as good as my voodoo lab PS. Which fried after 3 years BTW and my DONNER still working strong after 4 years. If ANYONE wants to leave negative comments and say that the donner ps is not isolated, they clearly did not test the circuit with a MULTIMETER for continuity between each separate ISOLATED power cable to the next one beside it and so forth. A Multimeter doesnt lie folks. Shove your comments where the sun dont shine and test your donner I have no doubt if you test it with a meter you will infact find that each power lead is isolated from the next. If it is advertised as isolated it is isolated. Now I did not ever own a DP1 or DP2 but my DP3 is built like a tank and still running. Far longer than my voodoo lab which cost 2 times as much I might add. Noise equals 1 crappy cables/patch cords 2 low grade guitar electronics 3 single coil pickups 4 dirty connections 5 your Amp or pedals 6 routing of cables 7 other cables near and around your board 8 the wall power itself and environment All of which Colin has stated in this video. I have a few noisy pedals and I know it's the pedal some are just noisy but it's only when they are on. Turn them off or roll off the volume folks. Thanks for the video colin No leafs No Maybe next year

👏 thank you. I think in some cases people are just defending their 200$ purchase. Also, many big artists used daisy chains at first and low and behold they still made it. Should I go with the DP-1, DP-2, or DP-3? I want to go isolated because it’s gonna keep my pedals quiet and I want to start a board. Where should I start?

I had a behringer powered board and another cheap daisy chain for my loop. Had an awful hum. I got the dp1 and it got 10x better, still a tiny bit of hum which isolated to my Mesa 5 band eq. I’m going to try a battery in that to see if it is indeed the power supply or not. I just ordered a furman power conditioner because I am getting hum without any pedals too. Curious to see how that helps the entire situation

Sometimes plugs and extension cords and power bars can be to blame if you haven’t checked those yet. I like to test plugs by just plugging the amp in first and playing without pedals. My jam room has so many plugs and power bars I’ve just accepted a tiny bit of him. Thevonly situation I would really care about would be recording. However, I’ve done 2 sessions with the dp and no issues. Thanks for stopping by. Take care

With the countless forum posts, and amazon reviews ive read, ive learned that if my power supply is unisolated, im basically a waste of space amateur pedal collector. Ive had a Caline power supply on my board for years, which isnt a truly isolated source. Ive had no issues, other than the dread ive felt from using said device. Should i consider an upgrade to donner? Can you hook me up with a featured artist discount?

Plug in that power supply and listen to the noise. You will find the answer in that tone distorting voice.

Had issues with the Donner after a year, it simply could no longer power my setup (7 pedals) . Signal starting cutting and I had to unplug it and plug it back to get a signal Wich would later die after a couple of minutes. Had this happen live out of all the places. Decided to invest in a 1 spot cs6 instead.

Whats the benefit of having a 3 prong extension cable in your pedalboard.
@colinlamb
@colinlamb 5 месяцев назад
A three prong plug has a ground, which isn’t necessary if everything plugged into it is 2 prong. I use the extension for the length. Also, the donner plug is thin and the cord gets stepped on all the time in jam rooms or onstage, etc. those thin cables aren’t robust enough. Also, a three prong plug usually doesn’t pop out as easy, especially if it’s a low profile plug.
@jonny1251
@jonny1251 5 месяцев назад
@@colinlamb Cool. Yeah, i was looking for a different plug exactly for that reason but I think ill copy your power bar idea. The plugs in these dp1's are really flimsy.

I've had two of these crap out, using 4 of the 100mA and one 500mA outputs. yes it's a bit noisy too. This works but if UR playing a gig U need Reliability and I'm not seeing it with this pedal. I'm shopping for a better PS. The price is good if U dont need it to be reliable or quite.

I stand by everything I have said in my video. I have now gigged with this thing 20+ times. I use it every week at rehearsal for 3+hours. My friend has the stryman unit and a voodoo labs. he has no less noise than I do. There is noise with high gain pedals but this is always the case. most people will use noise gates. I also did some extensive studio recording with this. And FYI, the engineer uses cheap daisy chains. Just my experience. sorry you aren't having luck.
@PraiseDog
@PraiseDog 2 года назад
I have been using four power supplies. Three of my dozen+ pedals need strict Isolation, they have independent power supplies, the others all share a daisy chain. I don't have noise with that setup. There have been demonstrations with meters that show the channels on this inexpensive Donner are not isolated, the unit lacks transformers. Others demo a pedal that absolutely require an independent power source, and noise is very evident using this Donner. I honestly believe you don't have any pedals that require an independent supply, I can see from experience that most of them are of that type.
@colinlamb
@colinlamb 2 года назад
I am always of the mind that if it works it works. Some people go way to far with elitism and expensive gear. It 100% works fine for me. I have played shows and used it in the studio as recently as December 2021. Also, while I was in the studio the producer was running a different pedal rig for me and just using a daisy chain, even though he, himself uses a very expensive supply on his pedal board. You are right about certain rigs needing their own supply although that is usually related to a unique voltage. (my Line 6 DL4 for example). Thank you for the input and take good care.
