This is a short video demonstrating the 3M half face respirator that you may use for the duration of this pandemic.
Note that the video has not been reviewed or endorsed by 3M or any state health jurisdiction and has been made as a PSA to ensure that people use these respirators safely.
Happy to entertain questions in the comments.

@staffsnake: When performing the negative pressure fit check on 6035 filters, while pressing on the filters, you need to inhale slowly and then hold your breath for at least 5 seconds to see if any air leaks from the side of the mask / other areas. You will notice the mask collapse slightly in on itself if the fit is proper and while holding your breath it should not "uncollapse" without letting go of the filters or breathing again. If you do not maintain the holding of breath for that amount if time and perform it as fast as you did in the video you might miss small leakages that can present a huge infection vector especially when working with COVID-19 patients or contaminated area and having to deal with a nasty bugger such as SARS-CoV-2.

Thanks again. Good stuff. One critical point which so many HHS seem to forget: by staff using these, they spare the disposable respirators for those that need them for other reasons. And honestly, the superior fit of these reusable respirators and the reduced airway resistance makes them preferable IMHO. Regards, Anaesthetist in Qld.

Yes these respirators have so many advantages. They are more comfortable especially for long periods IMO, superior fit, superior filtration if you have the P100 filters, and they last a long time if taken care of. Just overall a far better long term solution than disposable respirators.

Orhan Semerci I am given to understand that the full face as purchased is not compatible with glasses frames. So you would need to either wear contacts or find a solution for some kind of sports strap instead of frames. The half face with a 6035/6038/7093 meets P2/N95 with a half face respirator and meets P3/N99 with a full face respirator, according to the 3M distributor I spoke to.

Hi, thanks for the video. I'm a respiratory therapist. Do you think we need to wear a surgical mask over the 3M respirator at all times with the COVID patients?
@staffnsnake
@staffnsnake 3 года назад
I guess that depends on what you are doing. If you don’t have the virus but you are certain (through testing) that the patient does, then for your own protection the surgical mask is not warranted in addition to the respirator. But if there is any uncertainty that the patient might not have covid, then the risk runs both ways: you could have caught it and be asymptomatic but still spreading. In that case, the exhalation port needs to be covered. I want to make an important point. These 3M systems were adopted as an emergency measure in the absence of (or insufficient quantities of) correctly fitting N95/P2 particulate respirators or PAPR systems. It was never the intention of 3M, nor is it my intention or expectation, that these form a permanent part of medical management, given the potential risk of spreading the virus from HCW to hitherto uninflected patients.

Hi, we are trying to procure these half masks for donation to the Philippines. We would be getting the 7093 filters (US version) + 6200 masks and are planning to convert it into a single-cartridge set up using a 3D printed bayonet-type cover to close one of the cartridge ports in an attempt to cut filter consumption in half. @@staffnsnake Same deal with me. I work in the paint industry and already have a lot of supplies from my work. I had all the N95 masks, half face respirators, full face for working with fumes, dust, and hazmat, the original purpose of these masks. Wore them all day for nearly 7 years now. Now they're just double purpose, and if they work well for being close to patients, then they work for protecting in crowded places. I realize healthcare workers are at risk, but those who already had them should not be shamed for using them to protect themselves. A life is a life, and these could be a life saver even for average people out in the community who have them. Cloth masks are a 'collective effort' and we are seeing a lot of stubborn people not following that. I have to deal constantly with people who do not social distance, wear masks, or take any kind of precautions. So protecting myself is just the right thing to do, one less patient for you to deal with!

So long as you have the particulate filter attached, that will filter virus. You must be sure not to touch the outer surface of the filter. Unfortunately there is a large hole on in the particulate filter holder that allows just that. So you need to be very careful. Some people have made 3D printed covers for the hole. You would need to search for them yourself online. You would be better to find and order a specific particulate filter like the two that I mentioned.

Yes the filter does filtrate virus particles. From what I understand from 3M’s literature, the virus particles remain trapped on the outside of the filter, yet under the plastic case. The virus would not remain viable for long. But as long as the filter within the cartridge is dry, there is no reason to suppose it would somehow let them through. Also, viruses are not bacterial biofilm and don’t work their way out to the outside.

Doc, Not sure if you contacted 3M Australia or not. But here is some response from 3M: //3M is in discussions right now with TGA re their requirements for respirators. Safety gear is excluded goods for TGA approval in many healthcare applications, but not all, and it is not clear to us right now if products such as the one you have attached are “freely” usable in the covid-19 situation or not. So I cannot give you any official response re TGAs position. Hopefully we will have clarification sooner rather than later.//he, I will let you know when I get some update from them.
@staffnsnake
@staffnsnake 4 года назад
Nobody sought TGA approval because optimal protection for doctors and nurses directly involved in Covid airway management is not able to be provided by most health services, due to supply chain issues. Essentially, until the hospitals have access to medical-grade PAPR such as CleanSpace Halo (and nobody is saying it is their fault that they don’t), then most of us respectfully don’t care what they think - we will protect ourselves and also ensure that patient care is not compromised. Some 60 doctors have died in Italy, largely due to high viral loads encountered from close treatment of Covid patients. While health services have a duty of care to workers, their inability to manifest that does not remove the right of individuals to see to their own care. The contact via 3M was regarding the filtration properties of various filter cartridges. This is an emergency measure that some have chosen to undertake during a crisis. We hope we won’t have to undertake it for long.
