I think it’s brilliant how Gadd turned his trauma into art with this series. I’ve seen mixed reactions and many folks wonder how he could’ve possibly re-lived his trauma through acting it out, but I don’t think it’s much different (in regards to re-living past trauma) than someone writing a memoir featuring personal trauma. Or participating in TED Talks, speeches, interviews, etc. He created something that goes beyond just sharing one’s story via words. Film and TV provokes almost all of our senses. It goes beyond just reading or hearing about another’s lived experiences; It allows us to live it with them. Much like I’m sure young Gadd was at the time of the events of the show’s re-enactments, I had no idea what was coming next and was more horrified as every episode passed. The courage it took to create something that resonates with people, despite the outlandish nature of Martha’s character and even of Gadd’s comedic journey, is immeasurable. Many comments here convey that people think Gadd was unjustly portrayed in his show, but I think his portrayal of himself reflects how he was feeling about himself during the events. It’s not rare that we see ourselves drastically differently than others do, after all. Baby Reindeer is a beautiful and tragic work of art with which Richard Gadd has so graciously allowed us to see this part of his life through his eyes. Sharing something like this with the world, especially through film, is outrageously brave. I am just in awe of his courage and I hope this project has propelled his healing journey even further along. Well done.

I didn’t argue anything about stopping - I said any potential “trauma” is a result of his bad decisions. Everyone around him persistently tells him that he appears to enjoy the mayhem in his life, and he himself agrees (for example that he enjoys Martha being in his life as she sees him the way he wants to be seen, even though he admits she’s dangerous) - that’s HIS decision. He also ironically claims he wishes it could be him who has ruined his own life, totally oblivious that it’s his actions that put him there.

You know how they say "if you don't learn a lesson, it'll keep repeating itself" by this I truly believe that the reason all the bullshit kept happening to him, is because he had to learn to stand up for himself and speak out about the shit that happened to him. Now that he did, he has gotten everything he was so desperate for! Hopefully he learns to love himself better❤

Just watched the show over the weekend and it was very interesting. It's really crazy to think that 'Martha' inadvertently saved his life because the incident forced him to face and conquer his demons. Before Martha he seemingly accepted his fate as a washed up comedian that was kind of just floating through life as another victim of trauma. He became stronger because of it. It created stronger bonds with his mom and dad as well.

I just watched the show binged it all today and omg the way I bawled my eyes out at the end… fucking hell watching him having a panicked attack after talking to his rapist was so fucking hard to watch.. seeing himself in that bartender and seeing himself in Martha, the talk with his parents and how supportive they were made me cry so much too.. I just kept crying and crying. The whole monologue scene was so hard and cringe to watch but also so relatable and real…

There's a saying that "comedy is tragedy plus time." It suggests that many comedians use humor as a coping mechanism to deal with their own personal struggles or hardships. So, while they may appear jovial and entertaining on stage, they may also carry a lot of sadness or pain when they're not performing. It's the irony of finding laughter in the midst of sorrow.

I recently went through rough things in my life, cancer, mom died, got divorced to name a few... going thorugh it and the aftermath have been the most difficult couple of years of my life but comedy, making it funny takes off some of the pain i guess because I've told my story to a few people and I tell it as a comedy routine. I dunno it's such a weird paradox

Just watched this show on a whim. Absolutely incredible writing, every character so well crafted and the sheer desperation you feel when you see each character lying themselves and to others is heart-wrenching. I also loved the ending, which provides hope but is realistic about the risks of lapsing back into old habits and patterns of thought and the risks of being thrown back into trauma. Spectacular TV series. I hope the writer and actors and crew get the recognition they deserve.

@@breadheadtv_ I only found out after writing the above comment that the guy wrote and acted it. I've scanned around and it seems the antagonist is also aware now. Sort of sours the story for me, because I know it's now on-going. Still, I think the writer shows himself so vulnerable in a way a lesser writer would not. There's probably still a lot left in the lurch, such is human!
