We’re joined by Richard Gadd, who’s turned his real-life experience of being stalked into a hit TV series ‘Baby Reindeer’. Working behind the bar of a pub, he offered one female punter a free cup of tea after she claimed she couldn’t afford a drink. That single act of kindness set off a series of events which would change his life forever. The woman - ‘Martha’ - went on to send him 40,000 emails and 350 hours of voicemail while obsessively stalking him outside his home, at his workplace and at his comedy gigs. Richard joins us today to explain why he wanted to share his story and how it feels to have created Netflix’s current number-one TV series.

After watching it I thought it was the best ever. However now I'm not so sure. I believe it needs a warning as could trigger people. Not all of us go onto to self destruct, use drugs and generally destroy everyone around us, there is another path. I fear this gives licence to the negative path. Has the male been charged? If not why not? Is he still out there roaming freely? Gadd said in another interview that the stalker in the series is so far from the truth of the real one she wouldn't even recognise herself 🤔 I do think once the press dig deep into this, which they will, it's not as factual and heroic as he's made out.

Episode 4 for me is one of the finest pieces of exposition I've ever seen in film. It was also so refreshing seeing a true telling of what a person goes through, discovering their sexuality, instead of a writers imagined experience. Since it is his story, the authenticity all came through that much stronger

Part of why I believe him is due to the fact that he doesn’t always come across great in the series. He’s constantly doing stuff that makes you want to scream, “Stop encouraging her!! Don’t you see that she’s going to latch onto that and further believe her delusions about your relationship!?” as well as making a series of bad decisions that make an already bad situation worse. If he was lying he wouldn’t have included truths that make him look bad. But the decisions he made are so common with people dealing with loneliness and trauma. I mean, I was really depressed years ago and got into a toxic relationship. I was just lucky that he wasn’t a stalker, or maybe I’d have a story like his too. Showing the truth of his situation will hopefully make people more aware of their own actions and how to keep themselves safe. After what I went through I wholeheartedly believe that if you’re depressed or actively working through trauma of some kind it’s best not to date. You’re too vulnerable to potentially end up in a toxic situation. Hopefully she’ll see the show and get help so she doesn’t hurt herself or anyone else. Thank you for telling you’re story! I hope you’ve found peace, happiness, and healing. God Bless.

I went to school with Richard, back then I was a spotty rather unpopular young man who was going through a lot of gender identity issues behind the scene and had also been a victim of an SA by an older man, I found Richard to be quite a mean person who was more than willing to engage in use of homophobic slurs against me and my few friends and was more than happy to be the bully to fit in with his group and not seem gay. Our guidance teachers were Ms Hutchinson and Mr Tarvet we attended Madras College. I am glad to see that Richard has lost some of his less savoury behaviours and improved with age. I wish him well. Perhaps he has now a better understanding of the power of other peoples behaviour to cause hurt and as a victim of other people maybe he can now understand that I forgive his actions but will never forget them and the impact they had on my younger self.
