This has to be one of the greatest moments in Canadian sports history. I remember watching this vividly as an 8 year old. (Now 33) I still get goosebumps watching it.

@@pjaye3717 I have vivid memories of Donovan Bailey breaking the world record under 10 seconds here in Swanguard Stadium when I was like 9 or 10. Pretty crazy how that track is within walking distance from where I lived. He's inspired me to this day as someone who's action, no talk.

The man was in 2nd last place 30 metres into the race. He overtook 4 guys in the last 50 metres. Until I started sprinting, and getting formal coaching, I had no clue how difficult something like this really was. This is easily a top 5 of all time in the Olympics.

The shot of him celebrating with his hands down at his side while he's screaming was turned into a poster with 9.84 printed on it and I saw that poster EVERYWHERE as a kid in Southern Ontario. I remember it so vividly. I'm almost 40 years old now, and this moment in Canadian sports still sends chills up my spine.

The was one of the better 100m performances I've ever witnessed. I, mean, he came from behind to not only win Olympic Gold, but setting a new WR, as well.

One of the few times I jumped out of my chair watching a sporting event. (The 4x100m win the week after, the 2002 and 2010 Olympic men's ice hockey gold medal game and the 2014 women's ice hockey Olympic gold medal game.

What a wonderful moment for Canada ! Today like Donnavan , Andrew De Grasse makes history by winning the the gold medal in men's 200 m. Even if it's not the 100m like Donnavan, it's wonderful for Andre and Canada. 🎖️🇨🇦

Donavan was boss that day! I remember working the night shift and driving to Oakville near Toronto from Scarboro to see him at the parade honoring him.

A great win to be sure but it doesn't match up to Percy William's double victory at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics in the 100/200 m. sprints. I doubt if a Canadian will ever win that double again.

That was an amazing race by Bailey and a great call by the commentators! Such redemption for Canada and Canadian Track and field after what happened with Ben Johnson in Seoul.

I don't 't know what happened in Canada, but what Donovan did made me happy although at the time I didn't know much about Canada. He was famous in Europe too. What a great athlete! Now I live in Canada, and I love all its athletes.

You can literally see him switch into his next gear. Amazing technique towards the end, almost Cheetah like. His muscles are in full performance mode, his upper body is being used to propel him forward, longer strides, no flat feet. Very well done!

Don Wittman was best CFL NHL Olympic broadcaster of all time. We had it too good with Wittman and Bob Cole Chris Cuthbert on cbc sports for so long.

This is a great example of drafting in 100m sprints, Donovan matched the strides of the sprinters next to him and safely over strides to move up

That was fantastic. Bailey just ate up the track coming from behind in a 100 meter race. No doubt Bailey in 1996 was the Usain Bolt. The fastest man alive.

I think Donovan vicariously redeemed all Canadian track fans who esteemed Ben Johnson in the 80’s and had their faith obliterated after Seoul. I know for me that’s all I could think about when Bailey won that race… Seoul redemption!

Look at the ground Bailey made up, surely his straight line speed must be in the top 3 of all time. He is notoriously a bad starter, if he had a good start he would of clocked in the low 9.70's which would been out of this world then until Powell and Bolt arrived decade later.

The false starts hurt his start. If you go back and watch all the false starts, Bailey had a good jump each time. Its like he picked it up once he knew the race was on.

Not necessarily. Every sprinter has an finite amount of energy. A better start and perhaps his finish isn't as good. What would be the difference in saying if Boldon had a better finish, he would have won?

He was about 5th early on... then just freight trained to a convincing win... and the only guy in the front set that didn't tip ahead to try and gain ground. Awesome run.

I haven't followed any track and field for a long time and I obviously respect the achievements of people like Usain Bolt, but the sprinters of the 80s and 90s were wild. Absolutely loved when Bailey called Michael Johnson a chicken for faking an injury and I'm American.😂

Bailey has always had a slow start though. It was always a matter of whether or not he could catch up. That's why it's shocking to me that: a. He once tied the world record for fastest 50m. b. He beat Michael Johnson at the 75 mark in their 150m race. This was the race where the turn was at the *start* of the race and Johnson was considered the best turn runner at that point. Bailey has given us great memories.

He would have been about 9.80 if a decent starter. I was in Bolivia that summer and watched this from there with my friend from Canada as well. The 4 X 100 gold as well. Great memories of Canada's days of sprinting prowess!

You can see Bailey stutter at the start, hesitate, then start the race. He's last at around the 15m mark. Still wins by a WR. Ridiculous.

As an American, this guy Bailey really crushed us when he beat Johnson. I thought it would die down but then Brett Hart brought it up on WWF and reminded the world lmao. That’s when I knew that it was time to throw in the towel and give the Canadians their 15 minutes of fame
