It was later revealed that the entire 1988 final line up except for the lone Brazilian were on PEDs including Carl Lewis. Ben Jonhson was made the escape goat.
@@Revolver1981 why ? Why? Because he was the fastest guy hands down . Dude was a beast and what better person to use as an example and scapegoat than the fastest guy himself . Think man
I remember like it was yesterday, and the unbelievable build up and tension. Ben Johnson’s final win was for me the greatest eye boggling sprint I’d ever seen up until Usain Bolts lightning win in Beijing 2008.
@@juckimal You missed the point, my eyes were boggled and the mind was blown - that doesn’t change, regardless. I didn’t know he was a cheater until the Stanazalol bombshell hit a few days later. I was absolutely disgusted and embarrassed. It was an eye opener and ruined my trust in all athletes. I even stopped going to the gym for 2 years. In 1988 only few people knew about the slimey world of PEDs until the Johnson story broke. Youngsters like myself at the time looked up to Jamaican ex- pats like Johnson to boost image and smash baseless stereotypes. The man broke the hearts and goodwill of believers.
@@Pulsonar More than 80% of top athletes today are on some form of PED's. The temptation is there, the science is always keeping up with it, and there is simply too much money for all parties involved. Most organizations even permit some level of it because they know these athletes are the most entertaining. It is naive to think that athletes today have "evolved" or worked on better techniques. Especially when men are producing 33% less testosterone in their systems naturally than they did two generations ago, and are 2.5" shorter on average. They are all on more advanced forms of juice.
My opinion, the USA had a problem seeing their golden boy, Carl Lewis lose. Ben Johnson was not the only guy or girl on drugs. Ben ran a 9.79 in the finals, that was a shocking time then, and a time now that is better than all modern sprinters, except Bolt, Powell, Blake and Tyson Gaye.
@@shillosmoullas5668 exactly, for anyone to believe that the women’s race from this olympics was clean is dumb or an idiot. I mean that record still stands today, and flo Jo didn’t have any outstanding physical characteristics (extreme height) that would suggest she could have run that time and still keep the world record today with the advancements in science, nutrition etc etc.
I still don't give a sh1t, Ben is a star. Carl was juiced up like crazy and apparently had been caught twice before but it was taken care of. Ben is still the winner.
@@Schooner77 how about doing some fact checking before spreading false information. It's called the dirtiest race in history for a reason. Ben was the fall guy.
Man o man!! I can think back to watching this on tv sitting on the floor as a kid!!! I didn’t know I was supposed to only root for Americans LOL! I was CLAPPING FOR BEN JOHNSON LIKE MY HANDS WERE ON FIRE! Lol LONG LIVE THE KING!!!! Mr. Ben Johnson was the greatest!
If Johnson was American, Russian, or East German, the IOC would have turned a blind eye like they did with the East German swimmers, Carl Lewis, and FloJo.
Walaupun Mardi gagal mencapai final...tapi kita semua merasa bangga...ada atlit 100m bisa bertanding dg para top atlit dunia... Apakabar ya pak Mardi sekarang.? Semoga sehat..👍👍
Just an ignorant comment from a fuckwit. What you don't know -- and I do because I WORK in the field -- is that the US catches it's drug cases FASTER than any other country does. America's doping controls are BETTER than any other country's. Spend about five seconds in a statistics class and learn the concept of "survivorship bias", you ninny. Youre just another MORON bullshitter who knows NOTHING and just spews nationalistic nonsense. Get half a brain.
@@kwakuasare316 lmao, they'll never make anabolic steroids legal mate. Technically Carl Lewis should have been banned from the 88 games, I'm not arguing that, but he didn't get an unfair advantage for what he was taking, Johnson's yellow eyes were popping out of his skull for christ sake.
@@barrylongstaff2816 Lewis was never done for drugs, it was found out years later that he took some herbal medication, which are now legal. Christie was a drug cheat for sure.
If Ben Johnson were an American like me, our US CIO committee would have covered his sins. We have many doped athletes for years but we covered their sins.
Watching these races, sprint mechanics have come a long way. Ben's technique was sound and transferable to this era though and Carl has always had the so photogenic prototype style.
I remember this race very well. I sat with family and friends who watched it with great anticipation. Ben Johnson was subsequently disqualified for taking the banned steroid stanozolol. His name lives in infamy like other drugs cheats who were caught.
@@samoso6979 Not on steroids but some kind of stimulants. Carl Lewis was definitely using some PED, but it's obvious by his shape that no anabolics were part of it. He wasn't overly muscular unlike Ben or Flo-Jo.
*Keren Mardi Lestari dari Indonesia satu2nya dari benua asia yg pernah masuk semifinal olympiade 1988 melawan para legenda pelari 100 m kelas dunia. Indonesia bangga !!!*
And here in the UK, Linford Christie is still seen as one of the best -if not the best - sprinter, and he was doped up here in '88 and throughout his career. question marks over Carl Lewis too.... the difference in this era is between those sprinters who were caught.... and those whose reputations escaped free from doping.
Ben Johnson is the Mike Tyson of sprinting(And MAYBE Carl Lewis is the Muhammad Ali of sprinting). But Ben was the man. My God how fast he was, and what a starter!
I met Ben at the theater in Scarborough. He was on a date with a tall blond. I had to go up to him. Je was so nice. I could tell he was apprehensive at first because hes probably still going through hell from IGNORANT and ride people. I had a tear in my eye because of that. I had a big smile and shook his hand and told him how amazing he is!!! He lit up like a Christmas tree and thanked me. It was a great and spontaneous moment.
I had a similar experience twice he was not well recieved at a bar in Sudbury...I had to go tell him I thought he was the best...made his day and mine...then 5 or 6 years later in Jamaica he was at at the resort bar I was staying at...he recalled my kindness amongst the hostile crowd in Sudbury. He's a good soul.
The atmosphere was electrifying, the rivalry legendary. Ben's crash from stardom was catastrophic. So much for winners take it all sporting world. That was an era. Sadly doing game persists despite sanctions.
That would be the cover of sports illustrated. he was never on the cover of Newsweek, and wasn't on the cover of time until October 1998, ten years later.
flo jo didnt get caught. she quit before getting random testing. timing is everything. now her sprinting records are still standing to this day. hard for clean athletes to beat PEDed florence.
Ben was one of the greatest sprinters in all history! They were all on juice. Even more than people know! And sprinting is not clean today! Sport makes so much money (and represents countries) that they NEVER really tackle the problem seriously, the way they could.
It’s crazy how in 34 years the 100 meter record has gone down only .21 seconds. Ben was the greatest. This is the most historic 100 meter sprint race and one of my favourites to watch
@@stevegasparutti8341 Ans so were the rest of the field! Everyone in that final went on to test positive a different stages of their career. Don't be so naive
I watched the t.v this day when johnson "won" and lewis was my idol and i refused to think he loose in this way without knew ... This is the day were the athletism is dead.
