So, the only advantage of the more efficient thermals for the housing and cooler is... lower temps. Seems like something that could be changed in firmware updates, but that's really something that would have been done out of the starting gates if they wanted to move more units. The Studio is for Mac Mini users who need the extra processing power, and don't want to pay more for a MBP to use in clamshell mode.

I am Telling you guys, and I told you on another video. The Mac studio was not supposed to happen. It only happened because apple was not able to run the M1 ultra cool and quiet enough in the studio display. The studio display was actually supposed to be the 27 inch iMac, this is why it is so thick and has so many vents, and also this is why it is so expensive. I think the initial plan was to have the normal 27 inch iMac with M1 pro and maybe M1 max… and then, a pro version with the M1 ultra. And when they realized that they were not able too cool it down enough (the M1 ultra) they came out with the Mac studio I am also 99% sure that the Mac studio was supposed to be the Mac Pro, where they would have used the M1 ultra and the 4 M1 max chips “glued” together, probably called, m1 ultra duo 😂 There is absolutely no reason having a display with 2 fans in it cooling an A13 Bionic Also there is no reason having a system with a cooler able to cool the system at idle speeds of the fans under heavy load… it clearly shows that this system was designed initially to cool down a much more powerful chip

Battery damage is a real thing if you kept the MBP plugin all the time. I’m using MBP clamp shell mode for a while and just change my battery. It is not advisable to keep laptop plugin 24/7 I’m tire of maintaining the battery. MBP 14 and MS is 1k diff is a lot not a little bit. Having nice but small screen is counter productive.

I have a Mac Studio M1 Max 64GB 32 Core 2TB on order till June. I am replacing a 2015 5k iMac an/or 2018 13" MacBook i7. So I haven't had M1 yet. I was waiting for a 5k iMac refresh but that didn't come. So I decided to go in with the Studio. While I'm waiting and researching I decided to consider a laptop. This video probably sealed it for me. I just ordered a refurb 16" 32 Core 32BG 1TB. I think it will meet and exceed my needs for a while. This way I guess it can replace both of my current devices. The iMac was getting long in the tooth. Unfortunately neither machine will probably have much resell for me right now. Maybe will jump on the next gen Studio. Thanks for all of your insight and testing! Great content.

Not knocking on Max, just to be clear, and I'm a subscriber to this channel because of their know-how. But in the end, I feel you can never win with so many opinions. I pre-ordered a Max Studio base model and bumped it up to 64gb of ram and 1tb storage for $2599.00. I'm sticking with my choice and don't care to whatever anyone says. Furthermore, I'm currently using a mid-2014 MBP (Intel) plugged in to the wall since the battery has died, but it's still working. As soon as the new one ships, I'm repairing the laptop and holding it for backup. Think about it, my current machine is going on for almost 9 years. So just imagine the new machine that has good ventilation and no battery swelling to worry about, in addition to that I've always used all my MBP's closed on a stand with an external monitor, keyboard and mouse. How long do you think the Max will last. I'm not knocking on RU-vidrs just in case, but I'll stick with my gut feeling on this one. I only use Lightroom and Photoshop, so this is way more than I'll ever need and besides, I like the way it looks.

Tried the laptop solution and it’s a mess of cables and dongles, poring out of both sides. Having all your ports on one side/ face, is so much more neat & tidy. Not to mention it’s more convenient in a studio. The performance issue is just Negligible. For 99% of us, anything with an M1, is WAY faster than what we are using and we don’t care about a few paltry percent.

I think the price premium for the MacBook Pro makes a lot of sense, you can use the MacBook exactly like a desktop when desired with equivalent power, and then have the additional flexibility of using it on the go or at least in other parts of the home besides the desk. However, if you already a desk setup and are ok with a desk-exclusive machine, saving >1000$ is pretty significant. Then again, the vast majority of buyers have no need to get the M1 Max over the M1 Pro and a 14" M1 Pro price matches the Studio but gives an order of magnitude more flexibility. I have to agree that most buyers would be much better served with an M1 Pro MacBook instead of the Studio.

The Studio is the only way to get the Ultra chip and the cheapest way to get the Max chip. I agree that the design is ugly and primarily because the cooling solution is ridiculously space consuming and it isn’t being used. They probably could have used the original Mac mini cooling solution if they keep their chips clocked so low. I have been using an M1 Mac mini with eight gigs of RAM. Multitasking is not as good as on my 32 GB three-year old iMac with a core I five. I ordered a base model Studio with 1 TB HD. When I have eight or 12 different apps running and three dozen documents open throughout various programs, I want instant performance, not hiccups. As I get older, portability is a secondary concern. Large screen real estate is important for my work and becomes increasingly important for me as my vision gets worse with age. Frankly, if they made a 16 inch Mac air for 1600 or 1700 bucks, I would buy that for the mundane things I do on a mobile display.

If you plug your laptop into a monitor and work on a desk, the MBP is very poor value compared to a Studio. Spec for spec , studio is cheaper has better io and for most people who work in a study with a hub/monitor(s). The MBP spec’d out only really makes sense to individuals who work on the road . Most people I know who bought a laptop …. Used it a handful of times while not at home. One major factor , if you plan to drop $$$ a desktop will be more reliable and outlive a laptop , laptops all die from heat eventually, and have more components they can fail.

I thought the M1 Max on the Mac Studio would perform better. But what this actually boils down to is that for an additional $500 or so you can get a desktop system with an M1 Max (the Mac studio) and a 27" gorgeous screen, compared to the 16" inch Macbook Pro. What a surprise. You get the same performance when buying the same SOC. Who would choose a desktop over a laptop to gain a (supposed) performance improvement of a few percent!? You choose the Studio because you want a desktop. It's as simple as that. What does the display of the MBP do for me sitting in clamshell mode all the time? Same for the keyboard and trackpad. What I "gain" is worrying about the damage I do to the battery having it constantly plugged in. I'd much rather have a stationary desktop and a nice M1 MBA for on the go. Does everyone have the same preference and needs as I do? Of course not. For many (I guess even most) an MBP is probably the better choice. But certainly not because of any minuscule performance difference.

Nah. I need a desktop. Even if I was willing to get a MBP and Clamshell it the Mac Studio I got is still 1200€ cheaper than the equivalently specced MBP 16 inch and almost 1000€ cheaper than the equivalent 14 inch MBP. I need a big display and as nice as the MBP's display is it's definitely not enough. Also I tried clamshelling the MBA and the temps were absolutely trash - I don't want a laptop sitting on my desk all the time I/O is also much better, I look forward to those ports on the front and not depending on my USB-C hub for USB-A peripherals.

If Mac studio (M1 max) is only option - the question is 24 vs 32 GPU cores? Usage: FCPX, motion, photoshop, little 3D. No one has compared this model’s! Please help me to choose. ❤️
@MegaChriz
@MegaChriz 2 года назад
I think I will go for the 32 GPU cores version - only because of my 3D modeling ambition. I expect the 32 GPU cores model to perform 20-30% better than the 24 GPU core version in Blender and I find that worth enough the extra 230 euro. I thought for a moment if the Ultra would be an option for me, but that would add another 2000 euro to the price which I think would be a bit too crazy since 3D is only a hobby for me. If you are looking for a comparison between the two: I saw in other videos that the Mac Studio with 24 GPU cores performs about the same as the 14 inch MacBook Pro with 24 GPU cores (in some tests the 14 inch performed slightly better, in others the Studio did slightly better). So I expect that the Studio with 32 GPU cores would perform about the same as the 14 inch MacBook Pro with 32 GPU cores. There should be videos out there that are comparing the 24 core GPU with 32 core GPU in the 14 inch MacBook Pro.

If I got a Macbook pro then I'd still need to buy a 27 inch - 34 inch monitor as well because about 85%-90% of my work would be at my workstation at home and I would not spend hours on end perched over a 16 inch Macbook screen at home, as good a display as it is. I understand what you are saying - that the Studio gets you no performance improvement while the Macbook gives you portability, and that is a factor worth considering when deciding what to buy. The Macbook is about £1,000 ($1300) more than the equivalent Mac Studio here in the UK. With either computer, I'd need to buy a monitor so the Macbook will still cost me a lot more. It therefore boils down to whether the significant extra cost justifies being able to use the Macbook away from home, viz, the portablity option. Probably not for me, since it would only amount to about 10-15% of my usage and I can always use my Windows laptop with iCloud for Windows installed for that.
@denisleblanc4506
@denisleblanc4506 2 года назад
I think the conclusion is somewhat off. First of all, if the two machines have the same performance and one does not run hot...which one has a better chance of running longer without problems? Secondly, laptops are loosing popularity to tablets. With universal control, you get real portability with the tablet and at home you have the larger screen of the Studio with a monitor. People already set up for a desktop won't consider the laptop. You can get a base Studio and a nice iPad with cellular making a better combination than a laptop. More connectivity when traveling (with cameras) you can use the iPad for zoom calls which will be as good as the laptop and it will still be cheaper than the laptop.

Problem with your analysis is that I want a large display so I can actually read the text on the screen. I have a 13" MBA and it's tough. It doesn't matter if I have a 120Hz screen or not, I don't play games and videos are fine on my older iMac. When you talked about the MacBook Pro having three TB ports, which can be expanded using a TB dock (I have the OWC 4-port dock you're using), all you're getting is more connections not more TB channels. The Studio has four channels, although one goes to the display so it's actually the same but the display has three USB-C ports while the Studio has two USB-A/B(?) so you actually have enough USB ports for wired a keyboard, mouse, etc. The MBP will need docks and hubs to expand. The MBP also doesn't have a wired ethernet port, something I still use because gigabit ethernet is still faster than WiFi 6 and isn't compromised by walls, etc. Yes, it means I'm locked into a single place but that's the desk where my desktop resides. Having a 10GB means it's future proof, waiting for fiber internet to get above gigabit speed. I also like the Studio Mac because it can easily be opened, especially by Apple, to repair certain things while the MBPs are more difficult to get into and the battery is probably the first thing that will have problems. The Studio doesn't have batteries except for the UPS all my gear is attached to. Everyone has a different situation. I'm trying to take my MBA on travel, using my iPhone as a hotspot, but my simple iPad does most of the things I need when away from home. I'll stay with a desktop until Apple comes out with a 24" MBP Air. 😉 added: Went through costs. Studio Mac 10/24 32GB 2TB storage, std Studio Display, expensive wireless keyboard and mouse ($300 combined but keyboard has TouchID, which I mike on my MBA). total $4891 (ouch!) 14" MBP 10/24 2TB $3500, add $1600 Studio Display so I can read the screen, $5100. Not going to get an LG display if/when they ever come back but they are $1299 so save $300 and the MBP/LG display would cost $100 less than the Studio Mac/Display option. Not really sure I'd want to take a $3500 MBP through any TSA station so my only travel would be land based. I sure wouldn't want to trust any airline to not lose it if I checked my baggage.

I think they will. The big lift was designing the rest of the package for Studio around the chipset and getting it to market. Probably hoped it wouldn't be a big deal out of the gate, but people are noticing, that's for sure. Seems like Apple does a good job of ironing out the initial quirks with new designs pretty well and quickly after release. The Max chip in the MacB was mostly good to go as is, minus this one issue which really won't affect most users. But for the ones it may affect, they sure do and should care about it.
@eurly93

Never gonna happen. Same way even though iPad Pro has an M1 chip they will never let it run Mac OS until people stop buying iPads altogether. Apple's product strategy is about making it easy for customers to pick a product. The difference between $2k Mac Studio and $3k Macbook pro is exactly the following: portability. That's it. This makes purchasing decision very easy if you already have a laptop, Mac Studio. If you don't, Macbook Pro. There's 1 very tangible difference and it doesn't need to be explained. You can't have a cheaper product outperform a more expensive one if you're a 'luxury' tech company, even if it makes logical sense to an tech minded person. The 99% of people buying Apple products have no clue what 'thermal throttling' is. All they know is that the more expensive one should be better, faster, have more cameras, etc. iPhone, iPad, its all the same. They always make it so there is only 1 or 2 differences between tiers of products, but it is ALWAYS a tangible difference that non tech people will be able to grasp. 3 camers > 2. Stainless Steel > Aluminum. Thinner Bezels > Thick bezels. Mini LED vs Regular LED. Noise cancelation vs no noise canceling etc.
@JohannesLabusch
@JohannesLabusch 2 года назад
@@darnation8650 There's a huge difference between "ironing out quirks" and dictating to customers what limitations they have to live with. If you're not brand new to Apple, you have fond memories of peripherals being rendered useless over night, options and connections deleted under the guise of "streamlining" and generally them not giving a hoot about what people want and need. "Here's the future, now live in it!"
@darnation8650
@darnation8650 2 года назад
@@JohannesLabusch You have a valid point, but really has nothing to do with what my comment was about. Was just responding to what should be a fairly routine bit of firmware optimization sometime not long after units start shipping for the Studio line. I am both new and not new to Apple. A lot of my friends use Apple product exclusively. I always play around with what they have and stay up on Apples new releases. I am very familiar with all the gripes and issues with Apple. While i love their machines, the environment is just too limiting for my needs. I can very much see the allure for pure creatives though. I do a lot of real-time, high frequency trading, and i travel rather frequently. For the foreseeable future, x86 architecture is best for my needs, as well as the flexibility to build, modify, and repair my machines anywhere in the world with zero time delay. In many ways, Apple machines to me are objects of art. Art tends to be both arbitrary and finicky. Apple does what Apple does and if you want to buy into their techno-art, then you must be prepared to pay a premium for the sometimes weird and arbitrary choices they make and limit their users to.

For those who don't want or need a laptop 3 words come to mind: context, connectivity and portability. The Max 1 chip is more than enough for creatives at a decent price if they already have a monitor and other essential peripherals. Which include audio interfaces etc. You never have to worry about batteries and using a laptop in clamshell mode still means you need to buy the connectivity. These are two separate products targeted to two separate audiences.

Hi thanks for another extensive clear test video. Like you i am surprised that the M1 MAX delivers exact same performance in the Mac Studio than in the MBP. Clearly they must have left the fine tuning untouched pother wise the Mac Studio would have performed better. However, I am not sure I follow you on the 3 potential explanations you gave. 1) Same chip performance regardless of chassis is what you mentioned. But that wouldn’t make sense because Apple does have a deliberate performance gap between the 14 inch and 16 inch M1 Max models (I recall your test in which the M1 Max 10/32 14 inch performed equal or worse to the M1 Max 10/24 core). 2) Higher performance on M1 would reduce the gap vis a vis the future M2: could be but if Apple would allow a difference between M1 Max in Studio vs MBP, then it is fair to assume they will allow similar performance difference between M2 chip in the MBP and Studio But perhaps there is a totally different explanation, one that is not so much focussed at performance management but more at price/positioning management. Developing new set of parameters for the M1 chip in the desktop chassis is a significant cost. By leaving the parameters as they are, all R&D spent on it will be spread over both models. Otherwise they have double the costs for developing the parameters and these costs must be recuperated. Which in turn would probably be a price increase of the Studio Base model which would disrupt there carefully build pricing structure within a model range but especially between two different lines. Or something that may sound silly but perhaps they just didn’t have time to develop and test new parameters and since they already delayed plenty of new hardware, delaying the new studio base model would basically have pulled the rug un der the most important element of the Peek Performance event in March. Just some food for thought, you guys put a lot of effort in these test and take the time to explain it and I watch each and every one of them with great interest.
