So right, Richard. At least 7 songs worthy of being single releases . I've told anyone who would listen for decades now that I played 2 albums obsessively in 1973: "The Captain and Me" and Steely Dan's "Countdown To Ecstasy," and "Skunk Baxter" played on both of them.
Still playing today, still putting out great music and they can't even get a nomination, a goddamed NOMINATION, to the Rock Hall of Fame, while they are putting RAPPERS in.
One of the most underrated bands around. Listen to other bands try to cover this song, they just don't find the groove and can't match the subtle complexity and pure musicianship of what the Doobies accomplish on stage and in the studio.
Sincerely love the Doobies! The Captain and Me was my very first Doobie album I ever bought. As I have aged, “Dark Eyed Cajun Woman,” has become my favorite of their songs. Perhaps it’s because it wasn’t played as much as the so called hits were or perhaps my taste in music has changed. I’m nuts about the blues now, but listening to this song after living close to New Orleans in my young manhood, I can picture in my mind this beautiful woman he sings about. I went to see them play in Boone, NC. Unfortunately they didn’t play that song. Chicago was with them and it probably cut down on their playlist. Still an incredible song to me!

One of the greatest albums ever recorded. So many great works on it. My favorite from the 70's. I feel this was a pinnacle of guitar rock bands, then they went pop! Man did that suck.
Nevada half Cheerokie half Creol from Louisiana introduced me to this song...Vietnam had just ended.i had the Album but i didnt know this beautiful song was in there...Crazy College days...Zeppelin,Pink Floyd The Doobies and soo many live Concerts soo many up coming bands were all getting started...Even BB King thank you very much Ladies and Gentleman...Thank You Nevada...Dark Eye'd Cajun Woman.

when i had my CUDA 340 in 1973 -75 when rollin down the highway came on AM radio i allways had to put the hammer down in that damn car no wonder i dig these guys so much and that car only lasted 2 years under my ownership till its demise

Looks like Tom Olson ! Have not heard this in a long time, Still sound fresh, & sounds better than most of today music . I don't count rap as music, it is for people that can't play or sing

This is an ass kicker of a song to cover live even if you ARE the Doobie Brothers. Look at how many freaking moving parts there are in this song: Lead, Rhythm, Bass, Drummer, Tambourine, 3 part harmony and TWO KEYBOARD PLAYERS. Watch the video a few times. It's an awesome job and they weren't even TRYING to play the studio version :)
Indeed, very strong effort front-to-back, So many bands try to do the 'just make sure we get one hit on there, and mostly pad the rest with filler" "Natural Thing" is quite possibly my favorite Doobs tune... at least this week ;) Certainly on my short list.
I know it near impossible to match the speed of the recording process but this is being played way slower then what I can remember from the album. Still better live sometimes.
I heard that BFD. Johnston/Simmons are easily comparable lyrically to Simon/Garfunkel and Lennon/MeCartney. This was music that helped us Vietnam vets heal. RUIZ THE VET.
If there is a version of this song from Rockin Down the Highway, The Wildlife Concert I wish someone would post it. It is the best version of this song I have ever heard.
Are you sure? I thought Pat did the little leads in between the vocals. I agree that Tommy is probably playing the solo. I wish there was a way to find out who played what on the original Doobie Records. I can mostly tell if it's Tommy or Pat playing, but some parts are too hard to tell. I'm also curious who's playing drums. If it's one drum track, I can't tell if it's John, Mike, or (later) Keith. There should be a website...
I agree with all of the accolades from this tune but previous reproductions of this tune, in my experience, have sonically been far superior. What happened? Very disappointed with this version. It can be so much more superior and the Brothers deserve better! Great tune!
@guitardds No, I know what you're saying. While I still think this is a good live version, what happens is we get used to the album cut, because we listen to it over and over. Certain sounds/tones we start to attach to feelings/experiences. So when we hear the live version, we are sometimes let down when the artist deviates at all from the recording. But with all the studio work (remixing, editing, etc.), it makes it all most impossible to duplicate the original recording
Usually I like live recording over originals, however this one seems a little "routine" not impressed at all. On the original, Tom actually does some David Gilmour style guitar work. But this version, to many notes, and wrong guitar sound. But what do I know, I'm just a dude on a laptop.
@rosepetal108 most good amps these days still use tubes, I've got 2, a fame and marshall...and a solid state fender, but it really depends on what effects and set up you have on your guitar, there's no saying for sure what amp it is by listening to it. I have to say I hate the tone they use on their guitars. one's really tinny and one sounds too fake distorted.
