Sakurai didn't design the Smash menu. He said it borrows inspiration from it, but he's not the one behind it (in fact, it's usually his wife who designs the menus in his games, from other Smash titles to Kirby Air Ride or Meteos, but I dunno this time around, tbh).

I did join Pokémon late during the X and Y era though and don't see how it is "messy and imbalanced". Still, I obviously didn't like Pokémon for its world building...thus the late signup. That said, SMT is probably my favourite jRPG series of all time . I've only played the English release though. Used to be Star Ocean....but that went downhill after the third one. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky and Trails of Cold Steel is pretty damn good too.

Persona 5 is really the only game on ps4 that I am super interested in and I think it's pretty pointless buying a console for only one game. Plus, with the joker reveal, this is the most confident I've been that persona will come to the switch. I've heard some fans saying they could call it persona 5 crimson edition.

I think the excitement is less about the character as much as what the character means. A 3rd party character (and a very popular one at that) with a tenuous connection to Nintendo at all basically demonstrates that the options for the last four characters are damn near limitless. As much as many would argue it's not that important, it's kind of a big part of his character, and a staple of his series, and to remove that just would not feel right. That's one of the reasons Scorpion works for me... because he has no character, and therefore has nothing to lose (No, gore is not needed, MK purists). Who in their right mind runs two Fighting-type attacks on a Fire/Dark mon w/ neither of them being Drain Punch? They had all the usage stats at their disposal, but they only chose a single one of the top 6 most used Incin moves (the signature, that was a given, #6 most used move for Incin, btw), two moves w/ basically 0% usage, and one arbitrary prop special that would better fit Game&Watch. Idk where I wanted to go w/ that, but I guess I would appreciate an entry that didn't need any extra characterization like Dr. Mario or Ryu. Not so sure if Scorpion would fall under that though. He has many moves that would translate over well, just like Ryu, but he also has some signature moves that are kinda puzzling and make you think before attempting to code it in. How would his teleport work? They wouldn't just not include that, right?

To be fair, he played the game but didn't enjoy it. And then there's the community aspect as well. E.g. I don't like the Kingdom Hearts community at all. They actually made me quit the series as a whole. Whenever I see something KH related my mood drops and I loose all interest. I think the same happened to him. I personally love Persona but I see why the community can be really annoying and I think he even said that he doesn't like the community at all, but I could be wrong.

Hey, you mentioned Etrian Odyssey. Nice. I would have LOVED an EO character. EO is an amazing game series. But it's not really a game for the masses, and it's pretty obscure. I know Persona has great music, but IMO EO's music is it least as good. I am not surprised that it wasn't an EO character. :( But I do think we'll get a Dragon Quest character eventually. I really do.

Not to mention games under the Megami Tensei or Shin Megami Tensei banner have a long history with Nintendo. Even within the last five years or so, you've had Devil Survivor 1&2, SMT: Strange Journey, SMT 4, SMT 4: Apocalypse, and Persona Q on the DS or 3DS. I think Persona 2: Innocent Sin got re-released on the 3DS, but I might be mixing that up with something else.
