The last Doolittle Raider died in 2019. Most of their stories have been forever lost. However, the attack will always be remembered, as long as we allow it. These men knew they couldn't turn back, yet they still decided to go. My respect goes to all of them.

When this one crew landed in Vladivostok they technically did not escape, it was an agreement beetwen USSR and USA to release them free through Iran if my memory serves me right. Soviets announced their "escape" to save their neutrality because they promised Japan to stay out of the china-japan war. Just a small fun fact.

The Doolittle Raid did more damage to the morale of the Japanese than all of the potential damage all the bombs dropped could have ever done. The Doolittle Raid told the Japanese that they weren’t invincible. It proved what Admiral Yamamoto wrote after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Japan had awoken “a sleeping giant and filled it with a terrible resolve.”

Most successful part of this raid was showing Japan they could be hit back. The raid didn't need to do a ton of damage when the much greater effect of mortality was demonstrated to a nation that felt invincible at the time.

Its pretty widely believed the soviets let the crew go since they and the US we're allies at that point and didn't want to harm their relationship, but they captured them at first to not provocate the Japanese either with whom the had a NAP

Sad you didn't mention the tradition of the surviving Raiders meeting up on it's annual reunion. They would share a drink from the same bottle of 1896 Hennessy VS cognac (same year Doolittle was born) in personalized silver goblets, each engraved with their names twice, one right side up and the other upside down. The purpose was to flip the goblet when a Raider passed away. I had the privilege of seeing it with some goblets still upright, sadly this is no longer with the final passing Raider, Lt Col. Richard E. Cole, passed away age 103 (the only Raider to live older then Doolittle himself) on April 9, 2019. He'd also the the sole Raider to live to see the discovery of the wreck of the USS Hornet. RIP The Doolittle Raiders, the first men to strike back the Japanese on their homeland.

I do not agree with statement about the bomber crew, who landed in Vladivostok. They were pretty lucky. They were captured by NKVD, they were transferred to the prison in USSR on border with Iran. In WW2, Iran was occupied by allies, so it happed in that magical way that these pilots have escaped the prison and have headed to Iran to reunite with British troops. Actually, wait, no magic here involved - that was a special operation of NKVD to return these pilots back to allied troops and then back to USA.

9:27 That is not entirely true, due to the soviets not being at war with Japan, international law states that the crew had to be imprisoned for the duration of the war, but after some time they were secretly let go. The escape being a cover up story.

In 2014, I actually got to meet Doolittle's co-pilot in Dallas. He was one of the most incredible people I have ever met. God Bless these amazing heroes who were willing to give it all up for America

This video didn't mentioned the unfortunate effects made by the Doolittle raid. The Japanese reprisals on the Chinese in assisting the Doolittle raid was brutal, killing about 250,000 Chinese civilians. For the Japanese, the raid was the first time their homeland was attacked since the Mongol invasion and was a key influence for the invasion of the Alaskan islands and the Battle of Midway.

Cant wait of these Yarnhub how about making a special video about Pappy Gunn the maverick who organized a bombing mission in the Philippines a week before the Doolitlle raid known as the "Royce Raid" with 10 b-25's and a couple of operational b-17 ,operating from Del Monte air field Mindanao they bombed shippings along Davao and Cebu a b-17 even manage to have a bombing run in Luzon lessons he learned from this mission were extensively used in modifyig bombers especially A-20's and B-25's . Rescuing his family who were imprisoned back in the Philippines and defeating the Japanese as soon as posible becomes his greatest obsession. Hope could see that in the near future since his daring exploits are rarely being told.

It is true that the raid did little damage, however it dealt a major blow to Japanese moral telling them they f**ked up and now they aren't safe. As for the US it inspired them that the Japanese aren't invincible since at that time Japan had the best planes and Naval craft

There needs to be a super-like button on here. This has been a very emotional 10 minutes. I've just been taught not to fear outcomes but to press on towards my dreams. My efforts may appear as failure because of my own expectations, but to someone else it will be a source of inspiration.

I am a Veteran of the Air Force and I was assigned to be a maintainer for the 28th Bomb wing, the same Wing that was used for the Doolittle Raid...from B-25s to B-1bs, how far we have come.

The Doolittle Raid may not have done much damage, but it was a massive PR victory for the Americans. The quality of your animations continues to impress me, keep up the good work!

the crew that landed in the USSR and later "escaped" is a neat little footnote to this story. See, the USSR and USA were allies, but the Soviets had brokered a peace deal with Japan. They didn't want to invite a reignition of conflict on the Eastern coast while they were so busy fighting back the Germans; allowing American bombers to land would send completely the wrong message, which is a large part of why the Doolittle raid aimed for contested China instead of friendly USSR in the first place. But then, that crew went to the USSR anyway. Landed and were detained. Then they said, "Hey Japan, we captured some of those American raiders. We're transferring them to you soon!" Then while in transit, they happened to pass very close to friendly territory (or a ship, I can't quite remember off the top of my head) and the Americans "escaped" from the minimum-security escort, who presumably went, "Oh nooo please doooon't," as they let the Americans get away. Then, "Uh sorry Japan, but they escaped. Anyway good luck!" Another tidbit I love is that the Hornet was in the middle of a storm when the planes launched. The sky was overcast, the sea was heaving... and it was exactly what the bombers needed. The cloud cover hid them from spotters, and the pitching of the deck actually helped the bombers get airborne. A book I read mentioned how the pilots actually had to go full throttle while the front of the flight deck was pointing down into the water, so that when they reached the end, the Hornet will have pitched upward and actually helped them get a little jump-start. The Doolittle Raid is such an interesting story with a bunch of crazy moments within it, and I will never forgive the Pearl Harbor movie for getting it so wrong.

Fun fact modern carrier fighter planes like F-35C, F-18 E/F can carry much heavier loads than B-25 ( 15 tons vs 32 tons in the case of F-35)

I flew 500 miles on a B-25 to a air show in Troy Alabama with the war birds back in the 90s one of my best memories that plane was awesome great video.

Just 2 min in and the editing in this video (like in many other Yarnhub videos) is just superb. The transition from the warships to the attack on Pearl Harbor to the war room was so well done and fits the narration brilliantly.

Well done again Yarnhub !B-25 is one of my favorite allied bomber in world war 2 it's versatility and easy handling is well known to the allies who flew them another is it's armament the model H is equpped with 75mm cannon while the J model could be equipped with as many as 18 machine guns making it one of the heaviest armed aircraft of world war 2 . A minor miss out of detail that I recognize is that tailguns were not removed but in the actual tailguns were discarded and was changed by broomsticks in order to save some weight also the waist guns have been discarded. looks to me the b-25 here is heavily armed in the video...the only operational defenses are the top turret and the nosegun a certain article about the Doolittle raid is that their main defense is their prayers....i'll better do some more research maybe

There was a podcast I listened to this summer, “America’s Forgotten Heroes”, and they had an episode called “Jimmy Doolittle Releases the Brakes”. It’s over an hour long, so it’s able to go into more detail, with the stories of those that were captured by the Japanese being particularly heart-rending. I’d highly recommend it.

Every video seems better than the one before. It's like seeing a long running show like Futurama or Archer in the early seasons the compared to newer seasons.

Navy Captain Francis S. Low, Assistant Chief of Staff for antisubmarine warfare. This is the man who conceived of the idea of using land based bombers on Carriers. He presented the idea to the President and war staff. The book" 60 seconds over Tokyo" is a good read for WWII history buffs!
