This rare original 16mm silent film was donated to the Hornet Museum by the Knobloch Family. It documents the Doolittle Raiders training in B-25's at Eglin Field in March of 1942 prior to embarking on the USS Hornet for the Raid on Tokyo. The footage has been gently restored and presented with its original canister and film reel--special thanks to Bob Fish and ‪@GeorgeRetelas‬.
When you visit the Hornet Museum you are literally “stepping into/onto history”. This ship was there at the forefront of WWII in the Pacific where her record of combat accomplishments is legendary. Hornet finished her long career in the news again as she retrieved the Apollo 11 capsule and the astronauts who were the first humans to walk on the surface of the moon.
Today the USS Hornet Museum serves as a “living history” destination at Pier 3 in Alameda, where thousands of visitors walk through her “hatches” reliving history through the sights, sounds and even smells that are uniquely Hornet.
Since the adoption of our charter in 1998, The USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum has become the preeminent Naval history museum on the West Coast. The USS Hornet is the only aircraft carrier in the United States that is recognized as a National and State Historical Monument as well a repository of over 240 years of American naval military and cultural history and achievements, offering extensive resources for national and international visitors alike.
The USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum carries on a rich legacy of “Hornets”, as the first Hornet christened would become one of the most distinguished names in American naval history with her performance in the Revolutionary War. The first two ships in the new Continental Navy were "Hornet" & "Wasp".

What amazing footage . Seeing some of the pilots and crew that would never make it back is sad and to think that other than Doolittle they were still in their 20's .

My Dad helped to build those runways and ramps in 1939 and 1940 supposedly to train British pilots.

This was so secretive, I’m amazed anyone was allowed to film it! Jimmy Doolittle’s son, Ret Col. John Doolittle was a friend for many years. He came to my retirement ceremony from the USAF. Just missed meeting the General.

The only secret was the moment. The rest is and should be for history.

My dad was stationed at Eglin Field getting his instructor chops, and then training new fighter pilots for the Army air Corps. He came home one day and said to my mom, “there are a bunch of guys out on the end of the field with B25s, and they have painted white lines on the runway close together, and are trying to take off between them! “ “ gosh, I wonder what they could be doing? “. It was supposed to be so secret that no one was even allowed to fly over their position, but obviously, the flight instructors could see what was going on. Although he was killed after 120 missions in theETO, Mom always said she thought he had guessed exactly what was going on! And maybe so! We will never know.

God Bless your Dad as well as your Mother who was just as much a Hero as he was taking care of everything while the men were at war and keeping their families together. Thank You for sharing. If your Mother is still with you please give her my thanks.

Interesting that some aircraft can be seen with the broomsticks mounted in the tail blister. This was supposed to have been done at McClellan Field in Sacramento. Maybe finished up at McClellan? Also, some aircraft can be seen to have had their Bendix lower gun turrets removed, this was to be done for all the ships.
