No commentary playthrough of the total conversion mod for Doom 2 "Ashes Afterglow". Played on Apocalypse skill level, getting all secrets and aiming for a "good" ending.
Afterglow is the sequel for Ashes 2063, where the World faces the consequences of your actions. Aside from new levels, enemies, weapons, textures, and music... This time around the game also has a bit of hub based questing, where your actions and acquaintances will trigger multiple endings.
Imho, this mod is not only candidate for "mod of the year" awards, but "indie game of the year" awards.

Afterglow es la secuela de Ashes 2063, donde el mundo se enfrenta a las consecuencias de tus acciones. Además de nuevos niveles, enemigos, armas, texturas, y música... Esta vez el juego también tiene misiones que deberemos completar (o no), en un entorno dividido en bloques de varios niveles interconectados entre sí, donde nuestras acciones y amistades detonarán diversos finales.
En mi honesta opinión, este mod no es solamente candidato para "mod del año", sino "juego indie del año".

I had a realization in my second run of Afterglow: When you decrypt the floppy with this anomaly's coordinates in The Array and hear the sound file, both it and the radio signal you can listen to at the start of the level might seem to make sense as intelligent transmissions... But give them the context of this level and no. It's just the sounds of the Haunts inside the TK-210 Filadelfiya. Echoes of the past being emitted by these mutant-ghost things, and we can't even say if they're sapient enough to try and communicate. Shit, I just made The Array and this even creepier. send help

It lost its tension somewhat the moment it gave you something to shoot. That's why I found the Array creepier, with the self-opening doors and phantom footsteps giving you the idea that something is approaching you and you never find out what it is. Still made me shit myself though. That one corridor can go fork itself.

Actual audio is probably taken from one of the Russian "numerical stations" - radio stations that transmit various nonsense (usually combination of numbers and random words) from time to time, which is speculated to be kind of routine maintenance procedure to make sure radio equipment works as intended. I'd recommend to look the topic of numerical radio stations online, it's a very interesting read

When I first go to this level it took me two days to work up the courage to actually tackle it. When the lights turn red and the music stops suddenly it really got me. I'm not good at all with horror games and the atmosphere in this map is top notch spooky.

@@Potatoine I guess because the Spire is a building, and we knew it from 2063. The Filadelfiya here, though? It's completely alien. Think about it: a Russian nuclear submarine, stuck in a landlocked wetland, and still somehow functional. It _really_ blasted my bizarre-o-meter.

@@Potatoine And of the atmosphere, we cannot stress the Phantoms enough. Haunts were bad enough, but at least they sounded vaguely like former humans. Phantoms with their toneless radio broadcast voices don't even seem like that much, if anything they feel more like projections of the submarine, like it gained conscience and decided it doesn't like us inside it. And that's not even touching how much more aggressive they are than Haunts. I'm not too proud to admit, in the last corridor the phantoms popping out right close to me made me jerk my mouse WILDLY and fire the M16 in random directions for almost a full second. 💯% freaked out mode. Even The Array didn't have this effect on me, although it came close!

Right? The moment I saw that door open with no reason to a whole charnel house, I immediately remembered the talk about background despair and phenomena as described in the old terminals' messages. And background despair = Haunts. God I fucking hate Haunts.

Has anyone tried translating what is said when you use the small wind up radio? EDIT: Maybe also translate the audio from the Russian haunts? EDIT2: Russian haunts are called "phantoms" in the games script, you can use the name phantom in the summon command to summon one, they are called different names in different files, in their sprites they are called "DUKH" which I don't know what it's short for, other sprites are short for words or their name in the script, the haunts are called "GHST" in sprite, and "ghost" in script, but using command "summon ghost" doesn't work, the phantoms death noise is just called "radioghost/death"/

"Dukh" (дух) means "spirit" in Russian. These radio translations are just random numbers that don't really mean anything.

Yep! You have to revisit the Spire, get a floppy from a computer there. With that floppy you can print a map at another computer in the communications array

Scariest for damn sure. Perfectly fitting its status as a super-duper-secret level. Really, unless you're a damn bloodhound, you won't find this area in your first run. And that may be for the best.

When I saw the option to visit the anomaly I was like “Oh cool a bonus map!”. While “Anomaly” implies weird shit I expected maybe spooky woods or strange buildings or some shit. When I saw the submarine, I audible said “What the fuck?” The level itself is fucking great; I like that it actually takes time for the creepy shit to start getting flung. The build up is great in that sense and when the Russian Haunts show up its even better because they coukd have easily just used normal haunts in this level; but thats the thing: that what everyone would have expected. Not just do we fight a unique varient of them BUT they are twice as fucking creepy as they use the old russian radio messages instead of the normal screams and hisses AND explain what the transmission was. Im the Arrey: you never heard a radio transmission: you were hearing the sounds of ghosts

I have just finished it so I'll sav the review for the eventual next vid. Anyways, secrets 1. At <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="104">1:44</a>. In the first boiler room, there is a crawlspace if you go around it. 2. At <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="166">2:46</a>. In the hallway with all the rooms, there's an open fencing to go through. 3. At <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="450">7:30</a>. Before the red door.

@@antondavidovic3996 No. They're "elite" Haunts. And even then they don't share entity code, Phantoms don't even inherit from Haunts. And no, as duke of flies said, Phantoms don't replace anything, unlike Haunts replacing Cacos.

Fun fact this submarine is also a reference to old alpha and beta versions of HL2s wasteland and cut depot maps where the ocean was dried up and you had derelict ships along with a haunted and rusted out old nuclear sub you could explore.

I like the beginning of the level that starts very calmly, THEN, IT'S THE HORROR with the Russian ghosts, prisoner of the submarine. It's reminiscent of the movie Alien where we see the infamous alien late in the movie, thrill guaranteed.

This is a very buggy enemy. Sometimes they just freeze on the spot, and other ghosts ignore me and start shooting at the frozen one. The whole situation looks quite ridiculous, let me tell you.

My suggestion is that they aren't, strictly speaking, ghosts. They have material bodies, but their mutant (or paranormal) abilities allows them to mask them with this ghostly form, as well as fly and shoot energy, hence why they drop intestines when you riddle them with bullets enough. Which by the way, these things are tankier than normal Haunts.

@@АняШакал Do you think it has to do with The Blooming? If The Blooming was able to make plants and fungi sentient and powerful like in the Dome, imagine what it could do to the human brain? It could be that the brains themselves became so powerful, they just left the body, and projected the image of haunts using some telepathic/psionic powers. But then again, the scans in the Spire in Episode 1 suggest they have a physical body. Personally, I think they phase in and out of reality, and when they die, only the brain remains whereas the body disappears to some other dimension. They also teleport in Episode 2 which would connect them to how the entire sub teleported as well. I wonder if its inspired by the portal storms in Half Life 2

Find the secret in the Gap that leads to the Spire ruins. Find your way into the underground, interact with the computer and grab the encrypted data disc off it. At The Array, you can use the computer deepest into the facility (by tue red keycard) to read the disc and print out the map with A210's telemetry data. Then, when you leave the Prosperity hub, you'll have the option to head straight to Sigma or come here first.

Honestly, if this was some kind of reference to a Hentai where "road-chan" gets seduced by "car-senpai" I wouldn't be surprised at this point. <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="223">3:43</a> - I swear to fucking God I was thinking at this moment in the game "where are all the bodies? This sub is *way* too big for the scant few I've seen so far. Wait, what's behind that door that just ope- ... ... ... Oh..." This map was creepy and awesome to be sure, but I actually think the nightmare sequence and The Array's ending sections were creepier. That said, it's still like 100 times more tense and atmospheric than most "horror" games I've played. The "0/0 enemies" counter was also a nice touch even if I knew from the second I saw it that it was complete bullshit. <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="586">9:46</a> - I talked before in another comment questioning, if the US weren't the ones who teleported the sub, then who... or what... did, but another good question is, what were the Russians doing with a syringe of Titan? Did the Russians copy/steal from the US? Did the US copy/steal from the Russians? Was it not synthesized and they both found whatever it was extracted from? As for how I'm sure it's the same stuff: the music cue that plays when you take the drug is the same as the one that plays when Mojo gets dosed with Titan.

I see you too are familiar with the ACS function of spawning enemies from scratch. I checked the automap for my monster count the moment I saw the bunk door open on its own and present to me all those bodies.

There are definitely some teleportation shenanigans going on, since the Haunts at Michone teleport in as well. I believe that there is some interdimensional play afoot here. I wonder if what was codenamed The Blooming was responsible for all of the mutations: The plants and fungi at the dome, the pink mutants, the haunts, even the Scavs. Before the door full of body opens up, we can get a glimpse of a Scav that highly resembles Walker. Somehow the Scavs are related to whatever's going on, and after a while they can lose their minds, like the Laughing Toms at the plant. Walker seems to have half lost his mind, so I wonder if we will get to know some of his backstory in the next instalment. He appears to be traumatized by whatever he saw at the Spire, something no doubt related to the "background despair" and the haunts. The leather-clad Scav at Prosperity was so afraid of Walker that he self-mutilated his face so Walker would never find him...

@@metalmaxter To be specific: 1. Visit the Spire ruins and get the encrypted floppy disk 2. At the Array, in the computer deepest down the compound, insert the disc and print the map 3. When leaving Prosperity, you'll be given the option to visit this map.

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS You have to download a map from a terminal in the military bunker in the map "Disarray" where you first fight the mutant destroyers. A marker for Site A-210 should appear on the map when you open the journal. I'm not sure if you must have visited the secret map in The Gap as well.

@@pagb666 I was able to figure that out when I found it in the gap but afterwards when you get it at the sub it doesn't seem to have any purpose since you can't go back to michonne

@@psychodopefish2354 Oh... I don't recall the one at the sub. But I recall using some kind of invulnerability powerup at the final boss, so that might be it.

The one in the gap is irradiated to use so its count as a quest items and you either give it to mojo owner so he can win or give it to the doctor for 50$ This one in the submarine is an active one and its replace the invulnerability in doom expect its not white vision and your health can still be dropped to 1 and your armor can be deopped to 0 so better not use or pick any health or armor until its worn out
