I really love the mood and pacing of this track. Starts off soft and melancholic, then the heavy guitars fade in, and when the drums finally kick in, you know its time to kick ass! That back and forth between the clean guitar parts and heavy parts make for a nice contrast.
Very happy to finally get to use my Stratocaster for the audio-side of things during this cover! I really wanted to try and imitate the Clean Guitar sound from the MIDI, so the humbuckers on my Ibanez just weren't going to cut it. This was a job for some single-coil pickups! After slapping a chorus effect on to the clean parts, I managed to get the exact sound I was hearing in my head!
I've kept the structure of the song exactly the same as the original. I only added a few small new lead parts here and there. Like the parts from 0:50-1:42 and 2:17-2:34 were originally just the rhythm guitar parts. I felt compelled to try adding some things to go along with these segments. I had also threw in some choirs for some dramatic effect. I also finally got to use my tremolo/whammy bar for the first time since the RED PLANET albums! One of the new parts I really enjoyed doing was the bit from 1:59-2:17/5:42-6:00. I really liked using that hammer-on/pull-off technique to get that sort of "Schism" sound.
The fast bits were nice, but challenging for me (since I'm not really that kind of style of guitarist!). I also always totally forget how to properly play the parts once its time to get around to the video production (and always usually have to go through the slow process of relearning the parts all over again)! Since I'm running on a tight schedule of new content every 2-4 days, I've gotta cut some corners (so no guitar dance in this one!). So forgive my laziness/haste when it comes to that!
The only other little new addition were the screams from 4:24-4:32. I swear, that scream of mine has become a stock sound-effect for me now! Used it for the RED PLANET albums, the DOOM 3 cover, and for a few other things I think. I also threw in DoomGuy's death scream for 4:29-4:32 since it felt right for that build-up before everything kicks back in.
Anyhow, I enjoyed cutting together the gameplay for this video. I really like switching between the original D64 level and the D64D2 conversion. I decided to throw on a tint of green for the D64D2 level in order to imitate the lighting of the original level (plus it makes switching between the two a little more visually consistent).
Anyways, hope you all enjoy the cover! ~DAR

The switching between D64 and D64D2 is such a nice touch.

This ost sets the tone much better than the real doom 64 ost. It has so much emotion in it. It just screams "despair" when at the same time encourages you to push forward. I can't even explain how well it mixes with the thunders and the weather in the map. I think doom 64 really needed this.

Didn't know jack **** about this song before today. Watched a video about DOOM on other game engines and in that video this song played on the background. Was instantly intrigued of it, so I had to find out the song. Luckily the creator of the video put credits in the description. Still haven't heard the original, but I enjoyed this really much. Original can't be bad if your cover is this good! :)

I highly recommend playing through "Doom 64 for Doom II". Wonderful recreation of Doom 64 done in Doom 2. CoTeCiO, as well as the other contributing composers in the project gave it such an outstanding original soundtrack too! ~DAR

I wonder what this song would sound like in either up one octave or down one octave? I tested this song out with the -1 Pitch Shift, then played the song again but with the +1 Pitch Shift. Both octaves are very good but at the same time it was out of experimentation purposes and out of curiosity. I've also got to be honest... "Painful Dreams" (even in it's natural pitch shift) is an absolute masterpiece. Make no mistake about that. I even wonder if DAR would agree to my statement. Who knows? =)
@DAR-Davester2296
@DAR-Davester2296 3 года назад
Ah! I think there has been a big misunderstanding! Pitch shifting by +1 or -1 isn't an octave, but rather referred to as a "semi-tone" or "half-step". An octave is comprised of 12 semi-tones, so pitching something up or down a whole octave would be +12 or -12. If this is the case, did you also mean for "Dream Dream Eternal" to be possibly done 1 semi-tone lower? In any case, this certainly is a masterpiece, indeed. Major props to CoTeCiO for composing this beauty!

@@DAR-Davester2296 Oh, so I guess I made a mistake when we had our chat about our experiment with "Dream, Dream Eternal" within the D64D2 OST. I always say to myself whenever I make a mistake like that, "I am such a goofball." or simply, "Whoops, that wasn't supposed to happen."
@DAR-Davester2296

No problem! It certainly is fun sometimes to listen to songs pitch-shifted around (though I think this is the first time that I've listened to stuff that I've worked on!). Pitching up almost always usually imparts this nice brightness to the mood of the song. I feel like I can notice this quality especially well with Dark City. This quality I think is going to be very useful when the time comes for Dream, Dream Eternal! Painful Dreams is interesting, now that I've gone and listened to it shifted around. It really does sound cool whether it be shifted by -1/0/+1. Particularly shifting it down by 1, it just feels a tad bit darker and heavier! There really is something to be said about tuning and playing lower in order to sound more metal! Which is why things like 9-string guitars exist. For example, as silly as I think the idea of 9-strings are, this use of low tunings is what gives the new Doom soundtracks their sound. Also on the topic of lower keys/tuning, Zephyr Zone Infiltration Method sounds really great being shifted down a semi-tone! That darker quality really suits it quite well.

@@DAR-Davester2296 I did check into the previous tracks from D64D2 OST, listened to them multiple times but with different pitch shifts added in and made very specific analysis afterwards. Here's what I've got so far: "The Dark City": (+1 Pitch Shift) At the beginning, you're battling the demons while avoiding their attacks. The middle captures the feeling you're about to give up and as though your fight against them would be all for nothing. But then fate intervened and gave you more than just a reminder. Fate gave you the motivation to keep going. You stopped, looked deep inside yourself and felt something. You now realized that hope has come and gave you the power to destroy the very evil you're facing. You transform into the very hero you dreamt of being and put that power to good use. In the end you stand victorious over the foes you've decimated and then shifted your sights on completing your mission. Ready to face the impossible odds. "Zephyr Zone Infiltration Method": (-1 Pitch Shift) You're battling for survival and yet you realize that you're putting your own life on the line in an attempt to rid humanity of it's unholy, unwanted and evil inhabitants. Yet so far, in the end your luck somehow didn't run dry and you sighed out of relief but still continued forward. "Painful Dreams": (Part 1, +1 Pitch Shift) You're waging a one man war against the undead and demonic army (in droves). After each wave you feel as though you're growing stronger with each defeated foe. You take risks and somehow, your risks have surprisingly and successfully paid off. You took a moment to admire your handiwork before pressing on to the next objective. "Painful Dreams": (Part 2, -1 Pitch Shift) Same experience, different atmosphere. You hesitated and contemplated with the decisions you're making, you wonder if the risks are worth it or not. You asked yourself if you have the strength and the courage to keep going despite what kind of evil you might encounter. In the end, you feel a grim sense of satisfaction upon achieving victory... but it did come with a price in doing so.

Long ago, I was watching through a Doom 64 playthrough guide (by RU-vidr BigMacDavis: ru-vid.com/group/PLR2vpfke_UnBLqbkyxTtMw2hH82Ey8pz7&si=J2XktJzAs4FLdzGn ) trying to gauge which of these Doom 64 for Doom 2 music tracks would've been most fitting for each of the official Doom 64 maps, with the aim of arranging these music tracks in a manner similar to building an album out of them 1st (where the tracks are played in sequential order, starting with a strong intro track for the 1st music track, then toning it down in terms of intensity, then building back up to a strong finale), before then considering how they would've fit within each level's overall design theme 2nd. Personally, I had found that there were enough music tracks in the whole Doom 64 for Doom 2 soundtrack that I had felt that there wasn't any need to use any Doom 1 or 2 music tracks to fill in the blanks, instead, opting to reuse music tracks from this soundtrack for all of the Doom 64 levels (much like what had been done with Doom 1's, Doom 2's, and TNT Evilution's music tracks). ------------------------------ As for this music track, here's what I had thought about it: Though it didn't seem worthy of being a theme for the 1st level of an episode, like On The Edge, Extradimensional Beings, and Inappropriate Behavior all were, Painful Dreams is, nonetheless, a personal favorite of mine for how it seems to evoke similar feelings as those emanating from both Shawn's Got The Shotgun (which was used in 3 of Doom 2's levels) and Into Sandy's City (which was used in only one of Doom 2's levels). Personally, I could've seen this being used in 2 or 3 levels, from as early as the 5th or 6th level of the 1st episode to as late as the penultimate level of the game or last episode, just before the final boss level. ------------------------------ As for which maps I would've used this music track for, methinks it would've been these: Episode 1: MAP05: Tech Center - Although the 5th level of Doom 64 has various paths to take from the start, much like MAP08: Tricks and Traps from Doom 2, I felt that the map wasn't yet spooky enough to switch to using ambient music tracks, so I opted for a music track that's middling in terms of pacing, much like with The Dave D. Taylor Blues, which was the music track that was used for MAP08: Tircks and Traps from Doom 2. Episode 3: MAP20: Breakdown - Since this level is known for its mazes full of zombiemen, hell knights, and barons, and not much for large fights against many enemies at a time, I felt that a slower-paced yet energetic music track would've been more appropriate.

Thanks! If I remember correctly, I'm pretty sure I used a rotary speaker effect, set to a slower speed. Having a rotary going slower gives that nice shimmer to the tone. Another example of the rotary speaker sound in action would probably be Soundgarden's "Blackhole Sun". ~DAR

This is an original song by CoTeCiO, used in the "Doom 64 for Doom II (D64D2)" map-pack. I don't quite remember the name of D64's original track for this map. Aside from D64's main theme, and a couple MIDI renditions of "Blood Red Shadows", the rest of the OST is completely original. ~DAR
