They could have easily made him overly kind guy who quietly follows orders of strangers and patiently waits for them to give him what he needs. Likewise, they could have easily made him overly aggressive and ruthless, like old version of Kratos. He could've killed the people who had what he wanted. Instead they chose the totally right "golden middle" approach. Doomguy knows exactly what he needs to do. He doesn't have time or desire to explain his actions to strangers. But neither does he harm them intentionally. That's great.
