why this scene is so good is it breaks the 4th wall and give you the indirectly the answer that it was not a good idea an in the same time you can interpret what the doomslayer is thinking.
It's so insane that juxtaposition. He has the power and will to rip demons apart with his bare hands being this one man army of pure death, voilence and carnage. But if there are no demons to fight he's just a guy. He'll help his fellow humans and probably will petsit your dogs/bunny if you just ask. All his missions have been to destroy demons, but in reality it's protect humanity.
You gotta hand it to these guys. Using no words and seeing only his arms and legs they show more rage, hatred, and contempt than Kratos did over several games.
geo man this isn’t Doomguy, this is the doom slayer. An ancient being who took the path of eternal torment, with the strength of a god, super speed, and an Arsenal the size of every souther trailer park combined. he slaughtered the titan, one of the strongest demons in all of hell, with just his bare fist. He is quite literally badass incarnate
I am never a big fan of silent protagonists in FPS, in fact I hate Half-Life because of it. But DOOM 2016 proved that a silent protagonist does not equate an uninteresting one.
@@TheVandrell that's super true. While I love silent protagonists, games that utilize them dont really use them to their full potential. Maybe besides Chell in portal 2. What I get disappointed by is that it's usually text we know about the character, but the action in the animation could tell you so much more and have it be more impactful. Also someday I wanna see a silent protagonist use sign language. Itd just further cement that they either dont like speaking or cant. I dunno I found it weird when games had a character not speak but pretend that they just do? (Link from botw is a big irritation for me) its character we never get to see just because they dont talk and it's a disservice to the potential character acting that could be used to substitute the lack of dialogue. I know theres that mouse character from an indie title I cant remember atm and that was amazing but since the "silent" protagonist is usually used as a surrogate character. And while this is my personal experience from video games the whole "YOU are the protag" never really hits super home to me. I tend to enjoy thinking I'm helping the protag character with their story rather than it just be me
Just looked back at the intro after three years, and... it's incredible. In 30 seconds, without a word coming from his mouth, the Doom Slayer's personality is perfectly clear. No need for a two page long monologue, flashback, or any other narrative device. Just some trembling knuckle cracking as he looks down to a dead body on the ground, and you're fixed.
Even more so the whole intro part of the game before the elevator starts. This has been made absolutely masterful. Its like, hers a story, but we know you don't really care, so heres a fucking shotgun to shot demons in the fucking face with, kill everything that moves.
@@vegitoblue2187 Not really. The Doomslayer still shows lots of personality in Eternal, just not as much as 2016. Plus, in Eternal, he's had more time to adjust, as he's been awake for much longer.
The Doom Slayer is pure masculinity at its finest. Every problem is solved with the most direct (and violent) approach possible without even a second's worth of reconsideration.
Ah dang it. When I saw this for myself, the shotgun pump perfectly lined up with the final two notes. It was genius. Was hoping it happened in this video too.
It just sums up what anger and kicking ass is all about so well, and it makes you feel it’s so quickly. It’s extremely impressive. If there was an angry, ASMR, I think this would be it.
I actually love this characterization, because Doomguy/The Doom Slayer isn't some grey antihero or edgemonster like his fan portrayal or even first impression might make him seem to be. He's got anger issues sure, but he's pretty blatantly a champion for people, humanity as a whole. He isn't just mad because demons are fighting again, he's done that a million times. Hayden's complete disregard for the human cost, for the people who actually do the work for him and put themselves at risk is what sets him off and that's really good. I think that in such a short moment it's made clear he's a hero anyone can get behind. Looking out for those who have no one else, and fighting even when seemingly all chips are down. It's...Kinda a really cool thing to establish in one 40 second bit.
He's actually just irritated that demons got out of hell again. He doesn't care too much about anything else. If you read the codex, he was found by a manned expedition in a tomb deep inside hell guarded by many locks. He is also the only non-demon being to survive a trip to hell and back. I don't think he's human.
Like, it's how the mess started in the first place. Commanding officer ordered him to open fire on civilians, and doomguy responded by sending him to the ICU.
@@A____Glol, Doom Eternal confirms he’s the same Doom Guy from the 90s. Y’know; the same one who viciously attacked his commanding officer for ordering him to fire on innocent civilians ((that’s in the manual for the original DOOM)). Yea, Doomslayer is a hero.
I don't feel that on this scene honestly. However, I can FEEL his unyelding rage while looking at the dead body. He's like "...ARE YOU FKING KIDDING ME ?"
A quote from Freeman's Mind "People usually like being called a one man army because it sounds badass but YOU don't want to be a one man army" I most likely got something wrong in the quote but that's kind of what he said
It was when this scene happened, that most of us came to accept.... This wasn't a corpse being pulled out of the ground to get some leftover blood squeezed out for a profit. This was a full-fledged *ressurection* of a long-dormant idol. To be brought back to life, and built up stronger than ever before. This was the moment we knew.... *Doom was back, and it was here to fvcking stay.*
@TwistedGamer nah. DOOM eternal is also great. DOOM 2016 and DOOM eternal are more of a DOOM game than the original DOOM 1 and 2. The last DOOM game is going to be the next one for sure, because all of the lore is saying that the slayer will fight the creator of everything. he created davoth, is way more powerful, omnipotent layers beyond boundless, etc. or the icon of sin could be revived for the 7th time who knows
@@Grivian I mean, it's just the grenades that have cooldowns tbh, and for resources, later on your max ammo is absurdly high and there's ammo everywhere. Don't even get me started with Rich Get Richer and the Ammo Drop boost rune. You could blaze it with SSG and be fine. Eternal is like, both grenade cooldowns, the belch cooldown, frequently having to chainsaw (which is also cooldown kinda) because max ammo is alot lower and ammo is scarcer. Also meathook cooldown. I can't quite remember if there were any other cooldowns in 2016 besides grenades, but there sure as hell are alot more in Eternal. The faster pace just isn't his thing, it seems
@TwistedGamer I'm not trying to convince you, I'm asking you what you want and it doesn't seem like you know yourself. Doom 2016 was great but flawed. It became way too easy in the end. Too much ammo, the weapons were too powerful compared to the enemies. Your health, weapons and tools made sure that you could annihilate any room without difficulty. The amazing and challenging second third of the game is hard to balance sure, but that is what they were aiming for in Eternal. You counter the low ammo in Eternal by changing weapons, using grenades (I bet you never used them in 2016), using mastered full auto, blood punch, targeting weak points. If you are really bothered by the fact that you are using the chainsaw too much then you should try new tactics, or reducing the difficulty which is why I brought that up. Using the chainsaw is much more rare than you think if you just use your equipment intelligently. It is used more than 2016 sure, but there the chainsaw was basically pointless. I can't understand why people would prefer pointless things in games. Glory kills are the same as in 2016 so the only thing remaining is the flame belch. I don't believe that being the source of your distaste so what I take from your comment is that you are mad that you can't spam the super shotgun for the entire game. Resource management is important in every fps, but in most of them it is far less relevant that it should be. You almost never run out of ammo unless you play really badly. The original doom could be quite punishing if you wasted ammo, where you had to look for extra ammo outside of combat. The chainsaw has a cooldown so you can't softlock the game, but fuel is still scattered across the map. The grenades could have ammo but that would lead to more resource management. Comparing Doom Eternal to a repetitive hero based rpg is just madness.
You have to hand it to Id software. The start of this game (as the rest of the whole game) is insane and extremely well done. You awake and get taught all the basics in about 5 minutes, then it tesers the story, telling you "fuck that we are here to slay demons" and introduces all main characters and roughly how they are aligned and what their goals are. then you get a really nice introduction to and personalisation of the main character without him ever saying a single word. All in the span of about 10-15 minutes. Holy fuck.
This is so fucking cool, 10/10. It features more character development than almost any modern movies and doom guy doesn’t even have to say a word, like damn, what a fucking badass lmao
The cracking of the knuckles, the twitch in DOOM guy, the lack of care for the scientist. DOOM Guy doesn't give a damn about what happened. All he knows is one thing. Kill. Every. Last. Demon. Complete with the music, this scene is perfect. I remember a DYKG video on DOOM where one of the directors said along the lines of "If you're playing DOOM, you don't give a damn about story. You're there to do one thing and one thing only. Kill demons" DOOM 2016 did that perfectly. DOOM Eternal is going to be just as, if not better.
And they say games make people angry. No. This game actually helps us letting out all the rage in a virtual world to prevent getting sick in real life. This is the perfect opposite. After slaying hundreds of demons, all you feel is peace, and satisfaction.
When this game first came out and people were expecting it to be trash based on the lack of the review copies and shitty multiplayer beta, this scene single-handedly shut up every single doubter in a fucking heartbeat.
This is why we love doom guy He’s not into that anime style 3 hour conversation of who is and isn’t justified Doom slayer knows just as well as we(the players)know that Samuels is completely full of crap and just smashes the audio transmitter in the most bada$$ way possible
Seriously, only 47 seconds long and probably one of the best game intros I have seen. The way the E1M1 music builds up and at the end with the shotgun reload straight up the music ends. It’s brilliant!
“Story in video games is like story in a porn movie, they’re expected to be there, but they’re not that important.” - John Carmack, the creator of the first DOOM game
Even though this was the beginning, I knew after the title popped up and the slayer loaded his shotgun, this was going to be an amazing game.. And it was!
After 5 years of this amazing game being released, this is still one of the best intros in gaming history. It makes you feel what the doomslayer is feeling. Pure anger and hatred towards demons. I remember the first time I saw this and I felt like killing every demon I saw. Best intro of 2016 hands down.
I'm willing to take full responsibility for the horrible events of the last 24 hours, but you must understand: our interest in their world was purely for the betterment of mankind. Everything has clearly gotten out of hand now, yes, but it was worth the risk, I assure you.
I already played the game, i watched this video a thousand times yet i can't help but hype myself and smile like an idiot when the Slayer punches the screen. It's just so fucking good.
What a great build up, musically, to the title. To be able to accomplish something so visceral in music in much less than a minute... it is stunning. Chills every time
That shotgun sound make my body feel whole anger of 10'000 years. I went in shooting range and asked to switch on that soundtrack. That feeling, when i pump it was...
The opening of that game was one of the best of any games ever. It just immediately caught you and put you into the mood. Doom Eternal is a big step backwards in that regard.
i was playing on a laggy computer, and i thought that "chuck-chuck" of his rifle is supposed to be synchronised with the last "tu-dun" in music. such a missed opportunity
Activision on a screen: “I’m willing to take full responsibility for the terrible journey since 2005. But you must understand-“ Bethesda stares angrily Activision: “-our interest in this series was purely for the benefit of the fans, without the controversy. Things clearly did not turn out like we hoped. But it was worth the risk, I assure you. Once we tone down the demons and introduce microtransactions, they will come to appreciate-“ Bethesda slams fist into the screen and grabs the Doom rights before walking out, never looking back.
+Zack Yeah, looking back now with how things went with Bethesda now-a-days it would have been better to go that route. I was just putting the whole scope of what happened with Doom between 2005 to 2016 into perspective of what it meant for us gamers. Really hope Eternal is good, if not better.
Now this. This is how ALL game intros should be. None of that “bla-bla-bla made with unity bla-bla-bla unneeded information”. We just need angry dudes punching voice boxes and the intro, with heavy metal of course.
“I’m willing to take full responsibility for the horrible events of the last 24 hours but you must understand, our interest in the world was purely for the betterment of mankind. Everything has clearly gotten out of hand. Yes, but it was worth the risk. I assure you.”
