Deemed impossible to beat in one segment; the infamous slaughter-map of Okuplok is analyzed in this series. This tutorial explains several survival strategies for the third fight: the Arch-Vile Cave.
Okuplok is considered by many as the most difficult doom map ever created (even though the verdict on that is still up to debate). The map is heavily criticized for it's wildly varying levels of difficulty between each fight, together with a major health and armor starvation. This makes it extremely frustrating as a challenge, especially when you die to a difficult fight, after having cleared several easy (and borderline boring) fights for 3 hours. Some consider that the only reason why no one has single-segmented Okuplok on UV yet, is because no one even wants to try. I wouldn't be surprised.
Regardless of the criticism, Okuplok is popular, and many players struggle with several of it's difficult fights. This video's purpose is to help those players with guidelines, strategies, statistics, and other useful tips. I did a thorough research of the known strategies for these fights, but in case I missed something: feel free to give your feedback in the comment section below. Any new information can help everyone else who's struggling!

Well I'm going to guess that East Side is most survivable. It seemed to provide the most control over how many Archies come out since you can see them coming. West Side looked more challenging, you hang out too long because nobody's shown up yet and then 4 or 5 show up. And Reckless is going to be a whole lot of luck based on how the Archies decide to move, plus once you run into the west cave for cover, if many Archies are still alive and free, you will get overrun and killed because there's nowhere further to hide. Edit below the fold for spoilers: whooooo I got one right!!! 🥳🥳 Well at least I got it right answer wise. Now to keep watching and see if my reason was correct. EDIT 2: Ah so I was right about Reckless, but I didn't consider the surprise Mancubus during the West strategy

There is, of course, the ‘Chaos’ method: Don’t kill any of them until after you kill the Archviles. That will prevent them from reviving the monsters

The one in the first castle (with the mancubus walls, revenants, cyberdemons and archvile towers) was great. Instead of crossing the linedef that closes the door, you can just take the teleporter, wake everything up and run back out to safety. It's easy to replicate as well, unlike the movement needed for the revenant corridor.

I'm doing mostly Reckless before going into the East Corner for one simple reason: Bottlenecking and splash damage. First, Arch-viles are fast mofos, so any extra splash damage I can inflict is worthwhile, especially since the variance on Mr. Cyberdemon vs the Mancubi has been rather unkind to me and I end up using more rockets than I'd like on cleanup. The second reason is that the splash damage component of the rocket launcher is the most consistent part vs tightly packed enemies, and the archies start really close together. Nailing half of them with ~80 to 30 extra damage per rocket at the start improves the hiding strategy immensely such that they die in 2 rockets (or 35 cells) per archie instead of 3. So i play it a little more dangerous than shown here at the prefired rockets step by backstepping a little more to give myself more distance and time to get those initial rockets in and using one of the pillars on the right to break LOS briefly before ducking into the east corner. It's very risky because the timing to break LoS is much shorter and it needs to be timed correctly to prevent an early breakout that cuts me off, but because the front archies are the first to see me, they are nearly always the first to stop and start channeling their blast at me as soon as I enter their range (which is basically the whole room from the back anyway), this keeps all the others penned in to absorb that extra rocket damage and prevent them from swarming out when I step to the right around the 3rd pillar. If I'm especially lucky, the rocket AoE will make the front archies flinch, keeping them immobilized just that extra moment longer. However, I would never recommend relying on that since the Arch-Vile flinch rate is only ~4%.

That's a nice strategy. Definitely faster and more ammo efficient than the east strategy I presented. In this series I'm solely focusing on finding the highest survivability% of each fight, but if you have a save-game close by and are willing to take extra risks, strategies like this one may end up being the best for you, especially if you want to spice things up a notch! :)

@@coincident Agreed on all of it, and especially coming from the only person to do a non-TAS single segment run of Okuplok! I am using segmented runs to play through Okuplok because it is as much a puzzle as it is action (to a point anyway). Though I am retaining whatever ammo/damage between major fights to see where I will need to improve or change my strategy. In any case, these videos are fantastic and I hope to see more down the line.

I usually run past the prison back out to the imp cliff for easier cover (provided the revenants below are gone). The archviles get to resurrect a lot, but it's easy to just spam rockets and retreat. No idea if it's statistically preferrable to the other strategies, and I guess there's the added risk of being zapped backwards into the lava.

I think it's a worse East side strategy. Just because you face more total monsters which at worse is an ammo cost. I think survivability is worse just because all the same monster is the same threat. Variety is a problem

My original intention with this fight was to center the cyberdemon In front of the arch vile trap, get him to shoot at me while I duck into his alcove, thus hitting the arch viles in the process. I even hit him with a rocket to keep his aggro, but alas he gets distracted by the barons and mancubi, leaving me to deal with 16 angry arch viles. At least they had to work their way around the other monsters. Naturally I'll be stuck without rockets at this point so I rush the mancubus cliff and attempt to push them back to where they won't be a problem (mostly to stack myself on rockets again), as I still have the revenants and imps to deal with. The revenants down by the red door are slowly infighting with the mancubi on the cliff, hince my momentary pause while firing my first three rockets. I noticed that they were all dead from watching azuruish's run when he got to the red door. But that's a story for another day. Keep the strategy guide coming.

I am loving these strategy guide videos. This map has fascinated me for years. For a long time, I couldn't even run it with GZDoom because my PC would basically grind to a halt during the opening mancubus bombardment.

Something I thought about, people need to be careful when they look at speedruns for strategies. If for example this fight was part of a 3 minute map, the only viable strategy to get a competitiv time would be to go reckless, but because its part of such a long map a safer strategy is used. Speedruns put time above all and specially short runs often use really aggressive strategies that are not what should be done in casual play. Also I wonder if running all the way close to the imps area would be viable, they shouldnt run into too many barons and there's plenty of space to shoot them before they come even if they do in a group.

True. That's why I'm focusing on survivability on these videos, and not on speed (the opposite of most speedrun strats). Yeah someone else also suggested using the Imp staircase for cover. Honestly I don't "feel" that it's more survivable than the East strat, but I didn't run any numbers for that scenario, so I can't tell for sure. Might be worth a few tests.

Loving these videos so far. I would love to see more in the way of backup strategies for when things go wrong. If you get overwhelmed on the east side is it possible to run back to the imp cliff and take on the viles from there?

I'm not sure, you're welcome to try and experiment yourself; in the end that's the only proven way of getting good data for yourself. From my tests, I personally feel that it doesn't work, because running back means you expose yourself more. Maybe if you hide in the teleporter closet? I'm really not sure about all this.

I had a go and it wasn't too bad - got zapped about half the time making a run for the imp cliff, sometimes even off the edge, but if I reloaded those saves and tried fighting them head on I got overwhelmed and died 80-90% of the time. Just curious how you'll approach backup strats in later vids, since this map is so long and no strategy has had a 100% success rate so far lol Specifically what happens is the archviles get collected into the baron closet along with a couple of arachnotrons, and they're too pre-occupied with resurrecting imps to bother chasing you out onto the cliff. Was very consistent after a bit of practice. But of course that's only if you get the worst case scenario in the first place, which is 20 viles coming out of their closet and into the east wing

What about using the West Side with the super shotgun? Wouldn't matter so much about the ammo then. Wouldn't have to be so careful with the walls as well.

(Disclaimer: I haven't actually played okupluk, and I am just guessing with reasoning in this comment) I think that the issue with that strategy is that you would have to move south to get good damage with the SSG. If you do move south, more Arch-viles will come, overwhelming you. If you stay far enough north to prevent that, you won't deal enough damage to the Arch-vile you're facing before it corners you.

I understand that Okuplok is a really huge slaughter map. I've seen someone clear it in just over 2 hours, and I've seen the 4.5 hour long co-op stream done by Spectre and Vytaaan. So...when are we going to get the next strategy video? About the cliffs full of Mancubi, followed by the horde of Cacodemons?

I still don't think I'm ready for Okuplok but this guide makes me wonder... would these strats let me beat Okuplok WITH mid-fight saves (because that's how I generally enjoy playing Doom). Maybe, just maybe... someone like me can savescum their way through Okuplok with these strats.

I think with more modern Source ports, it's not so bad to save mid fight. I know in OG doom, monsters went back to sleep when you load a save

East side is the safest, i suppose, but my personal choice is reckless (even though arch-viles without -fast are unpredictable with their casts)

My strategy guide: Load this map with Russian Overkill mod, pick up meteor cannon, 1 shot in the middle and all archviles gone in 1 shot. Games have to be fun and relaxing, not toiling.

@@Wus83 Last I heard of it, he Gave up in trying to single segment Okuplok, But he did still manage a double segment (one save file), so I think he will continue on the area by area guides, but definitely after a break...
