Actually it would be the best thing in gaming history (for me at least) if they somehow managed to tweak Quake 1's story to fit with 2 and 4 and did a reboot trilogy in that order 🤤
@@DrakathSagittarius Arguably Quake 1 already fits with Quake 2. Q1 is about dimension hopping, there's even Strogg crates in certain areas. Granted they blatantly just reused a Q1 asset for the Strogg symbol but it's neat nod none the less.
The protagonist and Steam artwork banner are downright hideous for this game. I loved the combat though, I just wish the aesthetic was a bit more inspired.
I like that there was a clash of steampunk and medieval architecture in this first episode. Maybe while paying homage to quake we get some of that tasty grungy sci fi into eldritch nightmare stuff we all remember quake 1 for.
If the artstyle becomes more cohesive and atmospheric, less fullbright and flat making better use of those dynamic lights (think FEAR), then I'll jump on this. But for the moment, I have too many retro FPS games doing the same thing, being almost literal Doom or Quake clones, the first few I liked, but I've started to be drawn towards the ones who are taking inspirations from later FPS games like FEAR, or Halo, with a bit more mechanics than just jump, run, gun, but with more enemy AI variety and a few more mechanics, no ADS, but just stuff we've seen in FEAR, Halo, Doom 2016, quick melee, quick grenades, possibly dashing and double jumping and better environmental interactions, more interactions with enemies (Selaco, Hedon, Trepang2, Sprawl, Turbo Overkill, Elderborn, Fallen Aces etc -- Been loving Slayer's Testaments, Quake mod combining Doom 2016 & Eternal and doing its own thing, a lot of well made maps to boot)
Superb delivery and engaging thoughts, subbed. I also agree to some extent about the visual aesthetic, I don't mind it; it's somewhat interesting/different but the abundance of plastic, smooth looking game worlds is quite a common thing, it seems. As for the fiend-like enemies, that's immediately what sprung to mind when I saw them (those things had a nasty claw attack in the original game but an even worse jumping one. If the first hit didn't kill you the second one would!) :)
the thing I don't like about the artstyle is that everything looks like it's plastic, which makes the whole setting look like you are in a lego world fighting action figures with toy guns
Seems fun, but the idea of Serious Sam numbers of enemies kinda puts me off. I hope they don't go full out on that. Visually the game could be fine, it seems to be aiming for an early 2000s style, but it looks washed out, and the lighting and textures are too flat. If it were up to me, I'd add some detail to the textures and go for a moodier lighting.
Having not played it, but going off your review, the name, and design aspects, here's what I'm getting from Doombringer: it's more akin to a Doom knockoff, than a fully fledged, retro fps inspired by Doom and the like. Sort of like those Doom knockoffs for mobile? I can see that the devs have a ton of experience understanding the genre and what makes it tick, but it looks like they're taking the basics of Doom/Quake, giving it their own visual style, and making huge maps. Not to say it won't shape up to be a great one, after all, I've not even played it compared to you Kirk, but I admire your honest and kind reviews. Very rarely does an Early Access game intrigue me enough to invest before full release, but I'll keep my eye on Doombringer, you've certainly made me think better about it than I had. Fantastic video!
It's funny how dusk used unity to present a refined quake with a wider color pallet , but this somehow churned out an off-putting unity school project aesthetic using an actual modernized quake engine.
@@thriller2910 Hmm.. It is not that much slower, unless you play with a controller. With strafe jumping and rocket jumping possible to move crazy fast. Yeah, less enemies overall.
@@noop9k Yeah, I made the mistake of going into it blind, so I didn't know how to strafe jump, and also forgot to turn on always run, so my initial experience was very slow. Still, a damn good game.
Tbh it looks a bit like a warhammer 40k game on my perspective . The pistol alone has that WH40k design mixed with judge dredd . But there is one thing that should be tried. A boomer shooter in the mutant chronicles world or sort of . Im all in for bashing mutants with guns while having a badass armor with freaking awesome shoulderpads tacked on !!
Oh snap no idea this existed! Thanks for sharing it, I cant wait to rip and tea-...Kick a$$ and chew bubbl-wait....reign beneat.....okay what is it we do in this game?
for what i could see on the video, yeah the kinda steampunk opaque desaturated visuals are a bit confusing, sometimes it reminds me of Quake but sometimes more like serious sam without the metallic textures, but i apreciate the effort since i'm getting a bit worried all throwback fps now is going for either hellish demonic vibe or a medieval dark magic setting while dual wielding low poly guns
@@KIRKCOLLECTS Your experience mirrored mine. That first level needs some work. I embarrassed myself streaming with some co-workers. The resounding "Git Gud" was enough to drive one mad. lol. Great video, been looking forward to this one for a while.
Hey Kirk, first of all - great job and great video, as always! And I really appreciate you giving attention to all these osbcure but dedicated games. I also have a question regarding the Conclusion part of the video - what is the music track that is used there? It sounds really kick-ass and I would really love to have it on my player!
I thought this was just one of those retro arena fps that was going to be dead on arrival but the Serious Sam counts combined with the fast movement and tight maps seems a pretty cool idea. But the visuals look really ugly, it's like it almost wants to be a mod for TF2 but somehow the colors are muted.
Oddly enough that muted look and incoherent visual style reminds a lot of Unreal Tournament 2003 / 2004. Not sure if that is purposeful or coincidental.
I haven't even played the game yet, but an odd dichotomy of visual & design elements that sometimes interact perfectly but at other times seem to be combined at random? THAT'S Quake 1 style to a tee!
Great vid I was just looking this game on steam and wondering whether I should pick it up. How do you feel about the next two episodes of the campaign? it sounds like maybe they were running out of ideas at the end of the first episode?
Okay, so after playing this, the art style definitely doesn't look like much but the game design itself is genuinely top notch, and the Quake 3 thing isn't just semantics. It genuinely plays like Quake 3, down to the movement and weapon selection, and feels like what it would have been like if it ever got a campaign.
Would you recommend buying this or Hrot first? It will be a while before I buy either I imagine, and I'll eventually end up with both, but I was just curious on anyone's opinions as these games have a similar level of interest for me.
I commented already on this, but Doombringer, in name alone, looks more like Quake/Doom maps in a knockoff game. I'm sure it'll prove it's got what it takes to stand out more among the flood of retro fps games we've gotten in the last few years, but personally I'm more intrigued by Hrot. Call me a hypocrite, but Hrot does look to me like a more original twist on Quake. It's got the sort of USSR bleakness + Post Apocalyptic + Quake aesthetics down in a way that has tempted me to decide that I'm going to invest the moment I can set aside some money for it. I'm not an Early Access person, but Hrot definitely looks like one creepy, miserable treat. A little horror, a little Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl, and a lot of Quake. Like Kirk says, Doombringer knows where it comes from and what it's doing for sure, but is a little lackluster in design and concept if you ask me. Hrot knows what world it wants to show you. Doombringer seems a little confused as to what it wants to be (in terms of design/concept). Take this from a guy who's not played Doombringer, but has enjoyed the Hrot demo. Keep your eye on both I say. It's up to you.
@@keanmccracken7638 just wait for the summer sale. That should be by the end of the month. That's probably when I'll buy it. If you're interested in other shooters like these two, check out Realm's Deep on RU-vid, or check out my wishlist on Steam. I have pretty much searched the internet for everything I could find that is in the retro fps genre (I also have a good number in my library). Just search Player 10 on Steam if you're interested, I recommend pretty much everything there
@@Player-10 yeah, I've searched as much as I can for any retro-styled shooters as well. BTW, (sorry for bothering you), but have you happened to try the game paradox vector yet, and if so what do you think of it? No big reviewers have covered it and hardly any steam reviews, but it looks kind of interesting to me.
@@keanmccracken7638 I'll be honest, surprisingly I'd not seen that one! It looks like a polished gem to be sure. I like the look of it, and what little of the gameplay, enemies, and level design I've seen looks pretty good. It was apparently part of Realm's Deep, so I must have missed it, yet it looks familiar... Guess I should rewatch it just to see if I've missed anything else.
I like the speed and gunplay, but I am not a fan of the art style. It occupies a weird no-man's-land between steampunk, Quake, and 60's spy-fiction, while also managing to occasionally look like an asset flip. I'll probably give it a try when it releases, but it's not super high on my boomer shooter list.
Not a fan of the art style, I'm more for warmer environments, like quake 1 or graven, but the gameplay looks fun. Good stuff. If this thing has decent bots, it should be great to populate the server when low on real players. Hope it has LAN support... it HAS to support it, c'mon, it's freakin' darkplaces.
The Quake you want is Quake Live bro, come join us! :) btw looks slick af, hope the levels design is good and that it lasts a good 20 hours with workshop support and MOST IMPORTANT COOP!
Funny how classic fps fans always let their aversion to change show, Quake 3 exists and it's one of the best shooters ever made but some average fan made game is supposed to be follow up we never got just because it tries to imitate everything the original games already did. In reality this is just more "the fanmade quake 2" we never got.
@@Daknightfury prodeus ,wrath aeon of ruin, dusk (not early access), ion fury, etc. All great games but once you play one you've played them all at this point.
Cheats like god mode and all weapons would be nice and helpful to enjoy the game more. If anyone is aware of any cheat codes for DoomBringer, please post them. I would like them ! :)
I do not get the feeling of Quake while watching this. The art style is not in the vain of Quake. Quake was much darker, gothic, this is much more colorful. Shooting feels different too, weaker, less gore too, overall not very interesting to me.
The aesthetic looks nothing like Quake, and kind of all over the place, while still retaining that weird, unfinished look that amateur titles often have. Pass.
