Think back to ep. 4 ' Fear Itself' when Buffy said maybe it's better not to let anyone in, that's key to her mentality. With Angel she turned him into Angelis and Parker just used her.

Great reactions today, D! Always love this ep as we get the reveal that Spike can hurt a demon, and for now finds a purpose to "enjoy" himself.... (besides getting into Xander and Willow's heads about being needed), and the big reveal to Buffy of the Commandos and their mission..... and the classic, "No, just a friend of Xander's here" will always be classic..... great stuff and you get 2 CTU's from me today.... keep em coming!

The age 25 thing isn't something specific age-wise. It's just a random low age. And since Buffy is now 18, and has died once, this is something she worries about.

My issue with Riley here was that Buffy said no. She unambiguously and emphatically said no...more than once. Even back then, no means no. You back off. My rah-rah for Riley took a big dip with that. He needs to look inside, embrace his inner Zeppo, and be a friend first. A friend with intent, sure, but the woman said no.

EDITED BECAUSE I ADDED SPOILERS I tried to say this in my own comment once, and a threaded comment nearly took my head off. Although for me him saying she's "stupid" and "self-involved" doesn't help other people's defense of he's just trying to convince her. If he wants to convince her, that was far from a great way of doing so. She had valid reasons to not get involved and he acted like it didn't matter before later being upset once _Into the Woods_ comes along. In a year and a half he doesn't have great defenses after she lays out in this episode the relationship would be hard because of slaying and previous relationships. At that point he's realizing Buffy's points that she cannot love him and he's giving ultimatums when the relationship already imploded.

@LOSFOUFOUP Год назад
I mean if you tell someone to stop drugs and they say no more than once, that's not a reason to stop trying to convince them to stop... She clearly likes him and wants to be with him, but she's so afraid it'll end up hurting she doesn't want to take any risk. Except that if you think that way you never live anything to begin with. Calling her out on her bullshit was the right call here. Also "no means no" is a stupid social media argument. Reality is way more complex than that. If you ask a girl if her boyfriend is beating her up and she says no despite two black eyes and a broken rib, you don't just back off because she says no. You try to convince her to let you help her do something to stop it, despite her fear. Feelings and intentions matter more than words. No and yes both mean "read the room". Because sometimes people say yes or no because they're afraid, and while they might mean it that doesn't mean it's better for them. Sometimes people need a benevolent push to make the right decision for them despite being afraid of doing so. Riley read the room : he's pretty sure Buffy wants to be with him. She's just cockblocking them both because she's afraid it'll end up badly. Which, like I said, you never live anything good in your life if you think like this to begin with. Anywho, I don't see that debate having any winner. In the context of the show and of the scene, I think Riley was right to call Buffy out on her bullshit. But people's tendancies to generalize will of course generate pointless arguments like this. Thanks for the thought anyway. Ps : being a zeppo only works out for Xander.

@@LOSFOUFOUP the drug analogy...at some point you have to because as the saying goes you can only help those who want to help themselves. yes you can try and convince people but it's not your life and it's also not up to you, sometimes continuing to push will drive people away. Whether Buffy likes him or not is irrelevant, at that point she made her decision. He should have walked away and let her figure it out. There is a fine line between helping someone and interfering. Buffy's whole life is a risk and she does cut herself off, but saying yes to everything is just as big of a risk as saying no to everything.
@LOSFOUFOUP
@LOSFOUFOUP Год назад
@@paulinerobertson6836 I mean sure there's a limit to everything, but for that scene particularly Riley haven't pushed the boundaries. He just tried to make her understand that the reason she's pushing him away is stupid, and that by doing that she's just hurting them both. And when he failed to do that he DID walk away and let her figure it out. He didn't tell her what she should do, he just told her the truth : her reasons are stupid. He wasn't forceful nor creepy about it, he was just honest about what he wants. Some people seems to think he should just go "k, peace out then." and be done with Buffy without trying to understand or convince her that this is a mistake. I understand why Buffy says no, but her reasonning IS stupid. Riley is fighting demons and taking risks anyway, and every relationship can potentially end up badly. So Riley was right to call her out, that's it. Some people just won't try anything or give up way too quick, and then they'd think they're good persons just because they didn't take any risks and therefore had no impact on anyone and anything. Meanwhile, bad people act because they don't care about the risks of hurting others. Eh, whatever. I'm making the mistake of trying to philosophize on YT again. Fuck that, I made my piece and I'm not Riley. Peace out.

"Slayers don't live past 25" - that's not a hard line, it's just that as far as the Watchers Council have records of, no Slayers has survived to turn 26. Slayers don't have an off-switch - they just have a really dangerous existence - and that is in part the Watchers Council's own doing. Let's see: A) They insist on Slayers working alone and keeping the secret. No teams, no backup other than their assigned Watcher. Given that SOME humans clearly know about vampires, would it really be so terrible to let a Slayer lead a team of hunters? B) They administer a cruel "face a nasty vampire without your powers" test on the Slayer's 18th birthday. A Slayer reaching their full prime and independence, possibly becoming harder to control - it's almost like they murder the Slayer undeepr the guise of a test so the mojo will activate a new Slayer for them to mold. One good reason no Slayer has made it to 26 is that most die on their 18th birthday... C) Buffy is a Slayer - but due to weirdness, she is no longer the only one nor the most recent one, though Faith being comatose does leave her doing the job... Buffy has a team, so she's aleady got a big advantage over earlier Slayers. Buffy DID die even before the stupid test - she died at 16, so technically she didn't make it to her 25th birthday without dying - luckily, she died from drowning and was resuscitated with CPR. And later she survived the test, partly because Giles broke the rules too. A new Slayer was activated and everything! Kendra was activated, and then after Kendra died, Faith was activated - seems like the mojo is working normally on the line of Slayers after Buffy died. Buffy seems to be an anomaly - she died, but it got better, and she kept her Slayer powers depite someone else getting the powers too. So - just because no Slayer has lived past 25 previously doesn't mean Buffy won't - even if it were a rule, it no longer applies to her, she's broken all the rules...

The specific line is "the Slayer rarely survives past her middle 20s", as Giles said to Jenny in a cut scene from "Surprise". But "rarely" doesn't mean "never". Buffy's right to be concerned, but shouldn't be completely fatalistic.

Doomed was a great fun episode with the comedy between Spike and Xander hilarious. It's almost like the 'Odd Couple' the two of them in the basement is a sitcom I would pay to watch. The last part when Spike gets recognised by Riley and tries to put on an American accent was hilarious.

So James Marsters is ACTUALLY American, but there were stories around that time about how people would hear him using his regular accent instead of his Spike accent and people would wonder why he was doing such a terrible American accent instead of his natural British accent. Just to be clear his American accent in this episode is NOT his American accent.

I don't think I can call it the "best". Buffy lies to her friends for no reason, the dubbing of that Buffy/Giles scene is awful, the physics in the climax are ridiculous, and I'm not fond of Marti Noxon dropping in cheap sex jokes ("You see me with my clothes off"/"Every inch of me is tingling") in otherwise strong Buffy/Riley scenes. All that costs it a few points, IMO. But it's probably my favorite of the season. That Buffy/Willow scene at the party is everything I adore: vulnerable Willow, caring and comforting Buffy, and two excellent comedy riffs. David Fury was at the top of his game there. (And so is SMG. That little sigh she gives as Buffy stands up…remember, it hasn't even been a DAY since "Hush". She's just emotionally worn out at this point.) I actually think it would be better to stake Spike (how many people has he killed? who knows how long the chip will last? And it's doubtful he'll reform), but they do set up a decent excuse for keeping him around and the comedy with him here really works. Props to Jane Espenson for those scenes. Not bad for an episode thrown together by three writers over a weekend because "Hush" had them behind the schedule. JMO.

Despite trying to be a jackass I think Spike made some pretty valid points I used to also think that Buffy was too much of a softie to cut them loose they may think their lives are better for it but I think in some ways it's worse I mean they've all lost too much seen too much death, loss, Carnage Florida City not for Buffy they all would have been dead 10 times over and if she had never come to Sunnydale The Master would have eventually gotten free took over the world and killed everybody
