Door restoration. Adding Height to this Old Pine Door.

Thank you for joining me on this one, A similar video to the external door repair video here - • Rotten Door, Full Repa...
I am splicing the Stiles of this door and adding height to both Stiles and the bottom rail. Not as quick as screwing a piece of pine to the door bottom but a much better and correct way to do such a repair. While it may seem a costly thing to do, finding another matching door the right size would take an awful lot more time!

Thanks for another great lesson. Also, thanks for introducing me to PU glue in gun form. I've used bottles of PU before, but there are so many advantages to using it with a gun. I didn't even know it existed in that form until you showed us. Keep up the great videos.

Thankyou Ian, yes "what glue is that" seems to be a common question. I didn't realise it wasn't so well known, and now it's mentioned most seem to use the bottled version which is just the devil's own juice...

Thank you for taking the time with that undersized door . Most people would have chucked it . You properly restored it for many more years of use . It may look like an average pine door but is forever " The Bradshaw door ".

I built three of these doors for my old house. When we sold it to flippers we asked it they would use them or throw them away. They let us take them rather than throw them away. I hope that someday someone takes as much care for my doors as you have for this one.

Great work as usual giving a new lease of life to a classic old panelled pine door u give us lots of tips so it seems fair to reciprocate. To help blend the colourisation of the new pine to the old u can use of all things a tea bag ( I’ve done it many times ) not a soaking wet one a damp one will do it might raise the grain slightly but u can sand it back and u really do have control over the tone with a humble old tea bag not to mention the cuppa whilst working or of course there is the alternative u could call in a french polisher but then the expense creeps up

I love it he owns a track saw usescit, radial arm saw uses it, really nice panel saw and uses it. Do you know how many shops don't use the panel saw anymore or refuse to use a radial arm saw in the USA. Id use all of them tools and a cnc mill if I had it. You've got a nice shop and looks like doors are your thing. Becuse you've got the tools do make short work of it and do a really good job.

For the rail, I think I would have used a dovetail router bit, and set both the interior and top of the edges of both patches to the 14-degree of the router bit. It wouldn’t have occurred to me to do like you did. But it really shouldn’t make a different strength or appearance wise. To widen the style I probably would have made a groove in the bottom of the existing and added a spline. But, again it shouldn’t make much difference in the end. Just a difference of method.
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 2 года назад
Yeah could do! I'm cautious of old doors and nails so don't use your best router bit. The problem with dovetail bits is you have to guarantee the height of the router doesn't alter when cutting so easy to get a wobble in the edge. The best way is with the track saw set to the depth then finish with the multitool 👍

Thanks for sharing this very interesting little project. Excellent work and very clever use of the multitool. Just a quick question regarding the blade you use in the plunge saw to perform the rip cut. I've been using thin kerf 24tpi blades, but have found they just don't last very long, tend to wander, and can leave significant burn marks, especially on hardwood doors. Any advice would be appreciated.
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 2 года назад
Tricky one, but the problem namely lies in the blade quality. Rip cutting wants to be alternate bevel with a positive rake, in a 160mm blade 24 teeth is about right but like you I've always found the 24t blades "tinny" to the ear and struggle to get a nice cut. Id try a higher tooth ATB with a thicker plate if you can find it. My HK 85 rips beautifully with a 2.4mm plate blade. Thick blade and plenty of power will solve your issues but most small track saws aren't capable of it unfortunately. They are designed as panel saws with triple chip blades..

@@BradshawJoinery Thanks for getting back to me! I was using the 36v Makita, but went back to using the 110v corded one. I've got several tracks, and have one set dedicated to the cordless, and the other to the corded. Yes, I'll definitely be avoiding the thin kerf blades going forward. 👍

You arse... I can't fit a single CC in my shop and you've got two! Out interest, how much room behind does the arm stick out? Love the video buddy. And a great tip on the starlock - the bosch ones from Screfix are about over a tenner! M.

Could you do similar process if you needed to add to the width? Ex. an interior barn door design

Yeah, adding width is easy as it's a straight join allt the way with the grain of the Stiles

Hi, I've added the links In the description. Wood weld is probably your best bet but the adhesive is called Polyurethane

Yeah I did, use a 2mm packer to one side of the door and EST planer to cut just under 2mm👍

Just watched the shipping container episode. What was it for? Just storage?
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 2 года назад
It's to store timber about to be used and completed jobs in an acclimated environment before installation. It's made a massive difference to the quality of my finished work after installation I get absolutely minimal movement from the timber.

About £6k I think, £2150 for container, same for insulation then some electrics and the OSB/battens. Would be alot more now 🤣

I loved this. I am in the States and often travel in the UK. You DO have many shorter doors there. As it happens, a prior owner shortened 8 doors here at my house of comparable vintage. A shame, but I need to correct now that her carpet has been removed. This has been very helpful . Great job, sir!.

A Normal door is 1981mm but many older houses have been reworked etc and doors get trimmed down... very old cottages the doors are really low!

Got to ask, why didn’t you just shorten the styles a little more and then replace the bottom rail in its entirety?

Having some remaining joint leaves strength in the original door and I don't have to worry about panel grooves etc, I also didn't need wide timber for this repair and s full bottom rail in old pine is hard to find. So in short, it's less work this way, stronger and the materials were available 👍

Hi, I have an old door 32 inch x 80 inch) that I want to use in a 36 inch x 81 inch opening. I need to add material to its width and height. I was hoping to poly it to show off the wood rather than painting it to cover the patch. How can I do it so the door looks good after I apply the poly?
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 8 месяцев назад
try to keep the grain in the same orientation as it is. i.e dont add a batten on the bottom under the end grain. adding 4" to the width is alot! it may look bulky on the stiles

@@koolaid11289 it will work but may look a little DIY! Mitres will be tricky to make work when fitting the door too. I would keep the Stiles one full length top to bottom whatever you do
