I just finished going thru this dilemma on the first 4 of 28 interior doors i'm commissioned to built. That is 40 mortises on just 4 doors! Having to go back in with a mortising chisel by hand to clean out the bottoms has been time consuming and a royal pain to say the least. From milling the lumber/timber from rough to this stage of a door component, a fair amount of labour has gone into that piece so any time savings is a win. I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to share this bit and process that you have stumbled on, especially showing us to go deeper on the ends with the mortiser for shavings clearance. Cheers mate!

Mate, its a comment like that that has made making this video worthwhile so thankyou! I knew i wasnt insane looking for a cutter to do this task, and glad ive found one! did you order one and has it worked?

@@BradshawJoinery Just a quick ( hopefully ) question... I need a depth of cut of 74mm as my application is for interior doors, not cabinet doors. Ignoring the recommended collar marking ( hehehe ) could i get that depth in your opinion ? I can't seem to find that spec for the cutter... Cheers!

You’re costing me a fortune! Ordering! So hard getting the haunch spot on with hollow mortise, it’s alway a bit ‘rough’, and if it’s not deep enough and it’s not cedar!😂 it can kick a dogleg on rail/ style, this should be perfect!! Thank you 🙏

The short flue pattern bits are so useful. I use them from 3/8 up to 1,1/8 diameter all the time. Wealden sell some with a 3/16 flue length and double bearing and really cheap.

I know exactly what you mean, what we were learnt was to cut your haunch a little bit too big but cut it back at an angle and squash the slightly pointed part into the mortice, keep up your good work, love watching your videos 👍👍
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 2 года назад
Cheers Brad, yeah thats the old way, only issue is cutting the door down later on can expose a gap, and any timber compressed acts as a wedge on the joint, so hopefully this is double good. Its made my life a lot easier!

don't you find that the glue has nowhere to go with such a tight fitting joint? Not that I ever have a lot of these to do I think I would make the first 10mm or so the correct depth and then the rest a mm or two deeper , the shoulder of the tenon will still seat properly, the visible joint would look perfect and the glue will still have somewhere to go. It is a neat method none-the-less.

Hello mate great channel and i've been watching your channel for a couple of years. I'm a carpenter / joiner and have a workshop and have all the usual machinery that a joiner needs. Ok so my question is do you cover your machinery beds and blades with anything ?? The reason i ask that my table saw bed and planner bed go quite rusty when its moisture levels get a bit high due to rain, and i will admit to running a bit of green oak through the machines from time to time. I sand the beds down with sandpaper to get the rust off and wax them up routinely, but i still the rust coming through. Any ideas and advice would be a great help
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 5 месяцев назад
the basics of it are temperature change, the solid metal mass, will hold temperature and change slowly but the enviroment around it changes quick. Slow the envionment change around the machines down and it wont condensate... basically insulate the room and try to prevent moisture inside is your goal. If you cant i know some folk will oil the beds each night then remove before use. I had good results from the liberon machine wax in my old shop, but its impossible to prevent it some days, the machines would be covered in condensation.

Pretty slick, I could see getting set up with a methodical system and that not really adding much time to the whole exercise. Could even do it in a router table perhaps? Set a stop so you know you've gone far enough? Good vid!

Cheers mate, it will deffo help me earn a few £ haha! Handheld router is best for the stop start nature and quick easy positioning. Easier to move a small router acurately than a long door stile. Its just a dead simple operation for a task that is normally a chore!

I'm not a big fan of having that much tool hangout from the collet.... As a machinist by trade, its a recipe for disaster when machining steel... Obviously woods softer , but at the rpms the router is running , you can get vibration on the cutter which can encourage tool movement in the collet... Be careful, mate ! 🤔
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 2 года назад
Thanks Peter, I will keep the tool hangout to as minimum as possible and heed your advice! Thankyou

Hi Richard, Trend have offered to support the channel by providing any of their tools I would normally use or reccomend to me. Don't worry I won't be tarring my own reputation to promote somethin I wouldn't otherwise 👍 I've been looking to have a cutter like this made (all be it in 8mm diameter) for a long time and haven't been successful in finding a company to do it, so when I happened to stumble across this and it works, I'm sure there must be others who will benefit from it. In fact if it wasn't for trend coming to me with the offer I probably wouldn't have found it so it's win win for all I think. 👍

Dont you now have to state a ‘paid advert’ on YT if you promote an item that is given free by the company? I know you wouldn’t recommend something if it wasn’t good just because its free but in the interests of clarity and fairness to viewers its better to be open and say so imo.

It is stated i think but i will make it very obvious next time. It comes up includes paid promotion, and i also mention that trend have sent me the cutter in the early stages but i will add text just for clarity in future.
