KEEP IT SIMPLE ! So you if you physically or imagine or draw on paper your self standing with your back against hinged jam, or jam to be hinged If the door swings to the right its "RIGHT SWING" If it swings left its a "LEFT SWING" !! KEEP IT SIMPLE !

I love how everyone draws pictures. LOL Just find an example of each swing and make a 10 second video and say. "This is a right hand swing" It would take 60 seconds.

reverse handing applies with keying if you put the key in and push its RH or LH, if you put your key in and pull its LHR or RHR. Otherwise you confuse the whole process

everybody OV,ER COMPLICATES THIS , KEEP IT SIMPLE BY standing with your back against hinged jam if door swings to right its R SWING if left its a L SWING !!!!! DONT LET ANYONE TELL YOU OTHERWISE!

Ok, I was taught outside house doors are: hinges on left in swing door; left hand door; hinges on right in swing door ; right hand door…the attention is on the needed direction for their swing arc, the reverse swing is non-essential; same on out swing doors. This is with the hinges exposed or sticking out when facing the door. Shalom !

better question is, Why can't i just flip the door upside down and change the open and closing handle? Thats more of a statement than a question but that gets me closer to were i need to be, without redrilling the handle,

+Kiki Koralesky Sorry I didn't see this! Yes you can flip door upside down and change it to a RH swing ONLY if the hole for the handle is in the centre of the door. A lot of time the handle is 44" down and not 40" down...However if you chisel out the hinge location all the way through the door you can simply flip the hinges around and that will make the opposite swing. Hope that makes sense.

+aicram62 Yes this can be true if the latch side of your door is slightly beveled so it doesn't rub as you begin to close it on the jamb. Most old doors have this feature but new doors tend to just have all square edges...therefore a slightly bigger gap in the jamb to allow room for it to close without rubbing.

can you change the hinges on a LH swing door. Im standing inside the house and the hinges are on the left. I need to move the hinges to the right. Can this be done?

Only thing that would make sense is leave the door in the jamb and 180 the jamb so inswing would become outswing. Door latch or catch has a 3degree bevel on it. So door has to stay the orientaion it is in the jamb. I often 180 a door in jamb in bathrooms to make it open out into hallway because door swinging into bathroom crowds toilet and makes manuvering uncomfrtable in a smaller bathroom space.
