This Porsche 911 has so many mismatched parts it's no surprise they don't fit. Watch me bend them to fit and polish newer black trim to chrome. I was amazed how strong with window frames are as they kept snapping back into their original and unwanted shape. Also check out my recipe for polishing Porsche aluminum trim.
As it turns out there is a difference between Targa and Coupe trim, which I now know. As always I learn something new everyday.
Here are the Turtle Wax products that I think will protect my bare aluminum:

i see so many cars on youtube built in huge spotless industrial units, great to see such a beautiful car built in a normal everyman's garage

Nice video Tom. Trim is often overlooked, but on some cars, is an iconic addition that completes the look. Good to show how it can be saved to good effect. 👍👍

The trim is high quality on these cars, and eye level. So it makes sense to spend time making it fit better. There's no such thing as better than factory.

I think that people who buy project cars often underestimate how long it takes to work on certain things, that they become discouraged once they start working on it.
@GarageTimeAutoResto
@GarageTimeAutoResto 3 года назад
This is true! And that is why I try to encourage people to keep going. Everything is fixable, but it takes time. Even if someone needs to hire help or outsource, it is still doable.

@@GarageTimeAutoResto ...but it's hard to be sure you have all the small unobtainable original parts. Many times, the car was blown apart in the first week, and through the years things get lost and/or damaged... And lot of times you get fugly GRP crap, hideous wheels and phallic gearknobs from the 90s thrown into the deal, which were bought in week 2 of ownership, before they found the tonnes of bog/bondo and 80s newspapers... 🥺
@GarageTimeAutoResto
@GarageTimeAutoResto 3 года назад
Totally agree. It's buyer beware. The alternative is to pay market price for a decent driver and then redo everything at a financial loss. In other words most restorations cost more than they are worth. My philosophy is that everything is fixable or attainable. That's what makes this a hobby as opposed to a stressor.

The trim at 32:00. My 1982 has a small bit off surface rust underneath. I'm guessing it pops out the same way.

Clean with acetone before you start stripping or a very light sand? Maybe wax or something else preventing the paint stripper from working?

Great work. Would a coat of clear on the alu work to keep it shiny?
@GarageTimeAutoResto
@GarageTimeAutoResto 3 года назад
I'm not sure how long the clear would stay put? The same clear that I used on the paint needs a chemical bond made possible within minutes of spraying the base coat. Or it can be sprayed after sanding with 600. If I sprayed clear after 3000 grit or higher, I think it would slip right off? I'm optimistic that the turtle wax stuff will protect it from oxidizing. Waxes have come a long way! And it's easy to apply.

Is there a particular reason why you used the less-fortunate sealed-beam headlights and covers, instead of using the gorgeous euro-spec ones? I suppose you don't *have* to use the sealed-beams, because of the age of the car?
@GarageTimeAutoResto
@GarageTimeAutoResto 3 года назад
You are right, California doesn't really care if my lights aren't US seal beams. The only reason why they are on my car now is because my budget target was $10k including the price of the car. Phase 2 and 3 have bigger budgets. In fact I already have H4's in a box, but they need to be restored. So hopefully you will see a headlight conversion relatively soon.
@Paul_VanGo
@Paul_VanGo 3 года назад
@@GarageTimeAutoResto Ok. That's a relief. Porsche only put these on because they had to, not because they wanted to... But, they had the most elegant solution regarding the federal bumpers. So elegant, they even used it (thought a bit less protruding) on the Euro-versions. Minus the huge rubber overriders, obviously.
@GarageTimeAutoResto
@GarageTimeAutoResto 3 года назад
I'm not sure why Porsche didn't use the 356 sealed beam headlights? I've seen a few on 911's and they look good. Maybe they wanted a modern look?
@Paul_VanGo
@Paul_VanGo 3 года назад
@@GarageTimeAutoResto New rules, I guess. Glass over glass wasn't allowed anymore, so they had to come up with something. If they wanted to modernise it, they probably used that same look in Europe too. I'm glad they didn't have to.
