Ali Hussainy, host of Local Knowledge, walks us through some key elements in rigging for Dorado, tackle recommendations, locating them, and how to approach them once you've located them.
Dorado, Mahi Mahi whatever is your favorite term for them is, they are a premier gamefish when we think of warm-water years in Southern California. They put up a great fight, they make for great table fare, and are a great sportfish due to how visual they are in the water.

Was stoked to go 2 for 3 (one spit hook) on the 3/4 day a month ago out of dana wharf for my first Cali dodos...20 pound flouro and size 2 hooks worked well. Addicting fish to catch!

OMG!!!! this makes a lot of sense when you talk about the hook and the bait swimming with the line, recently i skunked on a party boat and this explains why i was using 30 lb and a 1/0 hook lol 😆 i guess those baits were not attractive swimming sideways in the water lol

Awesome video, thank you for sharing. I have a question, can I use a lure instead of live bait and if so which one would you recommend? I'm going again in 2 weeks out of dana point. (Yet to catch one the last two trips)
@BDOutdoorsdotcom
@BDOutdoorsdotcom Год назад
You certainly can! Sometimes they will prefer a jig to live bait and vise versa. A small coltsniper style jig can be super effective, as well as the surface iron.

Thanks Ali.. Even us old dogs need a good review on tactics and knots... timely vids on my feed this week. and yes There are FISH Oceanside!! We have banged a few, and marlin too! I need a good anchovy lure option?? when are dines are beat at the end of the day and the dodos are all on the micro bait that that is everywhere . Anytime! A small coltsniper type bait is a great option when those fish are keyed in on anchovy!

Great video, thanks. What to do when Dorado won't bite? Saw nearly 200 today on charter boat out of Newport Beach, CA and the Dorado would not touch sardines, sardine lures, or knife jigs. They were heavily pressured over the previous days.
@BDOutdoorsdotcom
@BDOutdoorsdotcom Год назад
Sometimes there is nothing you can do to get them to bite unfortunately. A few tricks are fishing pieces of chunk bait, spraying the surface of the water with your washdown hose to get them fired up, but when they aren't biting the best thing you can do is hop in the water and feed them the steel.
@jake9705
@jake9705 Год назад
@@BDOutdoorsdotcom -- Sounds about right 😂 I could tell our crew and captain of the expensive charter I was on were frustrated about the fish not biting but you can't blame the crew for that, obviously. The crew did a great job putting us on tons of fish but these fish were anorexic. As dozens of Dorado swam within ten feet around the boat we all joked about getting the spears and bow fishing gear out.

Does fly-lining work on a spinning rod with 65lb braid while fishing for 40-50lb bluefin?
@BDOutdoorsdotcom
@BDOutdoorsdotcom Год назад
That can certainly work. You'll want to also use a fluorocarbon leader. Many will say that for flylining baits, you should fish a conventional reel, but it can be done with a quality spinning reel as well.
@gbox7142
@gbox7142 Год назад
@@BDOutdoorsdotcom ok what lb fluorocarbon
@BDOutdoorsdotcom
@BDOutdoorsdotcom Год назад
@@gbox7142 It depends what size fish you are targeting...generally 40lb will be ideal for fish ranging from 20-60 pounds. If you're on a Sportboat just ask your deckhands and they'll let you know. If you are on a private boat, make sure to have a range of fluoro so that you are prepared for whichever size fish you encounter. Hope this helps!

What do you recommend for drag settings on reels for those big bluefin tuna. For example, is 30-35lbs of drag too much for 100lb test with a 200lb leader?
@BDOutdoorsdotcom
@BDOutdoorsdotcom 2 года назад
We set our strike at 25lbs. Need more push the lever forward more. General rule for drag is 1/3rd the breaking strength of the line. 25lbs on 100lb is plenty to start the job.
