Doreen Ketchens and the Ketchens Family, Royal & St. Peter, July 2015 

The first time I heard this set, I had tears in my eyes. THAT kind of talent, a clarinet virtuoso with a voice husky and of infinitely versatile range, just playing on a street corner...Those people who are walking by and not paying attention have no clue what they have just missed. But that is so New Orleans: rare and precious things literally in the street gutters, and people are just bustling by and are so unaware that they have failed to identify a treasure that is right in front of their eyes (and ears).

@@d.g.leblanc7450 the indifference unfortunately comes from familiarity. Seeing/ hearing genius all the time eventually there is a danger of taking things for granted. It's only when you move to a cultural desert that you reflect on it all. I reflect now on a regular jam session that allowed complete musical freedom, at one point it just seemed like noise, now I live in a different town. On reflection these sessions at the very least allowed me to blur the boundary between myself and my instrument, you really want to become one with your instrument. I realise that it really developed me as a musician, and now I really miss those times. I experienced this thing living in Glastonbury, England. A place that has many musicians, some of them are true genious. At the same time I was (and still am) very inspired by new orleans. If circustances allow I would love nothing better than to travel to louisianna to see Doreen play music on the street with her band. My philosophy is that everone has their own unique genious, you just have to be made conscious of it. Obviously with doreen you would need to be completely dead inside if you don't feel anything. I tend to cry when I hear doreen play, the extreme beauty of the music contrasting sharply with the pain of my life. When you see/hear true beauty you will have tears.
