Over 30 years after the racist murder of her son Stephen, 18, in 1993, Baroness Doreen Lawrence is still fighting for justice.
Baroness Lawrence, an Honorary Fellow of Murray Edwards College, Cambridge, joined us on 2 May 2024 to speak in front of a packed audience of students and others.
In conversation with our President Dorothy Byrne and our undergraduate and graduate Presidents Jess Hammond and Atmika Patnaik, she spoke powerfully about her efforts to secure justice for Stephen’s murder and the resulting investigation into claims of police corruption. For her, the changes in policing remain ‘only partly done’ as she continues to campaign to see Britain become a fair, just and tolerant society for all.
Baroness Lawrence was awarded the OBE for services to community relations in 2003 and was subsequently made a life peer in the House of Lords in 2013. She has won praise for her tireless dedication to community, anti-racism and other causes close to her heart and in 2014, she was named the most powerful woman in the country by the BBC.
In 2020, she established the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation where she is continuing to provide a legacy of hope for young people, especially those from marginalised backgrounds.
