My favorite Dorian Yates story is that he was training in the U.K. and he stepped outside to miserable weather knowing that his competition was basking in California sun. He said..."They are gonna pay, man they are gonna pay!" Motivation!!
I met Dorian once and I asked what does it take. He said one word, CONSISTENCY. For those that say steroids, they’re useless without consistency. The stage was complete with steroid users and abusers, but the most consistent in diet and training won 🏆. Steroids enhance your greatness, they do not make you great.
Carolina to the Caribbean Genes if maybe you’re talking about insertions. Beyond that, unless your genes can control how motivated you are in the gym they’re not doing much. I will admit any day of he week Dorian Yates and bodybuilders like him all put in a tremendous amount of hard work to achieve physiques steroids alone could never give them.
Also an amazing outlet and focus tool for recovering drug addicts. They are generally emaciated and skinny to begin with, getting visual results usually happens pretty quickly when combined with a trainer and a decent food plan.
True but hard cardio like training for marathon is equal therapy for stress. (I've done both). Honestly, just in terms of stress relief I probably prefer running. But it doesn't make you look good, so overall gym wins
@@baltonraven4507 people who saw him in the flesh on stage say it was obvious he was on another level from everyone else. Photo's don't do him justice.
Face off when he signed my book and shook hands he was very humble but I sensed he would and could snap if you pissed him off very intense man but he smiling now, so nice too see
a lot of successfull people who worked very hard for it are humble persons in my experience. The arrogant ones are those who are in the good middlefield and did not have to sacrifice far too much to get there.
Because he feels accomplished and he's older and probably feels the wear and tear it caused. Most men in their 40s and up who accomplished what they planned as young men and are done with the bullshit. No need.
@Dominik Hamann Yes but not naturally. Forget Ronnie not taking steroids and winning 8 Mr. Olympias and the 2,500 calorie a day low fat high carb diet. What was it? A whole chicken everyday or something like that and the complex carbs?
if you dont get big forearms or traps( Kai's case) from all the deadlifts and compunds then its a genetic thing and you have no control over that , no matter how much you try to bring them up.
I remember growing up in the 90s and seeing his photos thinking this is a bad and tough dude. I'm glad to see he's still around, appears humble and nice.
What is insane? Many bodybuilders train their legs properly once a week and most of them feel the pain for a couple of days - which is pretty normal - and some even 6 days after.. Yates isn't extreme in that regard.
@@verynice9726 you're wrong. Not everyone does it like he do. Not everyone knows the combination of smart work and Hardwork. You're talking about average body builders who's nowhere to be found compared to The Dorian Yates. Considered by most the goat.
@@henrykhiangte3834 Yates knew obviously what he was doing and he is one of the best and most determined bodybuilders of all time, but that wasn't my point.. I was reacting to your post that it is "just insane" that he trained his legs once a week and that he felt the pain for 4 to 5 days, while in reality there is nothing insane or extraordinairy about that part, most bodybuilders feel the pain for a couple or even 5 days after a proper leg workout.
I could listen to Dorian, all day Long! A super dedicated Warrior. His mindset - when he was training in his heyday, meant he was destined to greatness. An incredibly, interesting man.
Its crazy how jelly some of yall are. Was this guy on the sauce like a mug? Fuck yeah he was. All Olympia competitors are. Most cant comprehend what dedication it takes to look like that. Being that big is a chore, they literally are too big. The amount of food, training, sleeping and yes steroids it takes to achieve and maintain a body like that is nuts. What impresses me,if not the physique, is just the pure drive and dedication that it takes to do all of that for years on end day in and day out.
Because I enjoy bodybuilding naturally myself, but I still respect certain bodybuilders even though they take steroids. Every athlete in any sport uses steroids at the top level. People just look down on Bodybuilders because they're the biggest so it's the most obvious. I hope you're also going on other videos related to baseball, football, etc. and calling all of them idiots too. And also dont forget to go on all of the junk food, tobacco, and alcohol related videos to call them fucking idiots for damaging their health with no positive benefits what so ever. At least Mr. Olympias achieved their dreams and will be remembered. Stop hating and focus on improving your own life.
What eludes you is that bodybuilding has no inherent value. Yes it takes work and dedication blah blah, but so does being a heroin addict. So at the end of the day it's nothing more than an expression of neurosis. And everyone knows it too, so maybe your perceived jealousy is actually something else. Maybe it's pity. Use all that determination and work on something worth while, then I'll give you respect.
Bodybuilding is such a hard sport, people don't Realize how reclused these guys get to Compete at that level. 8+ meals a day, Steroids, workout 3+ hours a day, and the Money on food is OUTRAGEOUS.....you ain't gonna grow on steroids alone, it takes a Ton of food and dedication, Day in, day out.
Dorian is a cool dude and was such a monster....holy shit. I was a teenager in the early 90's and still remember some of the black and whites in Flex, etc. Especially the one side tricep pose picture that is infamous.
I bought Flex, Ironman and Muscle & Fitness back in the early 90’s in my teens. Back then the magazines weren’t literally ads every second page. I always liked Mike Matarazzo.
Yes. That was a crazy photo. I had the magazines with that photo in it. I used to spend lots of money on body magazines back in the day. Used to check the shop around the days when i knew the next issue was due. Used to buy them all :) I loved bodybuilding and gym in the 90s and early 2000s
I love Dorian! He's just real. He's open and honest about drugs and training and himself and the sport. Really cool guy. It drives me nuts to see people shaming him for being "small" now. These people have no idea how much effort is required in building and maintaining that much mass. It's so much more than steroids. It's diet, training, sleep...sacrifice. He missed out on a lot of stuff to accomplish this goal and now he's happy just being "normal" and being able to buy a suit off the rack. I can respect that. Nothing wrong with being normal.
Just hearing him talk about the pain he was in all week and how he craved it is motivating. Not to say I’ll think the same way, but love the perspective.
Steroids just make you more of what you are already,if your a big guy you'll get bigger than a small guy would given the same imputes ,if your an idiot you'll become a bigger idiot ,if ,like me your a horny kinda guy you will become a walking erection.
The greatest of all time. Absolute legend, high intensity training trumps volume every day. He was a pioneer and has had a great career after. Glad he’s doing well.
For those who think DY is just talking big... he isn’t. Maybe the single most intense actual Bodybuilder of All Time. That is all he did. No pub events, nothing. Shows and then training. I’ve always wanted to have about 1/3 of his crazzzzzyyyy determination
Dorian was a God when I was in my teens and 20's and hitting the gym in my youth. He was a train-to-failure guy and subscribed to the Metzger's Heavy Duty training philosophy. I trained one set to failure for years and made huge, natural gains.
Dorian still seems to be in good health not like a lot of the others. Great podcast I watched the whole thing. Funny seeing his reaction to seeing himself lol.
Reminds me of one my English teachers in college. Was scrawny, and I had a couple fellow basketball players in the class. One day he said he used to be a body builder and we all called him out calling BS. Then he pulled out the photos and we were like Wtf?!
@Mic Rophone Have you considered that guys like Olivia continued to juice throughout their lives? Once you abuse steroids for many years, your hormonal levels are messed up forever and no way can you look good without the juice.
25 years ago Yates looked even more impressive, there had never been someone like him. I remember watching those black and white photos with my friends in the gym. We were speechless.
they do not really shit on them they just point out how bodybuilding is not as functional or healthy as other forms of exercise.. Dorian even admits this during the podcast because it is true. If Joe gave Dorian any less than maximum respect on this podcast he would look foolish, this guy put more time and effort into his training than almost everyone else. Legend.
I don’t think people can actually fathom the will power of this man and his level of pain tolerance. Don’t follow bb much but his work ethic is the reason he’s my fav bb of all time.
@@gencademi9362 Ronnie risked his body and did the free weights to become bigger than everyone else. and it got him 8 Mr. Olympias and arguably the greatest of all time. He's such a nice guy too and im sad to see the first thing you can call a person that's been through so many surgeries and so much pain for the sport he loves an idiot.
@@zukoshonor2457 no i love Ronnie to death. But you can't be doing 2 rep sets if your goal is hypertrophy. And yet after all the surgeries he still works out, that shit is just moronic
@@gencademi9362 Seriously you will tell Ronnie about training? Do you even know all paths to hypertrophy? Do you know role of central nervous system? Training for strength improves your CNS efficiency, means better inter/intra muscular coordination, means you will be able to lift more weight in hypertrophy regime/methods(drop sets, super sets, single/double rest pauses, post/pre fatigue, contrast sets and all kinda different rep schemes etc). Typical internet forum warrior with basic 8-12 reps are hypertrophy. Cheers mate.
So what r u saying, that he would have won all natty cause his training was so intensive? Get a grip. The roids packed 60% of the mass, just look at the post roid shrinkage these dudes experience. It's watching something melt under the sun. Synthetic hormones are extremely potent and its MUCH easier to train super hard when you have truck pulling you up the hill, the latter is how Dorian explained the juice, he's been quite honest about the advantages of roids. I train hard ALL natty, the roiders wouldn't last a second in my world cause they can't even go to the gym without the roids. I know many pro's and they just quite cause they are not able to put in the effort natty. I've been at it all natty since 1985 myself and I've seen so many juicers come an go. They are roid warriors.
As I wrote I've been at it all natty since 1985. I know what gym life is all about. I've seen so many juicers come an go. I don't respect their "efforts" - as a matter of fact it takes much more to do it all natty. I don't see the roiders at the bench press when they come off the juice, they don't have the ability to do it natty. No respect. Chemical gains are for rent.
And I say bullshit. Steroids may very well make you a champion. If your placing 15th cause your natty you CAN climb to number 1 if your willing to go all out and do whatever it takes chemically. I've seen that happen repeatedly. Synthetic hormones combined some diuretics makes ALL the difference in the world! That's why people take'em. As mentioned, I've been at it all natty since 1985. I know what gym life is all about. I don't respect roiders "efforts" - as a matter of fact it takes much more to do it all natty. Don't talk to me about dedication - dude.
HauntedOath That's a load of bollocks as well, I don't give a fuck if someone uses, it's called freedom of choice you mug and I respect that people choose to do roids to get what they want from their training.. If Yates wanted to be a 175lb natural he could have been. He didn't. He wanted to be a freak and didn't hurt any cunt in the process.. Apart from all the whining bitches in these threads. And any issues he gets from his lifestyle, well, I guess he'll accept that as well because that's just how Shit goes. No one will remember a cunt like you and his self righteous comments. Dorian will live on for Fucking centuries because of his achievements.. Now move along
I love D.Y. attitude~"there's nobody that can out work me in the gym mentality" which actually predates Kobe Bryant's "Mamba mentality" who has gone on record to say the same! D.Y. has always been one of my favorites because he tells the truth even about his own steroid use which most bodybuilders steer clear of these days, and goes into depth about why so many ex-body builders are dropping like flies(dying)because they didn't cycle on & off as he did and Dorian is a testament to this by being in great shape these days at the young age of 57!
DY is a lot smarter and mentally tougher than most bodybuilders! Ronnie Coleman probably worked just as hard as Dorian but he wasn't intelligent enough to decrease the amount of weights lifted during the final 12 weeks pre-competition!! That's why Dorian is relatively healthy now and Ronnie is confined to a wheelchair! It's a very fine line between getting bigger and injuring yourself!
I think that's a factor too. A lot of the guys we see who are messed up or have passed away competed well into their 30s. Lee haney retired at 31, Ronnie didn't win til he was 35
I remember when I was 16 years old and started working out in 1983 and would always read muscle and fitness magazine and one of the pictures on the mirror wall that I created in my gym in the garage was Frank Zane! It was quite a surprise to see Dory and mention him!
How did they not show his back and talk about it? Dorian is considered to have the best back of all time, that's what he was most famous for. You can see in the pictures how absolutely massive his delts are from the front
I look up to Yates for who he was, and just as much for who he is now The will-power and decisiveness to achieve what he did, and also to leave it behind when he was done Its SUPER rare
I totally agree with what Dorian said about the 90s ... and that's also why he's my all time favorite bodybuilder ... mass, but combined with very beautiful (elegant) lines , conditioning, .. a very cool professional way of posing .. nowadays some bodybuilders dance or almost strip and move like girls ..
Dorian is one of the only bodybuilders who doesnt come off as pompous. Funny because he was one of the greatest to ever do it, but he wouldnt tell you that. Those pictures tell the story of his accomplishments. The man came into bodybuilding , trained like a madman, took the trophies, prize money and everything along the way then left with his health. The guy basically approached it like a business and he succeeded and then retired. He was smart to leave when he did, now he can live his life and pursue other things he enjoys. All the best to the man, may he live long and happy and thanks for giving the fans a glimpse of what pushing it to the limit was.
What I like about Dorian was he preached the same intensity that Mentzer without saying “this is the way you build muscle.” He understood that there’s multiple paths to the same outcome, but argued that his method was more efficient.
I was never a huge fan of DYs physique, but you can’t fault the man for intensity, focus, motivation and drive. A true come from nothing rags to riches story. Anyone who’s seen Blood and guts dvd knows what I’m talking about. NOONE trained like him. No one.
"Body Building is just an Adaptation of Stress. If your put your body through a certain amount of stress, it will say I need adapt to handle this." Great Little piece of Info, thanks for this Interview Joe. Great job as Usual my friend.
Great interview... fascinating guy can't believe he looks as good as he does now. Looks healthy! That's what the intelligence gets you, not just a meat head, he put in the time on his body and mind. Legend!
@Your Dad Ya they build their muscles for show while power lifters build for strength. They both require the same level of dedication, effort, discipline etc
@4:15 Yates "It's generally accepted the 90s were the peak of competitive physiques.." So true including other major sports; basketball, football, etc.
