There is also a Warrior Armor set found in the water by the Hydra near the tower/shortcut to Great Wolf Siff. The Elite Knight Set is found in the Dark Root Garden before the Moonlight Butterfly fight.

I believe the official lore was more along the lines that the gaping dragon was a twisted, mutated, offshoot of the main dragon lineage

@@theonewhoismany8072 Miyazaki and co. have said quite a few things about the Gaping Dragon. The boss' designer said that the dragon changed due to starvation and needing to find whatever even remotely edible things it could while in hiding.
