DOS is when you put a comment in a text box, using so many characters (think a doc file of 100s of pages) that the server is unable to process it and stay online. So many big websites don't put a cap on the number of characters in a text box. Easiest take down ever
The advantage is that the authorised users are denied from accessing the servers. A company contains a lot of confidential information, due to DOS attack employees of a company cannot reach to the company servers.

DDoS are weak sauce... people need to stop allowing their PC to get p0wned into a botnet. Its pretty easy, just stop clicking every damned thing on the screen indiscriminately.
