Came here to find a rundown for a friend. Was not disappointed. Quick rundown of surfaces: Water/blood - can be electrified, frozen, or evaporated. Curse sets decaying once physical armor is removed. Cursed water deals water damage per turn. Cursed blood does not. Fire - can be turned to steam with water. Cursed fire turns to necrofire, which can't be removed by normal means. Ooze - poison surface. Resisted by magic armor. Can be blown up with fire. Cursed poison applies acid, which eats physical armor. Oil - slows. Can be blown up with fire. Cursed oil has a chance to explode when walked on. Ice - can be tripped on. Can be either blood or water based. Cursed ice can apply frozen through magic armor, while cursed frozen blood can only freeze if magic armor is missing. FUN FACT: combining boots and nails will make characters immune to slipping effect of ice surfaces. Steam/blood cloud: puts out fire. Can be electrocuted. Cursed steam sets decaying, resisted by physical armor. Electrocuted water/blood/steam/blood cloud - sets shocked. Continued movement sets stunned. Cursing any of these skips step 1 and stuns immediately. Poison cloud: poisons. Can be blown up with fire. Does not linger as fire if blown up, unlike ooze. Fire cloud: same as fire, except does not generate smoke upon dissipation. Smoke - only exists normally the turn a fire goes out naturally. Blocks vision. Cursed smoke applies blind and suffocating. Blessing any of these surfaces removes cursed version of the surface or applies some sort of healing/buff to the surface (damage to undead instead of healing): Fire - sets holy fire. Immune to burning, heals per turn. Water/blood/steam/blood cloud - heals on movement. Electrified water/blood/steam/blood cloud - applies haste. Blessed frozen surface - chance to apply magic shell (magic armor buff) Blessed poison/poison cloud - applies regeneration buff. Blessed oil - applies fortified (armor buff). Removes petrified and stunned. Blessed smoke - applies invisibility. Blessed fire cloud - immunity to frozen. Applies healing.
I just completed a playthrough of Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous before jumping into this game and after the first couple of hours I was totally confused by the combat in this game. Found this video and now I'm much more confident going forward.
I guess i just get confused by the elemental stuff, if say i am on fire should my focus be to walk out of the fire, try to put out the fire, or just ignore it and keep attacking?
Depends on your build tbh. If your the type of build with not so much magic armour and low HP then yeah gtfo of there. If you're a full pyro mage lizard with the Elemental Affinity (spells cost 1 less AP when you stand on a surface of the same element) perk then take a whole ass bath in that fire cause you'll be able to sling fire spells like a madman
DOS2 was on sale this weekend. All us unwashed BG3 folk gonna be coming here :) I'm very early in the game (started exploring the island) but I can see some patterns already. Meaning, BG3 recycles a LOT of story stuff from this game, doesn't it, hmmnn? The mechanics are also similar... but different... But anyway... So far, DOS2's mechanics seem more complex than BG3's, which I love. But the UI leaves a lot to be desired. Which is what I wanted to ask. I'll go looking after I've finished this video, but do you have a basic UI / interface tutorial? That might be useful. EDIT: Here's a very specific question about the mechanics. Can you ever get more action points? Or make your action points usage more efficient? Or is it locked in for the entire game?
@@MortismalGaming Haha, the UI is just very crude, I'm getting used to it. But another newbie guide mentioned something that's HUGE: unused action points carry over. Literally a game changer, lol.
I really hate games that you have to do out of game research to actually play....but it's too late to return it now so I guess I better learn how to not be garbage
I think one of the biggest flaws of these otherwise amazing CRPG style games is exactly that, the sheer amount of out of game research you have to do. Hence why I make the videos 🤷
Gonna be honest, I've watched a bunch of tips videos after about 30 hours of play with my not-really-gamer wife...and pretty much none of what I've found is news. This game in particular pretty much gives you all the tools and knowledge to figure stuff out if you're paying attention. Even has a couple of really cute moments/environments/setups to teach you mechanics.
Mortismal, so do you feel that the armor dictates certain play styles. It seems that dual class type style is no longer viable. I wish they went towards a pillars of eternity defensive stat type. It just seems like I may not be able to experiment. That's my hesitancy about playing the game. Am I wrong with this thought?
i want to ask how to move your character into position before a battle. like if an enemy is talking to you character, i see some people move their companions into position before finishing the dialogue to start the battle? i try to do it but my character all follow each other and, would not stay in 1 spot.
@@Virtual_Citizens_Gaming Everything looks great about it, I love games like this, but as soon as things grind to a halt and everyone starts taking turns it removes all immersion from the proceedings. If there's some tactical thing i'm missing, or fun factor i'm not seeing please let me know what it is. Please!
@@MrALenCar321 it works in xcom because the levels are small one-off encounters. In a large rpg it is just mind numbing waiting turns to fight every single enemy in a vast world.
I always buy a Turn based strategy and return it, its too much work. But I am very conflicted by this game as it has the best dynamic story line. I don't know if I could do the Git gud routine not this as I did on Sekiro.
Yeah I have this game and I want to explore and get into the story. But the turn base combat for me is just stopping me from playing. Wish Lorian just added real time as well, not everything has to be one way to plz the hardcore audience. Half the reason I'm skeptical on Baldurs Gate 3, I feel like they should do what obsidian did with their over top RPG combat.
i know you've done this video in a while but can you perhaps ( or have you and i missed it? ) mention the cursed surfaces that seem to fuck up my partners mind so much and i tried explaining but i suck at it hahaha and the whole blessing it once to neutralize it and then bless to make it useful.
Trying to remember other games that use a point pool combat system like this but coming up blank, Can anyone else think of one? I know there are some out there just cant remember.
Seems boring from a prospective of a non-turned based rpg player...its on sale 20€ on steam but i dont know if i will enjoy it...im more a thewitcher/skyrim or mmorpg /arpg type of player
I just got this game and im at level 4 just having got past the fire slugs(somehow).. And im sooooooo bad at the game that its making it unfun. I just simply dont get how not to suck ^^ hope this video helps me out..
This is more of the basics really, getting good at it is really just understanding how to make enemies lose their turns through stuns etc, and building a party around that
Try looking up a build and carrying a loremaster slave (max loremaster on someone) in the party. If you right click someone and examine them, your loremaster will show you their strengths, weaknesses, and other important information. Some of them are obvious, like skeletons being undead and thus healing from poison and taking damage from recovery spells, but some of them are less obvious, like which voidwoken ignores or heals from which form of damage.
Heard this was best rpg ever. Bought & game is a major bastard on normal. Murder & steal from civilians to afford armor needed. Try to save someone only fr them to b murdered anyway. Game isn't melee friendly. Favors cheese by gamer to survive.
There is a huge skill curve on the combat, and knowledge curve of knowing where gear is and what's important when. If suggest checking out some builds etc and even playing on Story mode before diving too deep. I was so bad at first lol, but 400hrs later I got gud and did honour mode
D:os1 was even less melee friendly, best melee character is a intermingle between different classes(a big chunk of warfare, a bit scoundel, some of polymorph and maybe some necromancer or summoner. D:OS2 does not play well for class purists
