Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme broadcast by the BBC since 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called the Doctor, an extraterrestrial being who appears to be human. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. The TARDIS exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. With various companions, the Doctor combats foes, works to save civilisations, and helps people in need.
Beginning with William Hartnell, fifteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation, a plot device in which a Time Lord "transforms" into a new body when the current one is too badly harmed to heal normally.
The fourteenth series of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who is set to premiere on 11 May 2024, and is expected to air through to 22 June. It will be the fifth series led by Russell T Davies as head writer and executive producer and the first since his return to the show, having previously worked on it from 2005 to 2010. This series is set to be the fourteenth to air following the programme's revival in 2005 and will be the fortieth season overall. The fourteenth series was announced with Davies' return to the programme for its 60th anniversary in 2023 and beyond, with Bad Wolf becoming a co-producer for the series. The series is referred to in marketing and promotional material as "Season One" following the production changes and the acquisition of Doctor Who's international broadcasting rights by Disney+.
The series stars Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, a new incarnation of the Doctor, an alien Time Lord who travels through time and space in the TARDIS, which appears to be a British police box from the outside. The Fifteenth Doctor was introduced in "The Giggle" (2023) through a "bi-generation", in which he split from his predecessor, the Fourteenth Doctor (David Tennant), rather than replacing him. The series also introduces Millie Gibson as the Doctor's newest companion, Ruby Sunday.
The series, which was preceded by a Christmas episode on 25 December 2023, will consist of eight episodes, which have been directed by Julie Anne Robinson, Ben Chessell, Dylan Holmes Williams, and Jamie Donoughue. Alongside Davies, who wrote six of the episodes, the writers include Kate Herron, Briony Redman, and former showrunner and head writer Steven Moffat. Filming began in December 2022 and concluded in July 2023. It was the first series to be produced at Wolf Studios Wales following the move from Roath Lock Studios for the preceding anniversary specials.
Auditions for the role of the Fifteenth Doctor started in December 2021, assisted by casting director Andy Pryor. Davies was interested in casting "new talent" and someone "younger", with most of the actors who auditioned under the age of 30. There was also no limit on gender and background, with auditions held for men, women, and one non-binary actor. Pryor said that when casting the Doctor, "you always want someone unexpected... an actor who contrasts with what's gone before yet still brings those essential qualities that the Doctor has". Ncuti Gatwa was the final candidate to audition for the role. Davies said that the production team "thought [they] had someone and then in he came and stole it", describing it as "the most blazing audition". Executive producer Phil Collinson stated that Gatwa "did things with [the role] that I'd never seen an actor playing Doctor Who do".
On 9 January 2023, the BBC announced that Aneurin Barnard would appear as the mysterious Roger ap Gwilliam, and that Jemma Redgrave, having reprised her role in the previous series would continue to appear as Kate Stewart during the fourteenth series. On 20 January 2023, further casting announcements from the BBC revealed that Anita Dobson and Michelle Greenidge would appear as Ms Flood and Carla Sunday. On 3 April 2023, it was announced that Jinkx Monsoon would play a major antagonistic role in the series, called "Maestro". On 5 May 2023, it was announced that Jonathan Groff would play a key role in the series. On 24 May 2023, the BBC announced that Indira Varma would join the series to play The Duchess. On 7 June 2023, Bonnie Langford was announced to be reprising her role as Mel Bush for the series. On 15 June 2023, Lenny Rush was also announced, to play a "mysterious" character named Morris. Alexander Devrient will reprise his role as Colonel Christopher Ibrahim.

The fact that it came as a surprise to many viewers just further illustrates the point of the episode, that racism and privilege creates a bubble and a perception filter where we only see what we want to see and can safely ignore the reality faced by others. It shouldn't have remotely been a surprise because it was heavily signposted all episode long. - Everyone in Finetime was white (and most were blonde/blue-eyed). - Lindy immediately blocks the Doctor and doesn't immediately block Ruby. - Lindy spends the entire episode making micro-aggressions (and not-so-micro aggressions) towards the Doctor "That was you? I thought you just looked the same" "You're not as stupid as you look" "I know its wrong (that he is in the chat) and when this is all over he is so going to be disciplined. I can't wait" "I was right to hate you" - Lindy's evident shock that Ruby and the Doctor are in the same room

It more or less shows the difference between the UK and US where Brits like myself picked up more on the classism since that is more prevalent in our culture than racism whilst it is the reverse in the US. The UK never had Jim Crow laws though there was still discrimination and racism.

I saw a comment about "white people in a bubble" online in reference to this episode just before I watched it, so I can't honestly say whether or not I would have caught on before that final scene without that spoilery hint. As it was, I did notice Lindy's microaggressions toward the Doctor throughout the episode as well as the fact that everyone in the bubble was white, but my family members watching with me didn't. (We're all white.) Here's the thing, though. I don't think white fans should be focusing on recrimination or guilt over whether or not we or others noticed it, but on the fact that so *many* of us didn't notice. We should be learning from this instead. It's so easy for a white person to go through life completely missing the racism all around us (and within us), while BIPOC don't have that luxury. That's the lesson we should be taking from this.

The episode was so convoluted with intersecting themes all squished together haphazardly that I for one absolutely missed it. I assumed it was a class thing instead of explicit racism because I thought the character was talking to both Ruby and the Doctor when she said they weren't one of them (I missed the import of her saying "you, sir"), and she warmed up to the Doctor throughout the episode, even vouching for him to her friends, who didn't seem to have any reaction to him for themselves. Additionally, in that final scene, none of the others seem to object (or even react) to the Doctor's presence. I even noticed how strange it was that the entire supporting cast was white early on in the episode, but few "clues" toward the reveal the episode had (like the surprise at the Doctor and Ruby being the same room, or the Doctor's screen being "unauthorized" at first while Ruby's wasn't) were specifically presented to us as having simpler explanations (in this world, no one shares the same physical space, and Ruby's appearance in the bubble came after the Doctor overrode the earlier lockout, which he explained). I think it was all written to be caught on a second viewing.
@tubian323

I thought maybe they rejected him because he's not of Finetime, but as it turns out it was his skin color. No I don't it was "rammed down our throats" because there was no big speech about racism. The Doctor just looks at them then leaves.

You're not dumb Tharris :) I think it's totally fair that you've missed it on first viewing, but I'm glad you're putting in the effort to acknowledge it now. I thought the take on racism was brilliantly handled, and while I personally felt it was pretty obvious, what with the micro-aggressions along the episode, the different treatment to the Doctor vs Ruby, the language used, the fact that literally everyone else was white etc.. I can still understand how some viewers might just read it as being about classism or treatment towards outsiders in general. Unlike last week's episode, I actually loved that the ending wasn't ambiguous. The implication was pretty clear that they were going to their deaths, since there's no way these young, rich kids who never even learnt to walk or think for themselves, are going to survive out there alone in the "wild woods".. Hence why the Doctor tried so hard to get them to go with him instead, even though they were insufferable and racists (he's the Doctor, he always tries to save everyone regardless). However, they literally chose death, over being saved by a black person. It was so awful and so brilliant at the same time, and the Doctor's reaction was heartbreaking.

Great episode. Superbly made and Gatwah's acting at the end really sells it. Racism is hard to portray in a non-ham fisted way but they manage to pull it off alongside all of the other alienating effects of the social media bubble, psychological dependency etc. Top Doctor Who and top telly overall. This season of Doctor Who has to be the best in very many years, and I'm glad.

To be fair, upon second watch, the discrimination aspect THEN kicked in because initally it was like "oh she's just an egotistical brat who feels high and mighty, especially after that horrendous thing she did to September." But then you pick up on all the context clues, especially when they say stuff like you were helpful but only because you were trained to be, or like we don't associate with you physically, and not catching something just because they're close to someone of color. Like it's horrible! And the scariest thing about this is we knew we were geting this kind of episode but it's made so much worse knowing it's set in the future. As if nothing has changed or hell, gotten worse. It's an episode that really makes you think.

You can miss the racism with all the classism there. Ruby and the guy that led her out were servants, lesser people. But then the focus shifts to the Doctor, and they see him as less than human. A white commoner can serve them, but they'd rather die than have any association with a black person. This episode is one that requires some reflection to get everything. There were hints from the beginning that it's all fake and these people are probably terrible. I'd like to see a prequel about the home world. I missed it the first time too and on second viewing it seemed super obvious. I reckon that's because apart from the ending, there's always something kind of covering it up. She declines both Ruby and Gatwa, so I figured she was just generally rude, but it's only on second viewing that people pointed she is especially antagonistic to Gatwa while she was willing to hear Ruby out (even after it was clear they were actively working together). I assumed 'subservient' was just a weird line where she somehow figured out who the doctor was, and she assumed it was his fault because he knew about it when no one else did, 'you're not one of us' because he's an alien, etc. but yeah its the pattern on second viewing that I was like oh wait right she's blaming him for no reason, she's assuming it's his job because ... oh. I want to say it's because I picked up she was being weird but she was characterised as antagonistic and childish from the get go so I couldn't really make the link from "she's being unreasonable" to "oh she must be thinking racist things. That's what I'M thinking when I'm irritable like that" because I don't think that way, but honestly it's probably just because there's been plenty of odd dialogue scattered across the episodes and so especially after 73 Yards I wasn't really questioning anything, if something felt odd I just shrugged it off as 'character stupid' or 'that was weird, but this era's just like that I guess'. Once I was paying attention it wasn't as subtle at all and like you estimations went from "I hate this character what a waste of time" to "well... I still wish it was from the P.O.V. of someone I didn't aggressively hate but constructively it works as well as it can for this concept."

I figured the main woman was racist when she said The Doctor looked dumb despite his drip being less ‘out there’ than the others on her call. The Doctor’s reaction was in character and Ncuti’s acting was flawless but I will say I’d have loved to see him do a little speech about how he is actually a ‘higher being’ but they’re stupid and just see the colour of his skin, i guess that’s not how this incarnation handles things. I suspect he’d have gone off on them if it was racism directly at Ruby though.

its one of those episodes you have to rewatch RTD totally wrote it this way you go from her allowing the death of a person trying to help her and so cold blooded then lied, It was information overload over on DS loads only made the connection on the 2nd viewing as so much of the 1st part was clearly aimed at the social media snobs who gain 100k viewers then think they are gods. he's packed this story with so many under currents IMHO this would have been the perfect way to begin the series.

The Doctor is blatantly intelligent and proves he has knowledge which Lindy uses. Ruby was clear she wasn’t the mastermind in the duo. It is a class thing in the sense Lindy sees The Doctor as inherently lower class for being black I guess though.
@hotdog1214
@hotdog1214 Месяц назад
I don't think we're supposed to feel bad, I think its the point of the script, to have it hidden in plain sight but because there are so many aspects that could be used to reason Lindys attitude, the classism, the ageism, even just literally being in a bubble of friends - seeing Ruby and the Doctor as uninvited outsiders (like Spam) - it wouldn't occur to you its about race right up until the "Twist at the End"(TM). We're supposed to miss it, so that we don't see the ending coming - Lindy was a pretty annoying character but one who we are led to believe is only like this because of her circumstance - being in the bubble 24/7 - but that by seeing the real world perhaps she would be redeemed, but turning on Ricky September was a shocking show of her true selfishness, only for us to realise that even without that, there was never any chance of her growing as a person; by the Doctor saving her, she wasn't freed from her bubble at all, she's still in it... This is by design, we went along for the ride that RTD set out for us, its exactly how we are supposed to react.

I don't think that not noticing the under the skin racism is shameful. It doesn't mean you agree with the racists, it means you're looking for an even deeper reason for the conflict. That neither The Doctor nor Ruby called it out was very interesting. All the moaners banging on about being beaten to death with the "woke" stuff can't say it about this one because there was no comment in the episode about it whatsoever. RTD gave them what they wanted. I'll be curious to see what they all throw at this one.
@hotdog1214
@hotdog1214 Месяц назад
Agreed, seen quite a few fans and reviewers beating themselves up for not seeing it throughout the episode until the end, but that seemed to be the point, it was deliberately written that way so the ending would be more impactful. Also the best social commentary is written this way, subtle, hidden in plain sight, not a lecture but a portrayal.

@Sparx632
@Sparx632 Месяц назад
It’s explicitly stated that the Mantraps (slugs) were grown and programmed to attack in alphabetical order, and that the AI that controls the dots wanted to wipe out humanity after having to serve them for all this time. I’m not sure who else would have grown them. When the plan is exposed and the Lindy’s dot no longer has anything to lose it goes on the attack in the absence of the Mantraps.

@Docktavion I've seen many people complain the dots should have just killed themselves without the slugs, but it's Doctor Who, you always need monsters and something to sell toys for the kids (and I feel just the dots would make it a complete black mirror copy)
@Docktavion
@Docktavion Месяц назад
@@guymadgesam24 it’s the shoddy writing striking again. It would not have taken much to tighten it up. For a supposedly sentient AI, it chose one of the most convoluted ways of murdering them. It could have literally poisoned them, walked them off a bridge or any number of methods. That’s why I would have used the slugs for another purpose. The folk enter the slugs to get cleaned, move nutrients into their bodies and remove waste via osmosis. This would explain away the 3 days without peeing etc. they could have still used the slugs to kill them, it just gives them an actual purpose for being present. Like. Like September, he makes his vids and uploads them and then spends his time doing other stuff disconnected. He out of everyone should have noticed something out of the ordinary. I get the need for selling the merchandise which makes this season even more frustrating (the writers hate consumerism and capitalism, whilst actively promoting and supporting these practices…).

She's up there as one of the most evil characters going and thinks its totally fine. Its only 2nd viewing 1. No black friends 2. The non stop jibes to the Doctor 3. Then finally after the shock of the death has gone you hear the comments and then it twigs its like a Nazi Barbie remake. The layered writing makes you zone out to the inane chatter of her friends and its 100% directed and the social media snobbery Of people with 100 k followers who think they are gods, RTD 100% wrote the episode like this so when you actually rewatch get over the shock value how disgusting this character and her "friends" are then you put it together. You know those 3 will be dead within hours, even after begging them and being humiliated he still tries to help them. The nod at AI needs a mention also as they gained intelligence they saw these people were past saving and acted on it. Ricky might have been the same yes he wanted to escape but the chances are the way they were clearly all racists the DOTS knew exactly what they were doing.

I disagree... I think that D&B was as good as Boom. 73 Yards would have been number 1 on the list if it wasn't for the broken, unexplained, useless, poorly conceived ending. 73 Yards for the first 44 minutes was riveting only to be wrecked and ruined by the last 3 minutes..... D&B once again held us (my wife and I) in place but this time for the full episode right up to the end credits beginning.. My wife is extremely harsh on Doctor Who and episodes.... She said this was the best episode yet ( and she liked Boom and complained heavily about the bad ending on 73 Yards). It was an excellent episode.. I think people will come to see how amazing the actress was to pull this off and I REALLY hope no one will hold it against her in anything else she appears in because I could see people hating her for it. And unfairly so.... She played the character really well!!!! I'm not sure which one I would give 1st place to Boom or D&B at this point of the series.... Maybe I'll say its a tie for now....

Whose to say there won't be one colony that becomes extremely racists, despite them having even more knowledge and.access to it than ever. It being the past would have been sooo stereotypical, going "look how bigoted people in the PAST were".
