You made it look so easy. Awesome detailed instructions. I was weary about doing a project like this. After watching your video, I feel confident in attempting and completing it. Thanks again.
Thanks Joe. I was surprised at how easy it all came together too ! Even finding new doors at the reclaimed cabinet store. I’m glad it gave you the confidence to do your closets. Thanks for watching.
dunno if anyone cares but if you are stoned like me during the covid times then you can stream all the new movies and series on InstaFlixxer. Been streaming with my brother lately :)
AWWWW Mr.Visnans you made my evening as been looking for "French doors" on a super tight budget. Lol now i'm going to be able to accomplish with your Amazing video. Tnxs from sunny Florida.
Bravo for actually giving us the width measurements! All the other videos I watched didn't give directions or even mention their measurements! I at least was able to take yours and calculate how much gap you left so I knew how much to trim down my doors on either side.
Excellent Katie ! I’m glad the video was helpful. My opening was larger then those two doors combined so as you saw, I had to framed out the opening by a few inches on either side. Thanks for watching.
Great job!!! Cute idea with the time capsule. You should set up a hidden camera so in 100 years from now you can catch their reaction when they discover it.
Hmmmm. Maybe I did set up a hidden camera H ! I just didn’t video tape it because then it wouldn’t be a secret. Duh, the secrete is out now though. Thanks for watching H.
@@JayVisnansky. Did you install anything on the floor as a stop? Also what holds the doors from swinging open if they are only down my door knobs. Doesn’t it have to latch? Great video
@@donald4499 No Donald. There’s nothing on the floor. I just used the magnetic latch on top of the doors. The door jamb on three sides holds the two doors. Hope that helps.
You make it look so easy. A contractor just tried doing this job and left gaps at the top of the door edge and the doors were not level. You tested the fit of the doors, made the fit perfect, then secured the doors. Can I hire you? Great Job!
Excellent job there fella. I'm doing the same thing but wondered about what to use as a door 'catch'. That is to say, something to keep the doors from opening by themselves. Planned on using magnetic catches at the top. I didn't see what you used, did i miss it? As for the time capsule, I liked your items. As a kid I noticed the old timers who used pennies minted the year of install [usually under carpeting/linoleum] and / or along with sections of newspapers. Ads were great. I loved the old local telephone exchanges e.g. Melrose area was MEL-4738. The best were styles & cost of clothes. I'm renovating a duplex & now that I too am an old timer [74] I plan to add my own 'time capsule'.
Thank you J.Morrison ! It was a fun project to do. It all came together pretty quickly too. I used the magnetic catch for the door closer. I didn’t get that part on video. But that catch has worked out great. Yea, as a kid our phone exchange was Forest 4. Along with a party line. Thanks for watching and good luck on your project too !
Wow - love this video! We just decided to convert our laundry closet doors the same as you. Although, I’m not quite as clever as you so we will be outsourcing 😂
Very nice instructional video - sounds so easy. I have 2 bifold doors for the washer and dryer and they're really annoying doors. Not sure if I can make it like yours though. Thank you for giving hope in doing the project :)
Jay, you make that look so easy; thanks for the great video! My problem is that I am trying to correct someone else’s lousy installation job that was incorrectly mortised for 3-1/5” hinges when 3” hinges were more than adequate. The doors were also out by 1/4” to each other along the top.
Oh man your a dork great job, I'm doing a 24 inch french door on a tiny hallway closet and I am certain it will not be anywhere near as good as this is
Shoot, my pleasure and thank you for sharing. The key are the details... quite a few of these videos out there but yours lineup in the end better than any I've seen. You make it looks so easy, yet watching you do this I've talked myself out of doing this myself haha. Again, great job and I hope you share more projects if you do them in the future!
Thanks ! I just used common pine, 2x4 or 1x4 that you can pick up at Home Depot. I did rip it to fit but you could use a circular saw to cut it. Or if you just need to cut it to length, a hand saw would work too. Hope that helps you a little. Thanks for watching.
@Jay Visnansky - not using hinges or adding a jamb since the add'l bi-fold hardware (top and bottom pivot pins) for the left door will act as the hinge or swing point for the left and right door (pre-exisiting hardware already in place). Still sound sane? Bob
Thanks dannyhidefire ! Some of the tools I used to install the doors included a nail gun, door hinge mortise jig, tape measure, level and screw driver. I did a video on using the door hinge mortise jig here. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JMgWKgs-0TM.html I used a router for this but you could use a chisel and hammer. Hope that helps you get started. Thanks for watching.
Great video, thanks! Will be doing this to every closet in my house. What is the final jamb piece you use? The underside has that notch and the edge looks routered. I'm starting this weekend.
Thanks John. For the jamb piece I used some poplar and had to mortise for the hinges. I used a router for that. Here’s a video showing that process. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JMgWKgs-0TM.html Good luck on your closets.
Great video. Like many who have posted, I just needed some help in seeing the steps. What's your preferred closure mechanism? Couldn't tell if you used a magnetic one or what.
Thank you for sharing! I am going to remove current bi-fold door and reuse them to be double doors. Can I just screw and hang them in rough opening walls? I am not sure if there is stud behind the drywall. If that’s okay hanging the door using hinge into the stud behind the drywall? Seems you used nails to install the wood frame to the rough opening walls, is doors are too heavy to keep there?
I don’t know Jingnan how that would work. The reason I installed the wood frame was to narrow the opening to fit the size of my two slab doors. Good luck though on your project. Thanks for watching.
I use a magnetic latch at the top inside of the door Eric. I forgot to include that “little” detail in the video. The magnetic latch works great. Thanks for watching.
I got these doors at a recycle cabinet store Cheryl. They happen to have these new doors at the time. But Home Depot and Lowes have them too. Thanks for watching.
Legend has it will smith watched this video drove to his house and ripped trim off and grabbed men in black vhs out looked at man and said this was a classic how could u
I did get the floor and wainscoting done. Here’s a video on the finished room. Thanks for watching. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iWoI72Xcyzs.html
I used a magnet latching option Mike. The top does have a magnet. The one I went with is called E-Z Latch. I looked at various latching options and I opted to go this way and it works great. Thanks for watching.
What is the size difference between the doors and the rough opening? I have same set up but opening is already framed and trimmed. I just need to know what size doors to buy.
The doors I got were 34” each John. My original opening with the metal folding doors was larger then the combined two doors of 68” plus 3/16” for the spacing. So I just framed the spacing to accommodate the doors I got. Hoped that helps some John. Thanks for watching.
Can I ask what hardware you used to latch the doors closed? My husband and I are getting ready to switch out bifold doors for double doors but can’t decide which way to go for latching.
I used E-Z Latch to latch those doors Missy Briar. I too looked at various latching options and I opted to go this way and it works great. I still need to upload the video on this latching option. There’s a video on this though from the guy who makes it. And thanks for watching.
I bought my closet doors at a recycle cabinet store Marissa. Sure, I don’t see any reason you can’t replace sliding closet doors with these. Thanks for watching.
I used a hi-gloss for the doors Takla3210. I figured that there would be a lot of fingerprints around the edges of the doors and hi-gloss would be easier to wipe clean. But I don’t remember the exact roller I used. Thanks for watching
Thanks Tom ! That area where I put the time capsule stuff goes thru to the other side. So I just put the stuff there from the front. Thanks for watching.
Hi Mr. Jay - I have a pantry with an existing single 36" wide bi-fold door. My wife would prefer a French door configuration, while re-using the existing bi-fold door (it opens left to right). After removing the hinges creating the “bi-fold” function, I was thinking of purchasing a new bi-fold door hardware kit to install it on the left door, add the appropriate items (doorknob and magnets in the top frame) and voilà! I cannot think of any reason this would not work. Thoughts/comments/suggestions/warnings? Thanks (Happy New Year), Bob
I sounds pretty straight forward to me isitmondayet. Is the door thick enough for the new hinges or will you be using the original hinges that created the bi-fold function ? What about the jamb ? Thanks for watching.
@@JayVisnansky - not using hinges or adding a jamb since the add'l bi-fold hardware (top and bottom pivot pins) for the left door will act as the hinge or swing point for the left and right door (per-exisiting hardware already in place). Bob

boy they look great! lol --do you hire out? I have this same problem but with triple bypass doors my dear hubby took off. 10 years later, still off. Hard to find contractors who know what they're doing :-(
