This is the easiest solution. Another is to clamp a scrap piece of wood onto the backside to prevent blowout and patching later on

Just wanted to let ya know that love the long videos. Every Saturday night when you upload, my family & I all sit down & watch them. We look forward & enjoy them. Love being able to watch as a family & everyone regardless of age etc...(last weeks under the stairs playroom was a hit for my 3 & 5 yr old nieces.....they want one now😉), finds something they like in each video. Just thought you guys should know that we really appreciate your hard work, & having fun at the same time(as it shows in the vids). Thanks again. Cheers, A & Family👍🏻💙

You're a true expert and your videos are great to watch and extremely useful. One thing i have to say, having done some cabinet work - you can't beat a trim router and a simple router template to get those hinge recesses done in literally 20 seconds. That's why they round those hinge corners these days. Keep up the great work - these are so much better than some of the other 'diy help' channels out there in RU-vid land!

Exterior doors for sound proofing. I had French doors installed between my basement office and Theater room. I wanted it to be really quiet so I used wood exterior French doors with windows in them. The benefit in sound dampening having it airtight top, bottom and center is amazing. It was an extra $1000 but totally worth it.

Jeff, I wanted to thank you very much for this video. I had to install French doors in my house and you video guided me to complete it successfully. After a long though on the hardware to use I decided to use the roller balls on each door top. I bought two nice lever door knobs because this is for a living room/entrance. I decided not to install the latch (and catch) since I don't need any locking feature. It came out pretty well except for a little rattling sound I couldn't resolve. Now I have to paint it to match the wood color of the floor and the staircase. I have to figure out what kind of paint to use and how to match the color. I subscribed to your channel because I find your explanations very clear and fun to watch. Thanks again!

New home buyer so stumbled across this video. I was nervous when I saw this video was almost an hour long (usually means they're just rambling). So glad I started watching because once I did, I couldn't stop watching. UNMATCHED job balancing instruction with information. Additionally, I really appreciate you explaining not only what you're doing but how I can fix my mistakes. Instant sub. Look forward to tuning in in the future and going back and seeing what else I can learn from previous post!

Nice video Jeff! A trick for boring out holes for door handles with the guide tool you used to avoid chipping from the opposite side, start drilling on one side a little bit, maybe a mm or 2 and then go to the other side to drill right through, the template tool should guide it perfectly through still, and you'll avoid chipping and extra work patching.

A couple of inputs: 1. Estwing makes a really nice two faced mallet for use with chisel work and for installing door hardware so that there aren't chowder marks left by the dimpled faced framing hammer 2. When the doors are horizontal, stand them up on the long edge and clamp them together for two operations (drilling the ball latch holes and marking the top hinge mortices). This also reminds you to have mirror images for hinges...and please don't ask why I know this is a good idea :-).

Just a tip that you may already know. When you are drilling the hole for the handle, as soon as you see the tip of the drill bit come out the other side, take it out and drill from the other side, that way the hole saw won't make the wood/hdf splinter off like it did

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY It wasn't about the proper drill, you said you saw the center bit coming out the other side, should have switched drill sides then. You probably didn't think it would tear out that bad, then oops.

I truly enjoy watching your videos. You have taught me a lot of little tricks of the trade. Sometimes you show a little tip and I go DUH, why did I do It so much harder for 30+ years. Lol. It was comical watching you drill the door knob, using that honker of a drill. Lol. One tip that I could suggest if I may, would be, when the pilot drill popped through the backside of the door, remove the drill bit and start drilling from the other side of the door and that would prevent the massive tear out from the hole saw.

Central vac systems are better left to the 60s/70s when they were a "thing". You could buy 20-30 handheld rechargeable Dyson vacs and get much better cleaning than a central vac system. Technology wins today.

Always awesome video. I’m doing some home remodeling and your videos help a lot. I’m a hands on visual guy. I saw the blow out from the hole saw on the back side of the door. If you just get the center drill bit part through the back then remove the hole saw and drill from the other side placing the center drill bit in the small hole on the back side you won’t have that blow out. Keep the videos coming. One question is this the same basic install for exterior French doors. If not what’s different other than the weather proofing.

Is it normal to have a bit of a gap in between the doors? I have about 1/2 gap in between the doors. Also one thing I guess you can doo when installing the top stopper is you can measure the length of the top stopper and measure the same distance on your drill bit and then put a masking tape and when the tape hits the top of the door you know you have drilled far enough. Hope that helps.
@superlazyorg
@superlazyorg 3 года назад
If the gap at the top is not perfect, how can it be corrected? My door on the left is about 3mm low at top center and same spacing between the doors at the bottom. Maybe more shim thickness at bottom and less at top? Jamb is plumb though.

Any possibility you could do a video on replacing existing closet doors with newer modern doors. I have bi-folds everywhere and hate them - want the proper door (single or double), but not sure what to do about the 1" drywall overhang that surrounds the existing bi-fold doors to hide the outside gap. This is the finished edge of the wall - do I cut this so that it's rough edge and flush with the opening of the closet and then follow this video - or do I leave it and tuck the door framing behind it? I'm sure it's a stupid question - just haven't found a good example of how to do it properly on You Tube.

Could you do a lesson on using the laser level?

This is a good tutorial for a door from scratch but there's a lot of brands that make custom order prehung French doors where all you have to do is make it level and plumb in the opening and it will be as perfect as you possibly can get it.

using the self center hinge bit would be faster for hinge and other similar hardware installation. thanks

true, but this shows how anyone can do the job for 20 bucks worth of chisel. And it is a great tool to have in the arsenal.Cheers!

That door knob hole saw, why didn't you stop when the pilot drill cam thru and take the hole saw out and go to the other side and finish the hole from the opposite side?

Thank you for the video on this, been looking for something in depth like this. We are going to install a French door in the basement, would you suggest putting in doors before flooring or after?

Ryobi makes a great hinge kit for using a palm router on the slabs.

@HomeRenoVisionDIY 5 лет назад
ah , but first you need a palm router. most homeowners don't have one so that is why I showed the old school way. Cheers!

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY I reckoned that after I posted it. However it is well worth the investment if you have more than one set of doors to do.

There is a tool to make the round corner hinge cutouts into a square. It is a small "L" shaped chisel set into a block. A tap with a hammer sets your square corner.

I took the hinges off my front door to replace them with a different color. Now there is a 1/8th air gap that I just can’t get to go away. Do you have a video on how to adjust a front door so it closes tight to the air seal gasket. I added a compression door jamb weatherstrip but it would be better if that was a second seal instead of the main seal.
@RecklessTheory

they make "hinge shims" that go behind the hinges to push the door over ever so slightly.
