From the LK Chen Website:
Clarence Mackay Double Dragons Sui Dao was inspired by a rare Sui Dynasty (581 - 618) Dao in the Arms and Armor collection, Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Discovered in 1930 in a royal burial ground outside the Sui Dynasty eastern capital city of Luoyang. Clarence Mackay Double Dragons Sui Dao is a rare example of Sui Dynasty weapon and considered by many a National Treasure. This Sui Dao was brought to New York by Japanese antique dealer Yamanaka Sadajirō and purchased by Irish American Telecommunication Pioneer Clarence H. Mackay (1874-1938) as a gift to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. It has been in the Arms and Armor collection for the last 90 years.
Clarence Mackay Double Dragons Sui Dao preserved the classic tradition of the Han Dao with a Ring Pommel. The exquisite ring pommel feature a "Double Dragons Chasing a flaming Pearl" motif, that was reserved for the Royal court and officials of senior standing. The blade is straight, sturdy and designed for piercing heavy armor popular at the time rather than cutting soft targets.
The double hung scabbard fitting is based on the design of Iranian Sabers, showing the foreign design influence coming through the Silk Road. The double hang rings enable to Dao to hang horizontally from the body, making this Dao suited for horse riding, demonstrating the ascendance of heavy cavalry at the time.

From what I heard, that sword works better in its original dimensions (1-handed) That particular ring pommel design will continue onto Ming-dynasty Jian

I have the extended hilt / bǐng. My guess is that the short bǐng would make it tip heavy and clearly a dedicated cutter. LK Chen doesn't alter historical designs without good reason. I figure the long bǐng improved handling to make a jiàn-like dāo - best features of both IMO.

I saw the Sinkpoint video where he was able to try both versions and he seemed to favor the single handed version. I haven't had any issues with the longer handle, but I also can't make any comparisons since this is the only one I have. I would expect the original shorter handled sword was for cavalry and mounted use as a longer handle might tie up when swinging at downward angles. I am going to make a much longer video about the history of the sword and those like it from the Sui Dynasty. There are so many elements, like the pommel design you mentioned, that were implemented from this type of sword. And just the story of how the original sword ended up at the NY met museum, it's just fascinating!

@@SifuKuttel Looking forward to it! I watched Sinkpoint's video. For the long bǐng version, it seemed natural for me to grip between the plum blossoms - not at the guard in a hammer grip as Sinkpoint does. That, and using a jiàn grip or katana grip improves blade control IMO. Nice to dialogue, experiment, and investigate other fencing styles to make educated guesses at the most suitable grip and techniques for this blade design.

Nice piece , lk chen has some really cool stuff. Have you handled the scarlet sunrise jian ? I like the looks of that one and many others.

I am very impressed with the LK Chen collection as well as all of the historical Chinese swords I've missed out on! I have not handled the Scarlet Sunrise, it's had my eye for a while. It's also exciting to see that they offer a compact version, it could be very natural to handle at the new length.

I’ve been seeing that the ring pommel snaps off during cutting with this Dao, don’t know if LK’s improved this problem

LK Chen is pretty responsive on things like that so I wouldn't be surprised if they've already started working on it. Mine's been good so far, no signs that point to a weakened or loose pommel, although I haven't put it through the same pressure tests as Matthew Jensen 😅

I'm interested in what you make of this design and appropriate techniques Shīfu Kuttel. I own this one with the extended hilt / bǐng option and have been looking to HEMA rapier techniques as it resembles a Renaissance Italian or Spanish design. Also as a "proto-katana", Japanese techniques are informative. A common factor is that techniques are executed with the arms extended away from the body. The slightly longer handle adjusts (improves, in my view) the balance and it has an elegance to it, but is not long enough to make this a two-hander. Your hands/wrists would get pinched. There's a little real estate there for a helping hand. I've done light cutting with no issues. In all, not as clumsy or random as a blaster. An elegant weapon, for a more civilized age.

The length and straight blade really have an effect on the handling. It has a lot of moving weight which might be too taxing on the wrist to simply stop, so I've felt best in letting it swing through. I think you're in the right direction with looking towards rapier and katana techniques to see what fits well with the sword. The Sui dynasty and this type of sword was heavily influenced by Sassanid and Xiongu technology and weaponry. Although it may have originally been a cavalry design, there are claims that the two point suspension on the scabbard allowed longer swords to be carried by infantry without getting in the way or caught up on the ground. I think their might be some good ideas by looking at cavalry saber and Persian fencing techniques (if there are any records of it).

@@SifuKuttel To be clear, I'm just an amateur. Had the chance to chop some big ole pumpkins tonight - the thick spine lets it hit like a ton of bricks. On a horse - wham-o! The risk is over extending and losing center line control. Per Scott Rodell's video classes: on the down arc slightly push the blade forward (or pull backward) for a slicing cut. That will bleed out the momentum but it's an extra detail to forget under real pressure. Good examples of HEMA rapier: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0ChWmvBaWv4.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7L-Mjvx8s84.html and: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TzWj-RADiYk.html
