They make it look so easy but I know it's one of the hardest things in the world. In elementary school, I remember the girls would challenge the boys to try and it was just too hard for all of us. This is truly an art form that takes skill and precision.
CzarJuliusIII I’m going to perform at a school tomorrow double dutching, once you get the hang of it, it’s really really easy, I just joined double Dutch in the beginning of the school year and I’m on the traveling team
don't feel bad. I am a girl and I could not do it. I barely managed to do just simple jump rope and one other simple move. doube dutch is pure nutz. i have admiration for them!
Yea fun in elementary school i think, but i still got whacked from the rope here and there anyways. Maybe i was quicker cause i was young ( still hurt though) be like deciding for like 3-5 mins if i wanna jump in 😂😂😂 someone else was like "move it or lose it puss".
Growing up in Brooklyn, NY in the late 1940s I clearly remember watching with awe and amazement, young black girls doing incredible double dutch rope skipping in the street. In those days of de-facto segregation, the white neighborhood and black neighborhood were divided by one street. These were the days before play dates and scripted after school activities. We were regularly sent out to the street to play where we spent many unsupervised hours. We would often stand on the street that was the dividing line and watch the (mostly) girls our age (7 to about 13 years old) doing their amazing double dutch routines with the greatest of ease. No one on the white side of the dividing line ever attempted this sport. We wouldn't even have known how to begin.
Hey Alexander, Thanks for these. Some of them are the way I remember classic double dutch; the top part of the body is still and the legs and feet move (and do they ever.) The others are new to me, more show biz.
amycello They did. Don't you just hate the shit that our lives had to put up with? Damn, we were kids. I'm talking south. It was probably better than northerners wanted to admit, back then. As kids, our parents housed and loved us all. Parents down here cared about their kid's friends and their families. Good year for Mom, Dad; was good year for us all. ViceVerca! It's the children that mean the most!
Double dutch championship has been around since i was young, i was on a double dutch team when i was younger, im glad to see that jumping double Dutch has not been forgotten
Wow.. The more things change, the more they stay the same !!!!!!!!!!!!! I remember doing this as a girl. I did it all, double dutch, hot peppers, etc. and as a girl in school, I was the local champion. In that day, there were no international championships like this. We just jumped for joy! Now, youth is gone, I am 55, and watch and remember the joy of jumping, no pain, all energy and I can retreat in my mind to my girlhood days. "Apple Core, Baltimore "- almost feeling the sting of a rope
I'm 40 I remember in elementary school I wanted to double Dutch I was afraid to jump in the ropes. I love how double Dutch is a competition and the routines that can be done doing this activity.
They weren't going any faster than the ones after them they just look stiff doing it those so called Negros was doing it with ease making it look easy watch the whole video towards the end. LOL
one dutch two dutch queens of the double dutch we skip better than you by that much what our feet our moves are sweet our double dutching won't be beat.
I still ADMIRE anyone who is able (or even if you used to do this when you were younger). The jumpers make it look easy, but I know that it takes a LOT of work to do what they can do (and I’m not even talking about those that can do all the fancy tricks WHILE still double dutching! Kudos to them all! And it’s awesome to see the young men in there (when I was growing up, I only remember seeing ONE young guy who was able to hang with the girls). I know that’s gonna make me sound old 🤦🏾♀️
The 2nd team in yellow actually got my lazy ass off the couch just to stand up , clap my hands and cheer them on! You go with your bad ass selves - you ladies kick ass! Loved it .
I couldn't do this if I wanted too. I would give myself black eyes for sure lol. I just don't have this kind of energy, never had. its definitely fun to watch
It feels great to be part of one of the only teams that have been able to defeat the Japanese in freestyle & the ONLY team to date that has been able to defeat the Japanese after they learned a little something about speed. Not knocking the Japanese or anything like that.. they are definitely an extremely strong team.. It just makes me proud that we.. Stan's Pepper Steppers can still hold it down, represent for the Americans & bring 1st place, Top Doubles Speed Jumps & Best Overall Doubles Team of 2013 titles back to Far Rockaway NY. With that said best wishes from a current World Champion goes out to all teams competing in the 2014 ADDL World Invitational Championship. Ready your ropes.. Get set.. TIMER!!!
When I was in 4th grade I was in a double dutch team after school. I learned how to double dutch (which is hard at first) then I was able to add jumping a single jump rope while jumping double dutch. That was so much fun. My 6th grade teacher had me show the class then we put on a performance during a halftime basketball game. I don't know if I could do it again though as that was 40 years ago but it would be fun to try.
Loved doing this at break time at school in the 1980s. When I say we did ‘this’ we weren’t quite the experts as these guys lol have a ton of fun doing it though!
I remember doing this (white girl here) back in 1969 early 70s and singing Kamalamea Beast Day and other soul music while we jumped during school recess. A bunch of Catholic school girls practicing cultural misappropriation! Became the foundation of my love for soul, funk, blues and African music.
Hi MyBadCats, I'm an African American female who grew up in the 1950s/1960s and I never learned how to jump double dutch. Also, I couldn't turn double dutch ropes worth a darn :o( My guess is that "Kamalamea Beast Day" in your comment refers to the rhyme/song that is called "Cumala Vista", Flea Fly Flow", "The Bee Sting" and other titles. Thanks for sharing that. I didn't know that song was used for double dutch jumping. You mentioned your race and the decades. Where was this? Also, I wouldn't call White girls jumping double dutch and/or singing double dutch songs (or any other R&B/Hip Hop songs) for their own entertainment to be cultural appropriation.
I read a book about double Dutch in my reading group at my school and we watch a vid about this after we was done reading the book. They do that fast and on beat🙂
