In the autumn of 1997 we bought a British made DC03 and took out a very cheap insurance. In 2012 the clip on the cyclone broke so we called the insurance. A few hours later we got a call from a Dyson mechanic who was bringing us a new part. He said he would clean it at the same time. And he replaced the motor with a better new one, and the filters and a few other parts. His comment on leaving - 'that should be good for another fifteen years.' The suction is very good compared to the old Hoover it replaced. We love it and have no intention of replacing it. Crazy vid. Loved that as well.
The big problem with old Dysons with the clutch was that the belts would stretch, and then the brushroll would stop turning when used on carpets. The design of the clutch means that changing the belts is a right pain in the bum to do, unless you have the right tools and the know how to dismantle the clutch. Dyson said that if the belts went bad, then the whole clutch had to be replaced as it came with the belts installed and was supposed to be a non user serviceable part. The clutchless models were better as they used one belt that you could easily change when it needed it. I agree about the price of the HEPA filters for the DC03 - too expensive. Its an interesting machine though, I had some fun figuring out how my one worked when I first got it.
I’m stuck with a DC03 Absolute+ I have question about filter care! The outer one (mine both need a clean) the lining of the filter is really dusty where the inner one sits, can I clean off the dust or was this originally like a coating for the filter?
Adam Johnson The grey one isn't mine, so can't do that, and the purple one needs more than just cleaning up sadly. Already started the parts hunt to see how cheaply it can be done
I dislike dysons. I still use my hoover turbo which I bought in 1986. simple machine just change the bag every few months no dust going into the bin the cleaning tools are a fiddle to fit but they do the job. but my carpets look nice when they have been hoovered
To be fair the DC03 is deceptively rubbish compared the others, but their getting old enough to be worth a look every now and again! Good for you still using a Turbopower as a daily, I might do that for a month soon! You thought about refurbishing it after 30 years of daily use?
It's usually new motor time, although if the commutator is clean and tidy you might get away with it. Your probably trying your luck with used brush sets though... Good luck 🤞👍🍀
Hi, thanks for this video. I have one of those that's in great condition. Only the suction for the upright isn't working any longer. If I pull the wand out the suction is great. It sounds like in the video you suggested it's the clutch has gone, can you advise? Thanks
Does the brushroll rotate? If it does and doesn't make a horrible noise the clutch is fine, is the rear suction duct installed properly? Doesn't take much to make a dc03 awful, they've not got much in the first place!
@@beko1987 Thanks for getting back to me. The brush roll doesn't rotate, never has. It does make a strange sound when we try to use it. The toggle between N P D doesn't go into D, it never has since we've had this. We've had this (freecycled) about 8 months with no issues.
It's an awful system :( The clear square bit (with the hose flat, not upright) pushes right into the centre of the floorhead. Then you pivot the hose up and the plastic tabs 'lock' it up into the bottom of the chassis. Add in shitty plastics and 25 years of age and it doesn't always work too well...
Hi where is the thermal cut out switch? I've changed the cord and and the on off switch and still not turning on? Can you offer any suggestions. Thanks in advance
@@beko1987 Hi thanks for responding, only just had a chance to take it apart again, yes power was getting to the motor but it was covered in black dust down there. I happened to have a second hand motor from a DC03 I broke a while ago so fitted this and it's now working 😀 Will have to see how it performs. Thanks for the advice most appreciated
Thank You for this video, I have both of these hoovers, Had them since they were new & Have had absolutely no problems until this afternoon, I use the purple one for upstairs & when I switched it on as per usual the yellow push button thingy on the top it switched on But when I released my thumb off it, It would not stay switched on, So I had to try to hoover whilst holding the button down at the same time so it wouldn't go off, Took me ages to hoover the hall & it's hurt my arm :( Any idea as to why it doesn't stay on? Any info. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. P.S. The date on the sticker is 27/07/1998.
@@beko1987 Thanks so much for replying & the info. Link, I'd kinda guessed it was the on/off switch, I bought a new switch & been trying to fix it, I've only managed to click off the plastic back plate thingy but cannot see any screws or bolts on it, Help !! lol.
Hi! Yes it can be, although you'll need to swap one connector on one of the blue wires to join them together. Then just run the brown live through the switch
Hi, Sorry, It's me again, This morning I was using my grey one upstairs & It accidently got a long piece of frayed carpet thread wound around the end of the roller & made a terrible "clattering" noise so I immediately switched it off at the mains & removed the long piece of carpet thread which I thought would cure the "clattering" noise but it didn't, So I haven't a clue which part inside has been damaged? And if it's repairable or not? Any advice on this is greatly appreciated. Thank You.

In the 1990s the date was written on the ratings sticker. Since then I rely on people who know more than I do and know what year a machine will be due to the shade of plastic etc.
