I bought this as a gift for my friend ru-vid.comUgkxcZqgZ8Ynkiz5n_LxIWRlAicuzmz5kCHG who is just starting out in the world of wood work. He loves it!! There is a great section on different wood and what to use for what kind of job and a similar section for tools as well. The projects in it are things you probably would have a go at with clear instructions, pictures, videos and diagrams throughout. Great for a beginner/amateur wood worker.

Wow! Good job. Interestingly, I’m embarrassed that your video was done 5 years ago and I’m just now seeing it for the first time. I bet you’re even better now than you were then. This is the type of work bench I need to build for my small workshop. This will work great for me. Thanks for the informative video.

Awesome design. I also have a craftsman 3-way flip table...very handy. Note: If you turn the planer 90 degrees, and hinge the roller bed off the side, You will re-gain the fourth flip top for another tool.

I just love watching your videos. You seem to really enjoy figuring out your projects. You are not afraid to crawl on the concrete and get a little saw dust on yourself. You are very good at describing what you are doing and take pride in your work. Regardless of your modesty, many would agree you are one of the best woodworkers on You tube. More importantly you are a perfectionist, an inspiration and a great problem solver.

Thank you VERY MUCH for sharing this video!!!! I do NOT have the space to make the whole flip bench like you did, BUT what I can do with my "factory installed"/work bench is cut out a section from the top of the bench at one end & install a "Flip" section to put a tool or two on have flip them when needed & when not flip them down & have access to my bench top! So, AGAIN, THANK YOU for the idea!!!!

Thanks Bruce! I used 7/8" oak for the dowel. My husband is an engineer and did a rough calculation for me. He said it should take approx. 800 lbs. You could always use metal pipe instead for even more strength. I bet the 2 x 4s would fail before the round dowel does.

@josepherwin8709
@josepherwin8709 5 лет назад
Three things I’d like to suggest. One, look into Forstner bits. Those paddle bits are a pain in the behind. Two, consider using pipe or tubing for your pivot instead of the dowels. They’ll last longer, and you can get away with a smaller diameter, reducing how much material you need to remove to fit them Thereby reducing the chance of a beam failure due to weight/pressure on the pivot point. Three, when you pair tools on a flip bench, try to ensure they’re roughly the same weight on each flip deck. They’ll help each other roll over without being unbalanced. This will reduce the likelihood that you lose control of the deck while turning it over, so you don’t hurt yourself or damage a tool. Great build. I love the concept.

This is inspiring. I have been thinking about doing something like this for a while - my selection of tools to mount is numerically larger and physically smaller, and a couple of them involve fences or sleds on the tabletop, so it won't be just like this. But it'll be something like this.

Cool idea. I was thinking if you put a strip of wood or metal on the top back side of the rotating shelf, it would act as a stop to keep it from over traveling. Then put one on the other end, opposite side to stop against the bottom of the frame. Would make putting the bolt in easier as there would be a positive stop to hold the moving bit against.

I purchased your plans and modified them as my planer is a Dewalt DW735 and is wider than yours so rather than having two 26 x 28 inch shelves, I made mine 28 x 28 inch so the handle would not catch on the 2 x 4 frame. This Dewalt planer weighs 92 pounds so I was a little reluctant to use a wooden dowel so I had an old 1/2 inch pipe clamp so I used the metal pipe instead and It worked fine. I will be building the out-feed rollers next and I have my belt/disc bench sander on the other side and my scroll saw will go on the other side when I figure out the best way to attach it. When you have to share your garage with cars, this Double Ended Flip-Top Workbench saves on floor space. Thanks

Finally, I see a RU-vid video showing someone with the good sense to wear kneepads while working. They ain't pretty, but they save your pants, and your knees. Flip-top tables make sense, too. A flip-top table should include a stop at the far end of the teeter-totter so that when you flip, it hits the stop. Only then do you install a pin to keep the table in place. This will prevent it from accidently flipping over too far, and it makes aligning the pin much easier.

I would get four 1/2" diameter rare earth magnets and recess them flush in the the side where you have the lag bolts that hold the table level - pull the bolt, slide it a fraction of an inch to the magnet; both hands free to turn the table top - and you bolt is right there - no chance of dropping it, cause it inevitably will roll to the dead center of the table on the floor! Murphy's Law. Good build - thinking of doing the same for my Ridgid planer..

Nice idea that worked really well. You do need more awareness with the nail gun though. (Never nail towards a body part!)

Never cut towards yourself either but pulling has more control over pushing, curtain circumstances, it is what it is lol.

My compliments SpikeMoby on saying it with kindness many people forget the wisdom of being kind.

Some use the excuse and say they "have to" but the "have to" won't undo the hospital visit and expense of lost time and wages when things go wrong.

This is a cool build. Thank you! Please, please, please don't wear gloves around rotating machinery. So dangerous! And never point a nail gun toward yourself (or anyone!) Loved the DIY outfeed roller - a lot!

Jason Doust I was going to point out the nail gun pointing concern. Yikes. Three inch nails hurt.

It's scary, I was just out in my workshop looking at doing EXACTLY like this today. Thanks for the tips!

Maybe some counterweight so it wouldn't be so heavy when flipping over.
