My hubby is a handyman. He can fix or make anything. Right now he envies your workshop and all those machines. He is a tool and die engineer. He makes jigs and fixtures and makes tools. That's him. We ate at Denny's for Valentine's Day because neither of us wanted to go to a fancy place that was filled to capacity. We love breakfast for supper. He spent a half hour telling me about how he fixed a part at work. Ha Ha. I guess that's why we have been married for going on 48 years. This was HIS favorite video. Ha Ha. I am using a double screen board snellgrove, to try a save a queen and a cup of bees doing this to help keep them warm off a strong hive, so far it is working

Great video my bees will chew right thru nylon /fiberglass screen ...and hive Beatles go thru hardware cloth so we use Aluminum Screen only ...it works great for us. !!!
I never have issues with bees chewing through the nylon, the screened boards are not on the hives long enough for that to happen. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed

Each bee keeper has to decide for themselves which is the best way for them not only to keep bees, but how to harvest the honey that the bees produce. The more hives a bee keeper has the more they may need to adjust how they gather and process it. For me, I'm still in the process of figuring out which is the best way for me. For cutting screening, I use an industrial strength paper cutter. You can "even" the squares to the cutting edge before dropping the cutting handle. Painter's tape laid out on the top of the cutting board assures consistent cuts, and reduces the scrap. Waste not, want not.

I don't have any bees yet. I have empty hive boxes (new ones) but am a bit late in AZ to buy bees. I may just bait a box as in your video. 50% chance of Africanized types here which would need re-queening.

Just a though, but next time you are cutting that screen, use a sharp knife to cut the roll into appropriate width sections before unrolling it. You'll save a lot of cuts that way.
effectively, I use the pressure regulator but. Even so the bees die. I feel a great regret in my heart, because this time there were many bees that died and I want to find a way to rescue them without harming them. Thanks Mr. Ed.

Through the use of double screened dividing board i think in time there is a possibility that bee colonies could evolve into accepting multiple mated queens.
Ziad Natsheh i dont think you would call that evolution vs a cultural behavior development. It's not like they are physically changing to except multiple queens.
Evolve as in gradual development of a new behavior or mental adaptation. As for physical changes Iv'e heard of an experiment by Asian scientists in which they surgically remove the queens jaw to prevent them from physically harming each other. Not sure how the experiment went but i do believe the idea of multiple mated queens is not far fetched.

The double screened board is only on the hive for a period of 4 to 5 weeks, after that, it is removed because the hives are separated and moved apart, otherwise referred to as a split. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

Mr Ed, I find your equipment how to info to be helpful. I build ventilation boxes with a dish feeder, was using aluminum screen but its hard to work with, going to try the PVC coated pet screen like your double screen boards. Would like to see more wood projects for bees because I was able to make several solid bottom boards with basic equipment. Also made some entrance reducers and attached a plastic mouse guard with shutters as we are under derth.
Mr Jeff, Great Video! I like the window screen also. I tried 1/8" hardware cloth last year, the small Hive beetles would run between the screens to hide.
So glad you liked the video, I hope there was some info that you could use for yourself in it. I use the 1/8 " hardware cloth in all of my screened bottom boards, yes the beetles can get through it, but the mites fall right through it also. Thanks for watching, God's peace. Mr. Ed

Jeff Horchoff that sounds good, most work in winter and relax in summer. It's same by me in table-tennis, most of the games are to play and teams are organized in autumn winter and early spring. After the spring a little paperwork for preparing the new season and then max 3 or 4 month relax and having some free weekends for enjoy the sun and life :) And I hope you'll have a good swarm catch season for refill the empty places in the Abby

They should have 'weights' that are used to hold layers of fabric and and the pattern on that self-healing mat covered table so they can be easily cut out with the rotory cutter. I like you use of clamps but you might want to try the weights to see if it is faster. And I don't ever want to see you use MY rotory cutter to cut screening!

Those cutting mats are amazing, somehow they are self healing so if you manage to cut them (which takes a lot of effort and an incredibly sharp blade) if you let it sit a few minutes it will stitch itself back together and after a while you won't even be able to tell it was cut.. Think someday we will figure out how to do that to skin.. emergency rooms will look very different in those days. It can't come soon enough. I've been watching the bees that have been all over the blooms on our European Ash tree and rosemary lately and they are tiny little things that look like a morph or hybrid. They have really dark abdomens with mostly black bars (some look solid black) but the light bands on them look like a green over silver gold instead of your typical orange/gold honey color. On top of that the fur between and around their wings is a green-grey color. They seem to be less than half an inch long. From my research I think they are a Carnolian hybrid species. They seem pretty docile while collecting pollen but they will buzz if you get a little too close. There must've 50-100 thousand of them in the ash tree last week. I walked outside and there was a huge roar coming from it. Our typical honey bees are over half an inch and the typical orange color. We also get HUGE bumble bees a lot and those little jeweled burrowing ones that like to make their homes inside the stems of roses. It's likely they are from colonies put out to pollinate the local plum/pear/apple orchards that aren't quite in bloom yet. Our house has plenty of food for them right now as we always keep humming bird feeders topped up, a fountain going, and have the ash tree, rosemary, roses, and flowering maples. In a couple months we will also have tomatoes, chrysanthemums, lobelia, pink shamrocks, African violets, irises, tiger lilies, daisies, zucchini, lemons, artichokes, pomegranates, peaches, green beans.. and for the first time this year we will have corn for them to eat on too. Oh and the neighbors also have a HUGE bottlebrush plant on our shared fence line and the bees COVER that thing, much to the happiness of the local fly catcher and phoebes. I think the biggest thing you'd have to worry about having a hive around here is the damn yellow jackets. Those things even make nests in my Bronco all the time, on top of anything they can squeeze into: stacks of pots, the eaves of the house, the neighbor's hedge, the hitch of the boat trailer, the roses out front... anywhere and everywhere.
I hate yellow jackets worse than I hate roaches, and I really hate roaches. In my opinion, they are completely useless but I'm sure God had a good reason for putting them here. Thanks for watching and commenting. God's peace. Mr. Ed

another great video. I do have a question o great one. I seen your video, I believe was last year on vertical splits. So,I had to give it a whirl. I assume I must have missed a detail. As I ended up with two Queenless boxes. Which,was not so good. As that queen would within 24 hrs lay about as many frames as you could cycle through the box. Anyway look forward to the new split video as i have approx 10 that will have to be split by mid April.

Absolutely love these videos of you building sir. That is my other hobby, doing woodworking. I couldn't help but smile at the thought of knowing some woodworkers are cringing at the sight of a pocket hole jig....lol. Some absolutely despise the pocket hole. As a hobby woodworker I love your shop setup. Doing the split like that do you take brood from the bottom and place it in the top one? I'm new to bees. Love your videos. I made some of these this week in preparation for splitting my hives next Spring. Very simple to make with scraps of leftover wood. Do you still use the newspaper along with these screens? Based on how many of these you built a few years ago and now this batch you must have a ton of these ready to go. Woodworking is all about jigs and fixtures, and the better you are at building them, the more successful your project will be. Because the fixtures are only used for a short time, I do not keep them so I can't show them off. You have "explained" dividing boards before but you never explained why you use a mosquito net why not just a solid plank. Do they have to smell the queen or something? Will they move out or something? What will the bees do if you don't use a net?
Yes, they need to share the pheromone as well as the heat for cold nights. A solid board would defeat both of those elements. There are two screens because the bees can not have physical contact, and the separation accomplishes this goal. Thanks for watching and asking. God's peace. Mr. Ed
Do you have to add a queen when you split this way? I would not think they would make one themselves since they could still "smell" the old queen through the screen.......

If the split does not take, remove the double screened divider board and rejoin the hives. No paper is needed, the pheromone is still common to both hives and there will be no fighting. I have done that many times. Glad you like the videos, thnks so much for watching. God's peace Gail. Mr. Ed

@@JeffHorchoff Sorry about that, like on traditional bottom boards there is a 1/2" t0 3/4" spacer around the 3 sides to allow more space under the frames for bee movement.
Jeff, I saw that you recently captured a swarm and you said that you only had one more day to finish these. Are you already beginning to split hives? When do you normally begin? Seems like the time table this year is a bit faster than normal and I don't want to lose a lot of bees to swarming. Great video! Glad you have the patience for that. I did catch a swarm in one of my traps around the beginning of February, but I will not be making splits of our hives at the abbey till mid March. The bees were feeding on the cappings from the comb out of the deadout hives. I got 8 gallons of honey from about 30 frames. Mr. Ed loves honey too. I set 11 swarm traps already, and still have 5 more to go. I'll be finished setting them by Wednesday, nothing like fishing for bees. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed
I'm intrested in one day doing bee keeping myself. However I swell up quite badly just from one sting so I could never work with bees without gear on unlike you and 628DirtRooster.
I'm sorry to hear of your allergic reaction to bee stings, it probably would not be a good idea to keep bees if that is your condition. However, I would suggest a safe compromise, find a bee club in your area and join it. You will meet some very interesting people and learn all about keeping bees in the area you live. I set out 5 swarm traps today, Seeing Dandelions popping up and clover! Less get the bees knows where there at, enough thing else keeping them busy looking any way. he hee there getting to be PESKY~ I had to put up signs WARNING HONEY BEES CROSSING ect. APIS colony flag all sorts of signs PROTECTED BY KILLER BEES

Thank you for your videos. You and Dirt Rooster have really got me interested in bee keeping. I do have a question as to what you use to build your hives. Do you use air dried or kiln dried lumber and reason for it? Thank you.
Weather the wood is kiln or air dried, it still is dried wood which is what you want to use when you build anything. That being said, most of the wood I use is kiln dried. I am so happy to hear that by watching our channels it has peaked your interest in keeping bees. If I may make a suggestion, find a bee club in your area and join it now. You do not need to have bees to belong to a club, just a love for them. You will meet some really great folks who can give you valuable information on keeping bee in the area you live and that is very important. @@JeffHorchoff Thank you for your response. I have done just that. I joined a club close by and will be attending the Alabama bee keepers association annual symposium next month. I've also going to help a friend trap swarms in our area. The reason I ask about klin vs air dried was that I was told by a gentlemen that owns a saw mill that kiln dried would cup or warp more than air dried when exposed to high humidity even if painted. But I guess if you box joint, glue and nail the seams it shouldn't warp or cup too bad.
You are on your way to becoming a bee wrangler yourself, congratulations. Some words of wisdom for you, don't over think every aspect of bee keeping. INTERESTING CONCEPT ! What kind of split is this? I STILL SAY BEE'S GOT MORE THAN 1 PLACE THEY CALL HOME! 2 or 3 places! Cause of population, ITS GOT TO BE SO! To hell with making boxes ect all the time! I'am done with it> ITS LONG BOXES NOW 4 to 8 footers. Can put 5 swarms in a 4 foot long box Thats 6 frames per swarm each. SAVE MY BACK AN TIME!

Th screen is inserted between the two boxes on the same hive in preparation to split the hive and make two hives from one.The purpose of the double screen is to keep the bees from being able to reach each other and not fight. Because the bees share the same queen pheromone, if the queenless hive does not produce a queen cell, the hives can be reunited and the bees will not kill each other. It is a very useful tool. Double screened boards are used to split the bee hives, and used for only a few weeks and then removed. Single screened boards are the permanent board that the hive is placed on. God's peace Dawn. Mr. Ed
Why double screen ?... isn't one screen enough ?...and what screen are you using, not metal, looks like mosquito fabric screen to me, wouldn't the bees chew thru it ?... Thanks for your reply.
The use of double screens is so the bees can not come in contact with each other when I do a vertical split. Because the boards are only used for a few weeks at most, mosquito screen works just fine. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

They do not chew through the screen, but they will put wax on it. The longest the screen stays on the hive is about 4 to 5 weeks, then I split the hive. More on that later. God's peace Paul. Mr. Ed
