I show how to double wrap handlebar tape on a road bike for more padding over rough terrain. This is a common technique for races like Paris Roubaix where they are racing over cobbles. The bar tape that I used was Specialized Super Cork Bar Tape as it stretches well without fear of tearing or breaking.

After watching this I went to home depot and found some pipe insulation foam. Normally it surrounds a pipe, but I cut it so that I could provide additional cushion to the area of the handlebars where the nerves of my hand make contact. So, I ended up only using one-quarter of a complete wrap, stuck it on with mirror-mounting tape, and then wrapped around that with handlebar tape. Thank you very much RJ for giving me the idea.

Wouldn't it help to leave the cables out of the bar wrap so the bars remain round and give a smoother grip - like on a vintage 10 speed?

I actualy use a old inner tube instead of 2 sets of bartape. It works perfectly!

Simon , I agree with you . Two tapes will make the handlebar almost two inches wide . I currently have an inner tube I cut down the middle and use only one thickness of rubber as a base.

I did the same but only in the straight section, near to the break levers. It works perfectly.

the best wrap i have used and still using is lizard skin bar tape, it has the best grip with a little padding to it. its around 50 dollars but its well worth the price check it out. and to point out i do most of riding in the rain, i was shocked that the bar tape had a natural water repellent factor to it. the bar tape is not waterproof.

I agree but some study suggest gloves don't help as much as tape. I don't know, I saw it on GCN

You can use whatever you want. I don't know how well it work.

Just buy some thick DSP tape. Double tape will slide all over the place and will come undone soon.

Sram supercork has adhesive backing, so that might help hold it in place.

+spybot2d You're probably right that double tape will be more prone to coming undone in the long run, but this technique makes sense for short-term benefit (specific races, just like RJ mentions in the video). Pros who do this have their bars re-wrapped all the time. For a commuter bike or someone who just doesn't want to re-wrap their bars frequently then a different approach may make more sense.
