Bear in mind that crazy fast cars were in the 5-6 sec 0-60 mph range at the time. So this car, which did the run in the high 7's, was a legitimately quick car. I had an early Mazda R100 and an RX3, both had buzzers that sounded at 7000 RPM to keep you from over revving it, this was before electronic engine controls that keep that from happening today. The oil consumption was due to the car pumping a bit of oil into the carb to mix with the gas to lubricate the tip seals, it was just something you lived with and not a bother at all.

Thanks Jay and Doug. In defense of the rotary, Every RX7 2nd gens I have ever bought that had a blown engine had leaves, sticks, dirt, etc, clogging the space between the oil cooler and radiator, allowing the oil to cook and blow the seals.

A friends fathers 1st gen did 100k on a set of seals, so its possible for them to last a long time if taken care of. Still has the car 84-23

I guess rx7s are so expensive now, people don't put miles on them anyway so whatever. you can still go buy an rx8 though for not rediculous prices but. 8500 for a 70,000 mile example... it's probably almost time to rebuild

The Pajero is absolutely awesome! Rode in one before and loved it! I'd like to add in that it's not really oil consumption in the sense that it 'burns' oil. It uses oil by design to lubricate the rotor housings so the seals on the rotors move along smoothly and don't take extreme wear. Even then, it doesn't guzzle oil. It's just something that needs to be checked from time to time and oil added in when needed. No big deal!
