Presentation given by Doug Engelbart (introduced by Charles Irby) at the ACM Conference on the History of Personal Workstations, held at Rickey’s Hyatt House in Palo Alto, California, on January 9 and 10, 1986. The conference was sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and hosted by the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC).

I felt as though humanity lost one of its exponents, when Doug died. When Ted gave his eulogy, I found myself bawling...because he was right.

I thought modern computing started at Xerox PARC, but now I realize that Doug was the visionary behind most of the concepts they were working on. And his group conceived modern computing as we know it. Amazing! I would like to learn more about the hardware they used in 1968. It would seem to be prohibitively expensive.

Even then, they put three buttons on that mouse, while apple still persists with one-button + "ctrl+click" nonsense... So much that has yet to be fully realised too.
