Doug's cameo was the highlight of the episode for me. It was simultaneously a scathing indictment of the current state of RU-vid and a love letter to the creators that paved the way for commentary on all fronts.
absolutely, I feel like Spoony and Linkara still pretend it's 2013 and they're too good for Oney back when they were on Blip and Oney was some bum on newgrounds. Now the tables have turned right. I'm glad Doug has such a good heart about it.
As much shit as we all give Linkara for his attitude towards Oney and friends jabbing at him, I would holler if the Smiling Friends were saved by the Lightbringer and it was played by Linkara, himself. Such a shame.
Funny thing is they never actually said anything bad about him, only did impressions and put him in a hypothetical to which they even do to each other.
I love that Zach finally got to formally work with Doug on something, and it’s his own TV show. I’m proud of that little gremlin and him opening the door for so many of his friends and peers to get into mainstream animation/TV. :’)
Everytime it's a different cliche RU-vidr ad like Raid Shadow Legends or Raycon earbuds and the video is slightly longer but still mostly just the ad...
Not only did they bring one of the OGs of the platform, but his cameo was basically roasting the current state of youtube. Zach may be a funny gremlin man but he's such a respectful creature
I also appreciate that the joke wasn't at Doug's expense, but moreso the state of RU-vid as a whole. His cameo was perfectly done and it made me give a big green smile seeing him on the show.
The fact that Doug, regardless of all the critiques, all the criticism, all the shit slung his way, he remains stalwart and respectable in the face of jokes. After all the years, he really is a cooler head and a pretty normal guy than you'd think. Commendable man. Truly.
For sure. And while I'm not a big fan of his Nostalgia Critic character these days, when he's just talking to the camera and being himself reviewing a movie, he's still great to watch.
Doug has always been like this. I think a lot of people think those nostalgia critic rants are actually him. He’s always been pretty chill even if a lot of shit he used to put out is cringe
I remember punching my desk in joy when I saw Doug in the episode and hurting my hand. I know Zach and friends are pretty big long-lasting fans of Channel Awesome which makes it all the more amazing
''Fans'' is a strong word 😂 they're not fans of Dougs in the same way that people are fans of Anime or Star Wars, closer to how people are fans of ''The Room'' by Tommy Wiseu. It's an ironic love.
@@danculbert6349 I honestly don't think so. Over the years they've all shown varying degrees of influence he had on their early styles of humor. Chris and Zach are the obvious ones but it is clear that they have a genuine respect for Doug. Especially noted when Chris flat out said at one point "The quaility of the videos don't really matter; putting out a fully scripted, acted, editied sketch/review nearly every week for close to a decade is really impressive."
@@laughterable ''the quality of the videos don't really matter'' says it all 😂 Also none of the humour in Dougs nostalgia critic reviews is anything like the humour in Smiling Friends. Put it this way, I don't think Zach Hadel is sitting down to watch a new NC video and genuinely laughing at the jokes unironically or finding the film criticism insightful.
Doug is a shining beacon of how to not take lighthearted ribbing too personally, especially when the people doing the ribbing obviously love your work to the point they think about you a lot.
I don't think they unironically love his work. I don't think they watch his reviews and laugh at the jokes or find his commentary insightful, I think they just find him goofy and corny the same way most people do.
@@danculbert6349 Nah Chris, Cory, and Zach at the very least know too much about obscure channel awesome lore to not have been fans when they were younger.
I love how Doug can handle being made fun of a little, especially considering his career was based on making fun of stuff, unlike a certain lightbringer.
Doug being a good sport, and supportive of Zach, Mike, and Oneyplays in general is getting him massive W's. Guy knows how to take a joke, especially he makes them so often. Smiling Friends in general really feels like a love letter to the internet age of NG and early youtube not only in comedy but also the spirit. Between Zach and Chris being involved naturally, but also the cameos and artists who are working on the show itself. Twitter being a huge boon where artists are posting which scenes they worked on openly so everyone can see and appreciate it all. It really feels like one big effort made between the animators/actors that feels really heartwarming.
linkara getting over himself and showing some amiability with the oney crew would be such an amazing career booster for him. i feel like the energy and affection oney would frequently show towards the nostalgia critic breathed a bit of fire into doug's internet presence, and doug returning it kept that momentum. now the nostalgia critic has a full speaking cameo in this amazing cartoon and he'll have that under his belt forever. this was linkara's chance to network and he really dropped the ball.
it’s nice that jokes on the internet and poking a stick at someone hasn’t resulted in overly dramatic beef for once, and instead made something amazing by not taking it all to heart!
Dougs a good example of how being good natured towards jokes about you can benefit. Oney plays has made hundreds of nostalgia critic jokes and unlike some of his contemporaries Doug understand that they were just in good fun and maintained a good relationship with them. Despite it all, he’s still Doug
0:02 "Okay, Daniel, I mean, doug." Lol, i love how the latest episode of Smiling doug becoming a gag character that the internet is now obsessed with the mistake Daniel instead of doug.
The thing with Oneyplays and their riff and "mockery" on Nostalgia Critic and Linkara is that if you think about it, you'd have to really follow the two acts and care enough to dig deep to imitate and make fun of them in the first place. In other words, Oneyplays crew have watched both a lot to be able to draw up so many material to make fun of. It's understandable that you might take offense to the mockery, but you also realize they spent a lot of time watching and following your content to be able to formulate said mockery.
I remember I got spoiled about Doug's appearance on Smiling Friends but I was so surprised because I'm just amazed with all the internet creators that Zach and Mike get to be in episodes of Smiling Friends!
you just know that if Chris Chan got to be on Smiling Friends, even as that Grease Puddle, the first thing he'd do is blab about it to the world, Doug had to keep this a secret for a LONG time, Chris chan would not be able to.
thanks for doing it and thanks for keeping it a secret, the moment I saw charlie go on youtube I had a feeling something good was coming but I wasn't quite expecting what we got
Imitations are always the sincerest form of flattery. They clearly both find nostalgia critic a little cringe but endearing and it helps that Doug is semi removed from that, it’s a character buts it’s himself and I believe he was a great sport!!
I remember them doing impressions making fun of Doug, Doug taking it like a chanp by laughing at how good the impression was, and them praising him for being such a good sport about it later. Nice to see how it turned out for everyone in the end.
The moment that Doug appeared in Smiling Friends was in 2 stages. 1- I was like "Oh sh*t, they got Critic in the show lol", and enjoyed the episode And 2- Oh boi. After watching the show, I went to see if "You know who" commented on Doug being in the show as a cameo. Obviously they were salty, well some of them, even the Lightbringer. And Funny enough, one of them said that she enjoyed watching Smiling Friends. Well Enjoyed until she saw Doug in the Episode. Then I saw a lot of salty comments on those people on social media lol.
And to think, this is what Linkara missed out on. A little humility could've gotten him in Smiling Friends canon. 😅I'm so happy to see Doug appear on the show after that positive little dynamic they had over the Oneyplays jokes.
Now, when you say "live" Do you mean when it aired cos obviously you can't show a cartoon "live", that's impossible. Like when it aired on Sunday 26th of May, do you mean like that?
@@Alec_Reaper Didn't realise this was a competition to one up whether you saw a cartoon "live" first. Which is impossible because cartoons can't be shown "live".
Wow all the way back in January last year that's a wild 😂 wow animation takes a long time! 🤯❤ So glad he did it though! Best Cameo in the entire series so far!
"I did some improv, but it probably sucked..." I don't watch Doug's content anymore, (I just stopped finding it entertaining) but I will admit that his humility and wholesome relationship with other content creators does make me more willing to at least consider him one of the "good ones" on youtube.
@@FilmFlab wait really? Folks were saying that was a lie and that it was Zach you played the devil. I mean, Satan sounds like Zach instead of James. I'm so confused. What is the truth?
There actually WAS a period where he didn’t like the Oneyplays guys, but I think over time (unlike linkara, lol) he realized the teasing came from an ultimately harmless place, and kinda also a place of respect. Even when they rag on him, people like Julian and DingDong would still say that there were reviews of his that were legitimately good, they just found his approach in a lot of other ones missed the mark. But they’ve always admitted that he’s good at reviewing things when he does more research, and doesn’t try so hard to overanalyze and overreact.
Not sure where you heard he didn’t like them, but it is believable as most people reactions at first tend to be “They’re mocking me? How dare they!” And yes, sometimes it is hard to tell the difference loving teasing and hate-filled jabs. But from what I’ve seen, it really is nothing to get angry over, and seems ultimately like harmless fun. In other words, good on Doug for not making Oney his enemies.
The way Doug has handled oneyplays has made me respect him he can take a joke and realize that some making some jokes is different than some one bashing you caues they hate you I hope Doug the best in his career and life
I literally only know Doug as the guy who does/did that super cringey internet show, and yet anytime I happen to see a video of him out of character, he's such a chill charming dude. Very few people can take a joke to the degree this guy can. Really respect him.
Personally I think people need to get it in their heads that just bc someone is bad as a businessman or a boss that doesn't make you a monster, you're just bad at those things as are most people. I don't think there is any malice in most of the things this guy stands trial for, but people like seeing everything in black and white.
I still find it funny how Linkara was trending on twitter for a while JUST because people wont stop shitting on him hating OneyPlays while Doug was willing to take the jabs to the chin and not let the insults get to him. Which now ended up with him appearing on national television.
Were all these podcasts just taken down? I saw the most recent one (6-20) on my RU-vid main page, but I clicked on something else intending to get to it later. Now I want to play it so I can have it on in the background as I work, but now I can't find it. Everything I tried in the search box doesn't get me the most recent or any of Heather's interviews with Doug. The only thing I could find was this clip. Did they all just disappear? If not, what exactly do I need to type in the search box to find them?
They’re still there, if you go to the channel awesome channel & look through the most recent uploads you’ll find them named “Doug Q&A” they go back a few weeks
It's stuff like this that made stop making fun of people online (unless they did something really terrible or hypocritical). People can and have pointed out Doug's flaws on RU-vid at his expense. People can call him cringe. But that hasn't stopped him from trying to move up in this world. And here's an example of that.
Doug's separated himself pretty majorly from the character of Nostalgia Critic, people respect that he has that self-awareness. Unlike some other internet people in the same vein.
From poking fun at the Nostalgia Critic (and it is all in good fun) to actually having Doug himself on the show, that's quite a journey And on top of that, Doug got to be on TV, so that's also very nice, just a big W all around
Man remember when everyone thought doug hated oneyplays? I smiled sooooo wide seeing him in smiling friends and best part is his character was sooooo natural and i could totally see the demon hunter in a nostalgia critic video
I loved that technically doug and james rolfe were in the same episode. So its kinda like the old NerdxCritic collab vids in a way. Hats off to ya doug. Musta been hard to keep it a secret.
I cant stand the nostalgia critic videos, but doug is such a chill dude. Hes a man who made a living off of having fun with his friends making dog shit content, i would honestly love to have a beer with him.
