I love this review because my store still has these same older offerings before Laing renamed The Oyster to Rock Island. I was enjoying the Rock Oyster and Timorous Beastie yesterday. I still have a half bottle of the Big Peat...I know I can replace the Rock Oyster and they have the Scallywag...Your vids are perfect for me. I did the head to head Big Peat vs Peat Monster last year...I love both companies so much...

Nice review guys. Love the Big Peat, the standard is Ardbeg, Bowmore, Caol Ila & a little Port Ellen (which closed in 1983, so I'm guessing there isn't too much!). The 2016 Christmas like you mentioned features every single Isla distillery, can't wait to try it!

What did you think of the 2023 Big Peat? I found it to be damn fabulous with 4 of my favourite Islay peated scotch whiskies making up this delicious expression!! Let me know guys!! $115 Canadian plus 15% tax on top for provincial, federal and an alcohol tax. Damn taxes! What's your tax rate in your State in the U.S.? I wish I had connections just to learn from with reps from paces like Douglas Laing! That sounds amazing! Happy Near Year Bart and Scott and I genuinely hope it's full of excellent health, loads of fun, tons of happiness and love!! Oh and I hope you both have some amazing drams of single malt scotch in 2024!! I am 2 years into my scotch journey with some good Bourbon and Rye thrown in and it's fabulous!! My husband and I are going to Scotland again in 2024 to explore more distilleries and Lagavulin, Bunna, Ardbeg and others will be on the list. We did them last time and Bunna was spectacular - but I am such a peat head! Yes women love peated whisky too! We are looking forward to visiting! Jackie at Ardbeg is about as kind and fun as someone can be! I think visiting the distilleries in person is essential to learning about single malt scotch - essential. So much is gained. Cheers!! 🙂P.S. I have read in reputable journals that the palette can only register so much peated whisky and once a scotch goes above about 65-70 ppm nothing else is experienced - the palette is essentially exhausted!! Do you guys have any thoughts on this? I am in psych/science so this really interests me - my day job!! Peace!

First we know several peat heads that are women so we agree with you. We even had one lady on the show that smelled peat from across the bar. Loved it walked up to the guy and demanded to know what he was drinking. Tried it and was an instant peat head. Look at some of our 16 bottle peat shootouts (play list). While doing that the peat all fell away into the background and we could pick out lots of subtle flavors. Very interesting experience.

Great review as always. Douglas Laing also have a blended Islay malt in their range called Clan Denny (46.7%) which is a mix of all the big gun Islays. Serge Valentin gave this 90/100 and it costs less than £40. I have a bottle and prefer it to Big Peat. They also do a limited expression called Yula (52.6) which is a 20+ year Islay blend. The packaging is fantastic. Not opened my bottle. The cask strength Rock Oyster and Big Peat expressions are reputedly very young. Happy Christmas Dummies. WT

Thanks for the reviews on these. I had to order mine online. Couldn't find any in SC. I paid $56 for Big Pete, $60 for Rock Oyster and Timorous Beastie, $70 for Scallywag and $80 for the 2016 Christmas Big Peat. I have received all but the Christmas Big Peat. LOL at the chubocabra telling you guys it was time to "scotch it". Merry Christmas Dummies!

I had the Big Peat while watching your review. The rest are still sealed. I agree that Big Peat is similar to Compass Box Eleuthra and Peat Monster. It acts more like a peat in an aged whiskey and the sweetness works well with the smoke. I agree that it is an earthier peat than you find in Lagavulin or Laphroaig which tend to taste more ashy. Not better, just different (maybe more refined?). Glad to have it. I'm definitely a peat-head like Bart.

Enjoying TÉ BHEAG NAN EILEAN ( Chay Vee ug or Vig Nan Ill on) Little Taste of the Island. TÉ BHEAG is a colloquial phrase. Friday overnight had 1-3 inches of Snow Which Turned to Rain as Temps rose into the 50s. Sunday will be Rain with Temps in the High 50s. So it was a Peated Whisky Night. A Peaty Blend from the Isle of Skye Scottish Gaelic: An t-Eilean Sgitheanach (An Till on Skaw hahk) The Isle of Skye gets its name from a legendary Irish warrior-queen by the name of Scáthach, ( Skaw hahk) whose name means "Shadowy One." Scáthach ran a warrior training school on the island, and two of her most famous students were Cuchulainn and his best friend, Ferdiad (whom he would eventually slay in battle)... Scáthach's very name is shared in common with her predecessor and namesake, the legendary wife of Milesios, mother of the Milesian Gaels, and the first of the Gaelic conquerors of Ireland to die upon Irish soil...Her sons, their clansmen and descendents thereafter called themselves Scathí (Scotti) in honor of her, the foremother of the Irish people... Roman geographers of the time would take note of this, and identify Ireland on maps as Scotia (Land of the Scotti), though it did not take hold, the older names of Ierne and Hibernia (Land of Winter) being preferred. When the Irish spread into Alba, that land too was renamed Scotia, and this time it took, giving rise to the modern name of Scotland....The name Scáthach is actually Scythian in origin (Skythai), and denotes an eastern Mediterranean element to the Celtic invasions of Ireland.. Hope this helps! Irish mythology is my hobby :ja: From Irish Translations.com Since the Scottish and Irish share a common ethnicity and related language, much of the basic mythology is shared as well or known of by both the Irish and the Scottish. Indeed the word Scottish devices from the Latin Scotti which the Romans used to refer to both the people of present day Scotland and Ireland. MIKE

what did you think of the Big Peat?
@foodquig
@foodquig 7 лет назад
Delicious! The layers of smoke from Ardbeg and Caol Ila move aside to give a strong burst of citrus mixed with molten asphalt, followed by dry ashes... I was astounded to find that there's some Port Ellen in it. That hasn't been distilled since 1983! The local price has recently jumped from the $90 range to $143. Expect it to go up some more as remaining stocks of Port Ellen are used up. It's also becoming harder to find. Even though I like it, I will probably not be buying it again. I can't justify paying more for it than what I pay for the likes of Port Charlotte Scottish Barley.

Not sure if I shared my BOWMORE 12 Notes with you two; SO Here they are: BOWMORE 12 Y.O. 40% ABV Let it Sit for about 15 minutes COLOR: Dark Gold with a nice Ring around the glass. Small Legs moving Slowly. NOSE: A Rich Sense; a Pleasant Brine mixed with Licorice. A touch of Peat Smoke in the Background. A Rich sweetness pervades. PALETTE: A Medium Rich Oily Mouth Feel, Sweet Malt Arrival with hints of Licorice, some light Spice on the tongue, but not enough to kill the Creamy Sweetness. Peat Rises as I swirl it around yet it does not overwhelm the sweet notes. A Bit of Lemon drop candy faintly in the Background. FINISH: A Medium Peat Smoke rises yet there are sweet notes of Lemon around it. A Touch of Pepper on the Tongue. Drying with Lightly Sweet Peat Smoke filling my Mouth. Hints of Rich Licorice and Lemon Remain. This is a Well Balanced Whisky to my Tastebuds. The various elements come out at different times and combine well. My first Scottish Whisky was BOWMORE Small Batch about a year ago and I wanted to experience the 12 Y.O. I was not disappointed. I enjoy the medley of Flavor that is well balanced.
