I bought both the Douglass Field S and the Field L lighters. I compare the two, as well as a waterproof solution using the common Zippo lighter. Also mentioned is the Peacock 24 hour hand warmer which runs on the same lighter fluid, and can be lit with any of these 3 lighters.
I am not an "affiliate youtooober". I made this video out of kindness, not to make money.

Thanks for posting this Mark. It's interesting and informative. I love petrol lighters. I'm more of a Zippo guy but I appreciate all designs. Great video.

It was fun to make! Glad you found it useful. I watched a dozen videos before I bought them. I just also got the Zippo branded butane insert for one of my Zippos. I have no idea why I'm on a lighter binge.

I'm on a bit of a binge too. I'm not a serious collector. I have 10 or 12 Zippos that I've collected over the years. When I'm out and about I'll pick one up if it seems interesting to me. Lately I've been into Zorro brand lighters. They're Chinese knock offs of Zippo, Carson, Douglas, IMCO etc but are surprisingly good quality. They have their own designs too and have some interesting engraving etc. Collecting lighters is a fun hobby for me and not terribly expensive unless you chase the genuine vintage models...🤔 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--lh1BUz5BrY.html

What I love about my field s lighter is that when somebody asks me for a fire, they can never light it up! 😆

For about 10.00 you can get a Zippo fuel tank that hold fluid, an extra flint and a little tool to unscrew the flint screw.

You gotta blow out the barrel windshield before you light it when its soaked. Blow it out really good and she'll light everytime. BUT.....as you said.....Its a low burning flame and not good for camp.

L is the way to go. The S is a pain in the ass.

As far as your burn.. you’ve got to repack your cotton and check your wick. With the proper fuel sucking wick and good cotton pack they will burn like a zippo flame. You’ve got a choke point going on. Be it from the maker or not it should burn non stop. I’ve used diff wicks and cotton etc, the wick from the maint pack is best. And any pure non bleached cotton is best. Like vape cotton etc. pull your cotton out, hold your wick in place and repack some fresh cotton trying to keep your wick in the center. Tuck the tail of the wick in and fill er up.

Great review! I find that my Douglas L lighter needs refuelling after two days. Is the same case for you?

I haven't used either extensively. Just took a week long camping trip with them and defaulted back to my zippo. It has a much bigger flame, which I need for lighting my handwarmers. The S lit after a week, but not the L. A zippo with a small bottle of fuel taped to it is much simpler, cheaper and more reliable. If you want a pretty conversation starter, and you smoke...the L might be worth the money. Not sure how often you'd have to fill it. Neither S nor L is a miracle lighter. I wouldn't buy them again.

The douglass field s is beautiful but a complete piece of crap. My lighter busted after 3 months. It won't even spark. It needs special expensive flints from japan. All hype. Douglass customer service is especially non-existent.

Thanks for the comment. I was surprised by my Field S. I had lost track of where it was. I found it in my oil painting box where I keep it to soften stuck tube lids. It lit after about 6 months in storage. I got over my lighter obsession.

@markhwebster that's probably all it's good for. It's not a good "Daily driver" . Special tools to fix it and you need douglass Flint. This thing is finicky as hell. I'm a bit of a collector as well.

I have the field s lighter. It’s a complete piece of crap. Zippo is leaps and bounds better then the these Douglas lighters. My advice is do not buy these things. You will not be happy. If you want a GOOD and RELIABLE lighter…..spend the money and get a Dunhill rollagas. Otherwise just stick with the zippo. You cannot beat it.

How long does the fluid last in a zippo? Couple of days?
@lifesalessonullrnwhnurthru4141
@@allantaylor606 Fuel will last a week to 9 days right now. So yes I agree that the fuel is the big issue with the zippo. No question. But the flame and the striking wheel are just terrible on the Douglass. If I don’t light my joint within the first 3 secs of flame, forget it. It’s either too hot to hold or the flame has died down to barely a usable slight blue flame. And that’s if I can light it. Takes 3-42 strikes of the wheel to light the damn thing. Anyways. I don’t keep my zippo in my pocket so the butane doesn’t evaporate super quick. It just sits on my chair and so the fuel lasts 7-9 days easy in the summer and about 3 weeks in the winter when it’s cold. I want a Dunhill rollagas but have a hard time with the price.

@@lifesalessonullrnwhnurthru4141 I've got a zippo and I want to love it. It's an iconic American design which has been with us "forever". However I fill it with petrol and it evaporates in a week. The design isnt fit for purpose... the rollagas is an awesome looking lighter. However the best lighter of all is probably a bic..
@lifesalessonullrnwhnurthru4141
@@allantaylor606 lol. Ya you’re so right. I have bics everywhere. I use the left over flint from a bic for my zippo.
