Could you do some testing on the updm series d3 sound amplifiers new power supplies
@booobtooober

I just listened to a review of this amp on the Forever Analog channel and the one thing I'd like to point out is that he showed a huge volume gain using XLR inputs. I would presume roughly a doubling of power, as he does not use any testing equipment. Also to note is that the TI 3255 is actually a pro sound amp chip so I just say it likes the higher input level better than RCA.
@JohnAudioTech
@JohnAudioTech 3 месяца назад
The amplifier might have 6dB more gain with the XLR inputs, however that does not change its max output power as the clipping point remains the same.

@danrussell9357 3 месяца назад
Thanks for the review. I think the balanced inputs, as well as the meters, give it more of a pro audio look. I would be curious if using XLR would make the amp louder when connected to a larger power supply.
@MichaelBeeny
@MichaelBeeny 3 месяца назад
You will get more gain from the XLR input 6dB in fact, but this has nothing to do with the power supply. The larger power supply will offer more output power but at normal listening levels will make zero difference. The sound quality and overall gain will be the same.

Amazing ! they just can't help themselves, the Bloody manual says THD 0.008% nothing more, no @ anything, so where did that number come from ? that sort of BS puts me right off great review John....cheers.
@Douglas_Blake_579
@Douglas_Blake_579 3 месяца назад
Note that the spec is for THD ... not THD+Noise ... the chip can do .008% at about 50% power... but that is ignoring the noise floor.

Few class D amplifiers have low THD. If you want low THD you need to go class AB. You get what you pay for.

i got a bru5 sure /wondom i love it and the thing has a DSP in it and software is free if you go to archive and get it also blutooth 5.0 with external antaneY ;} all so i bought their DSP with the stigma studio chip in it i ant played with it yet but a am sure its a sweet deal. i need to rig up sumthing to test mine i swear it seems louder than 90 watts / same chip set

The relatively weak supplied power supply seems to be a common issue with most of these inexpensive chip amp units. Unfortunately, a proper power supply can end up costing more than the amp unit itself! So most end up shipping something that works but doesn't allow the amp to be pushed super hard. That being said I have seen other good reviews of Douk Audio gear and it's good to see this amp seems to be a good unit as well!
@MichaelBeeny
@MichaelBeeny 3 месяца назад
The power supply, makes or breaks ANY amplifier. It's like a car, low power engine, low performance car. Likewise, the power supply makes all the difference, but it is probably the most expensive item, so away to cut costs is use a simple or lower power PSU. Cheap always means compromise. With amplifiers that usually means, poor heatsinking and power supplies.

I'm using a Douk DAC and have really liked it so far. I moved house and don't have a spot for my hifi junk yet so set up a smaller system to listen to music in the mean time. My normal DAC/disc player cost A LOT more than this little $50 Douk but I'm really happy with my temporary setup. I've been into hifi since the 80's and I never would have believed how nice of a system you could put together for so little money these days.

They should have given left right independent volume controls instead of that balance control IMO.
@Krmpfpks
@Krmpfpks 3 месяца назад
I am not sure about that… then you have to adjust two knobs just to turn down the volume …
@MichaelBeeny
@MichaelBeeny 3 месяца назад
With independent pots you can never find the real balance, you could be 3-6dB off depending on your ears.
@Krmpfpks
@Krmpfpks 3 месяца назад
@@MichaelBeeny I think you can find good enough balance just by ear - after all if it sounds right to you it is good enough. But you’ll have to balance whenever you adjust the volume, that would bother me big time and probably many casual listeners too. Don‘t know about the OP‘s skills in handling volume controls, maybe for some this comes natural.
@Douglas_Blake_579
@Douglas_Blake_579 3 месяца назад
The first version of this had dual volume controls ... no surprise, people couldn't figure that out... 🤔
@Douglas_Blake_579
@Douglas_Blake_579 3 месяца назад
Hi John... there is a volume control and input level issue with this amplifier. It is exposed here... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-F-ZEgN7uRo4.htmlsi=_Shv_8dQG6i5Lp2U And yes ... the power bricks they give us with these amplifiers are woefully inadequate. The TPA3255 mini-amps seem at their best around 36volts with a 10 amp supply.
@electronicwaves
@electronicwaves 3 месяца назад
You should check it with a 48V psu to find the real capabilities of the amp
@MichaelBeeny
@MichaelBeeny 3 месяца назад
With 48 volts, if driven hard can result in overheating and cutting out, especially into 4 ohms. Most of these cheap amplifiers have poor ventilation or even no ventilation at all. About 36 volts is a good safe voltage.
@Douglas_Blake_579
@Douglas_Blake_579 3 месяца назад
As Michael points out, because of poor thermal solutions and marginal power supplies these little guys do best at 36 volts. I run my TB10D from a 36v 10 amp supply and it sounds amazing. No cutouts or shutdowns... like you would get at 48 volts.
@electronicwaves
@electronicwaves 3 месяца назад
@@Douglas_Blake_579 I have an aiyima A07 with the same class D IC, I ran it for hours on 48V and as loud volumes as I could tolerate and I couldn't get the amp to shut down due to thermal protection and the metal case just became warm to the touch
@Douglas_Blake_579
@Douglas_Blake_579 3 месяца назад
@@electronicwaves I believe that. But you need to understand that a heat sink in a fully enclosed casing isn't a cooling device ... it's a heater. The inside of that amplifier would be considerably hotter than the outer casing... and given that the heatsink's purpose is largely defeated it is likely the chip is hotter still. The A07 or any of it's cousins will shut down if pushed hard enough. I didn't say it is wrong to use the 48 volt supply. I simply pointed out, as many others have affirmed, that 36 volts 10 amps is the best compromise between heat and performance.

to my ears (4:30) the device has poor "hies" but we will see in a few moments. Yeap ! my ears still functioning correctly (9:46) . Anyway I don't like class-D even if they are "good looking". As anytime, your review is fair.
