Dovetail Tomahawk

Making a dovetail tomahawk from scrap. Inspired by rare examples of steel and brass pipe tomahawk, exchanged as diplomatic gifts between Europeans and Native Americans.
I don't pretend this to be functional. It's made for the challenge of making it and as art piece more than an actual work hatchet. It can still chop stuff and seems to hold up well, but of course it has nothing to do with a proper one made entirely of steel.
I'll do my best to answer questions in comments and I'll add the most frequent one here:
0:00 Steel Edge
3:27 Pattern
5:30 Brass Cast
7:47 Head
10:37 Handle
13:09 Test

Simply gorgeous. While I know it is largely decorative, watching you cast the brass made me wonder how the heat of the brass would affect the hardness of the steel.

Well, he didnt temper the steel (at least not on video), to i think he relied on the brass to temper the edge
@davidkbailey
@davidkbailey 3 года назад
@@HvV8446 That's part of what has me curious. Brass melts at something like 1700*F. As I understand it, chopping blades are usually tempered to around 450*F. Pouring 1700*F brass into the mold would likely cause the steel to heat to a level that, once cooled slowly in the mold, would essentially just anneal the steel.
@HvV8446
@HvV8446 3 года назад
@@davidkbailey yeah, i dont know how else he can do that, its the only thing i can think of. But then again, it was only pine. I bet that if he used it on hardwood it will have dents in it in no time. Btw, im european, therefore i prefer the (easier) method of measuring temperature with celcius 🙂, only when its -40 i dont care anymore

@@HvV8446 Yeah, sorry about the Fahrenheit. My blacksmithing books don't even include metric equivalents. For length and volume, I can work pretty well in both metric and US Customary. I have never been able to get my head around Celsius, though. Who knows why. . .

You need to press the sand down with more force. The first layer on your workpiece should be pressed with your fingers. All the layers above should be pressed with a tool. Then you need to make holes in the sand to prevent steamexplosions. Regards 👍

As a collector of Tomahawks, that is one fine looking hawk. And very accurate. Hardened steel was hard to come by back in that day and age. So you only used as much as you needed. Just for the cutting edge. I have one that has a hardened steal edge and softer iron, that is then wrapped around the hardened steel, in what was called a plowshare design. Its been a good hawk for me, for years. Keep up the good work.

The pits seem to be where the melted brass was surrounded on three sides by cold steel. I suspect the brass cooled rapidly in those pits and shrunk when it hardened. I could be wrong about the shrinking but two vents in those precise places might have prevented it. I bet there's a fair amount of trial-and-error in production casting to sort out these types of issues.

Brass melts at about 800 celcius. Tempering of most hardened steel at about 200 celcius. So yeah the hardness is pretty much gone. Stil a cool design. Maybe a edge quench would work. With the rest wrapped in wet cloth or something.

Because, she was beheaded with a long sword, by a headsman from France. Venting the sand mold and creating a large well to pour into would help. The vents would help the metal not “boil over” when displacing the foam, and having a larger amount of brass would force the metal into the mold as well as prevent any shrinking within the mold.

between a belt sander and a good forge, you can pretty much turn any scavenged metal into true treasures, well done. thank goodness for so many useful cutting machines. -any tips and tricks for manually drilling the initial straight hole into metals without higher end machines? still trying to learn that art thanks.

@KikinCh1kin
@KikinCh1kin 2 года назад
Most likey, brass does melt somewhere around 900 celsius and steel tempering usually takes place somewhere 175-300 celsius. It probably didnt ruin the temper but it probably made the steel softer unless he tempered it again of camera.

Why did you bother hardening it if you were going to lose the hardness anyway when casting into it?
@yoelcarrera6586
@yoelcarrera6586 3 года назад
I don't think he would loose hardness, he's not heating it up .. it's taking some heat from the brass but the sand is keeping it cool enough I think... for sure the edge of it would be fine.
@SnorrioK
@SnorrioK 2 года назад
@@yoelcarrera6586 - That brass is at 1000°C or 1700°F. You only need half that for a few seconds to lose the hardness in a metal piece. The cast goes into the sand form and stays there until it cools slowly, that's what the sand is for, to keep it from rapidly cooling. After reading all this, do you find it likely that I may be telling the truth? You can take mild steel, sharpen it and shave paper and do a few cuts into wood and not see a difference. It's only when you do it a lot when you start seeing it go to shit. I've tested it and mild steel works really well, just for a short time. I've also, at work, tried sharpening drill bits without cooling them because I was in a hurry. They lost their hardness and dulled immediately, resulting in me getting water to keep them cool anyway. So yeah. A few hundred degrees in just a matter of seconds and hardened metal loses its hardness.
