I used dowel pin joinery for the first time as the primary joinery method on a project. I learned some hard lessons and share 3 rules that can help you be successful and avoid making the same mistakes as me.

I believe he was referencing the show Breaking Bad. You look sort of like Hank Schrader, who was a character in the show, brother in law to the main character Walter White.

The centring pins are really useful. Whatever hole size you are using you can set three hole positions accurately in one go. I see many videos and people just don't seem to want to use them.

I had bought a couple of other types of dowel jigs and even with practice, I could never get a perfectly aligned joint. Then I bought the Milescraft jig and that did the trick. That jig makes it so much easier to get accurate results. Another doweling tool that I found to be valuable are the centering pins. With those, you could just use a drill and still get good results. Great video. To the point with helpful information.

great tips. i recently got the rockler beadlock joiner as a cheaper alternative to dominos (ahhhh, someday), but i believe there will always be a place in joinery for dowels.

Hi, at 4:22 minutes you show how to joint rail and style using dowels, can that jig make the holes in end grain narrow piece of wood?
@budsworkshop
@budsworkshop Год назад
Yes - If you go back to 3:00 minutes I am drilling the end grain for that joint. You have to use the fence and a clamp which is not ideal, but it works out pretty good.

Hi Bud. I want to make a wooden frame using 1" hardwood dowels. Can you please help me with advice how to join round dowels at a 90 degree angle to obtain a decent amount of strength and make it look reasonable. I do plan to cover it all with a layer of fiberglass cloth and resin after the frame is built. Thank You.
@budsworkshop
@budsworkshop 9 месяцев назад
Depends on the size of the dowel. I would probably take the same approach as making a picture frame and cut at 45 degree angle and the cut in a spline for strength.

I began using this jig and recently splurged on the full set of dowlmax and the festool domino 700, something I swore at the beginning I won't spend that kind of money.
@budsworkshop
@budsworkshop Год назад
Both very nice tools. The Festool 700 is the Cadillac. Maybe someday I'll have the $$ for one. Need to upgrade my table saw first :-). The great thing about woodworking is there are solutions for every budget.
@foodparadise5792
@foodparadise5792 Год назад
@@budsworkshop Same here, and having the freedom of staying away from Ikea furniture. 😆😆I need a decent table saw too, after comparing all, I am eyeing on the Maksiwa 1600, probably the most budget friendly sliding table saw and I don't have to make all other jigs like cross cut jig comparing to American style table saw. And it has a 12 inch blade instead of 10. I have to wait until I have bigger shop though. btw I didn't pay full for the festool 700. I bought it used for half the price and it's still good after few years.

Dowelmax is worth every penny. I've not felt the need for a domino since I've been using my dowelmax. Not that I don't still want one, but the dowelmax works so well that the domino can be a "later on" purchase, if production ever dictates the need.

I am going to dowel the Nor Cal Black Walnut from my yard, I just milled. A Fireplace mantle. The wood is 3" Thick, 6ft long. Two pieces, approx 8" wide each, forming an L for a fireplace mantle. The "L" is going down from the flat mantle. So I need 1" Dowels? Or can I use say, 3- 3/8 dowel at an angle or in line for the thickness? And then dowel every foot or so?
@budsworkshop
@budsworkshop 9 месяцев назад
You can certainly use multiple dowels to account for the thickness. Three at an angle or even four in a square would suffice.
@budsworkshop
@budsworkshop 9 месяцев назад
Every foot is a good spacing, as well.

The problem I have had with cheap jigs is they're not accurate at all. Then I have dowels that aren't straight and/or in the exact spot I need them and then my joints don't line up right. I've bought 3 different jigs so far . I guess it's true, you get what you pay for. Just gotta pull the trigger on one that's a little more pricey
@budsworkshop
