This is a very simple and inexpensive jig for adding dowel joints to your project. You can easily use this for 3 different configurations to set up different types of doweling joints. I have used this tool for all my doweling applications and it works great.

Top to top…that’s such a CRUCIAL piece of information to have when edge jointing with this. Thanks for illustrating that. The directions that come with the kit are super clunky to go through. Thanks man!!

Good tutorial. Thanks. I have one and use it frequently instead of dominoes. Gives a tighter joint and you can use multiple dowels in a short span/area. Great alternative to mortise and tenons.

Nice video! I got one of these a few months ago for a project and my first use for it was actually edge joining two nearly full size sheets of 3/4" plywood. Other than the plywood being really heavy this worked fantastic. I used pocket holes to keep them together but there's no way I could have kept the pieces aligned using pocket holes alone. One gripe I had with the kit is the drill bits are trash. Mine aren't sharp at all and judging by how yours sounded they weren't that sharp either. Easy enough to fix that though. Good luck with the channel!
@SDWI-Woodworking
@SDWI-Woodworking Год назад
Glad that you enjoyed the video. I fully agree with the "drill bits" comment. They worked great with the first few uses, but now they take a bit more muscle. You are right though, pretty easy fix. Just have to make sure that when you replace them to get bits with the start point on them so the bits don't trail on you.

Just bought one of these and never did anything with dowels, very clear explanation. I am joining chair arms at 45 degree angles, is it the same process?
@SDWI-Woodworking
@SDWI-Woodworking Год назад
I would look for one designed to do a 45 degree angle. This may not be your tool of choice for that.

Brilliant video and demonstration. Is it possible to join 2 mitre pieces with this jig?
@SDWI-Woodworking
@SDWI-Woodworking 5 месяцев назад
Glad you enjoyed it. As for Mitred pieces, no, it doesn't do that. There are some that you can buy that will allow it. I would be more apt to do a spline on a mitred piece. I have a spline jig video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QnRYDEge8jA.html

@SDWI-Woodworking
@SDWI-Woodworking 4 месяца назад
@egoire7954 Oh, absolutely. That is exactly what it is made for. Use the 3/8" dowels for 2" material. I should also note that you would want to strengthen it with some pocket screws. Check out my "How I make a Tabletop" video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vSvVzP7_cyA.html.

Good video, but why does everybody only use the center one in these tutorials? Can you use the left and right one? Also when you twist it to find center. When I turn it, the holes are either right or left of center. Is there a trick to this?
@SDWI-Woodworking
@SDWI-Woodworking 11 месяцев назад
There is. Instead of trying to explain it I will give you a link to the manual. Scroll down to page 5 and in the lower right hand corner is a diagram that will tell you how to position the jig for 1/4" and 5/16" holes. www.milescraft.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/1309-1359-DowelJigKit-Manual.pdf

It needs a spot to be clamped down. You get too much movement just holding it with your hand.
@SDWI-Woodworking
@SDWI-Woodworking 11 месяцев назад
Haven't had much of a problem with that. Make sure that you put the bit all the way in so that that the "point" is in the wood before starting your drill.
@burtreynolds3143

he needs a more powerful drill or a sharper drill bit I thought the pieces would be harder to mate based on the wobble

It is a neat concept, but I do suggest you be careful with it. I had one of the black post snap off of mine in the first few uses. It will still work in several ways, just not as durable as it should be.

@@SDWI-Woodworking Excitement isn't the goal - education is. 1. Start with better lighting. It will improve video quality and shop safety. If you can afford that table saw you can afford half a dozen LED shop lights. 2. Don't talk off the top of your head - write a script and follow it. 3. Be professional in appearance and deportment. 4. Cut out the padding - this 12 minute video could have been done in half the time and been better for being concise (see comment about script). 5. Clean up the shop. Seriously, look at some of the competition and see how many with high subscription numbers shoot in shops that look like a hurricane just ran through. 6. Ditch the pinup girls. 7. Find a better product to advertise - I have one of these kits and it isn't worth the time to learn to use it nor the money spent to buy it. There are much better and less expensive ways to align dowel holes. 8. Keep in mind that dowels (or dominos or biscuits or any other type of "shortcut" jointing techniques/products are only for good alignment, not strength. 9. Learn how to make a mortis/tenon and other traditional joints that don't use a third chunk to put the joint together. 10. Just my opinion but dowels should be used only as pins to snug a mortis/tenon or other traditional joint and only very rarely for alignment or any other purpose in woodworking. 11. Finally, DON'T BE DISCOURAGED by a grumpy, whiny, old man that points out the weak spots. Every point in the list is positive and specific feedback. Adjusting your methods and techniques is no guarantee of success, but if you shoot for most of my suggestions the quality of your videos will improve. Consider a before/after video of shop cleanup.
